Over the last decades, Cystoseira s.l. sufered from a severe loss as a result of multiple anthropogenic stressors. In particular, Gongolaria barbata has faced multiple human‑induced threats, and, despite its ecological importance in structuring rocky communities and hosting a large number of species, the natural recovery of G. barbata depleted populations is uncertain. Here, we used nine microsatellite loci specifcally developed for G. barbata to assess the genetic diversity of this species and its genetic connectivity among ffteen sites located in the Ionian, the Adriatic and the Black Seas. In line with strong and signifcant heterozygosity defciencies across loci, likely explained by Wahlund efect, high genetic structure was observed among the three seas (ENA corrected FST = 0.355, IC = [0.283, 0.440]), with an estimated dispersal distance per generation smaller than 600 m, both in the Adriatic and Black Sea. This strong genetic structure likely results from restricted gene fow driven by geographic distances and limited dispersal abilities, along with genetic drift within isolated populations. The presence of genetically disconnected populations at small spatial scales (< 10 km) has important implications for the identifcation of relevant conservation and management measures for G. -

Carmel and Western Galilee, respective- ly, both in Israel) contain both Ahmarian and Aurignacian cultural remains, the former being a locally developed culture, and the latter an intrusion from Europe. The molluscan assemblages from the two sites contain both local and foreign elements. The local elements are mostly beads made of Columbella rustica and Tritia gibbosula shells. A comparison of Upper Paleolithic shell bead assemblages of Levantine sites to Aurignacian assemblages in Europe suggests that while most of the shells are Mediterranean species, it is nonetheless possible to distinguish between the local Ahmarian traditions in personal ornaments, and those which were brought or influenced by the Aurigna- cian traditions. Specifically, a few shell beads such as Tritia mutabilis and Ocinebrina edwardsii, might have been imported from sites in Western Europe, and likewise the scaphopods seem to be present as a result of Aurignacian influences (either brought from Europe or collected along the Levant coast). Furthermore, in a few cases shells were originally collected in distant locations. One Euplica festiva, from the Red Sea Shore found at Kebara Cave may have been collected by Ahmarians and exchanged with Aurignacians. -

Role of personal ornaments: Vlakno cave (Croatia) Barbara Cvitkušić and Dario Vujević In an attempt to understand the culture and social behaviour of Mesolithic populations, personal ornaments are of particular importance. Personal ornaments in their formal expressions (marine gastropods and bivalves, freshwater gastropods, modified animal bones, and teeth) not only point to the universal idea of decoration and aesthetic sensibility, but also reveal mutual contacts and communication pathways. Vlakno cave on the island of Dugi Otok (Croatia) is one of the most prominent Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene sites discovered in Dalmatia recently. Research here has been conducted since 2004 with some interruptions, and a depth of 5 m was achieved in 2013, reaching the layers belonging to the Early Epigravettian. In the large assemblage of ornamental finds that come from different strata, it is possible to recognize changes over time regarding the type and frequency of finds. Perforated animal teeth, mostly deer canines, are gradually replaced by marine gastropods and bivalves. So far, almost 400 specimens of body ornaments have been found, along with numerous unperforated marine gastropods, making Vlakno cave one of the richest archaeological sites in personal ornaments on the eastern Adriatic coast. Beads have a privileged place in shedding light on the origins of modern cogni- tion in human societies. While archaeological approaches to ancient symbolism have often been concerned with behavioral modernity of our species, anthropological studies have underlined the role of ornaments in the con- struction of personhood, identity, and social networks in traditional societies. Exploring an approach informed by anthropological and ethnographic theory, we discuss Paleolithic and Meso- lithic bodily adornments found across southeastern Europe. We present a review of the evidence for long-term regional and diachronic differences and similarities in types of body adornment among prehistoric foragers of the region. Here we look at aspects of cultural transmission and transferability over time. This enables us to recon- struct a series of gestures involved in ornament manufacture and use, and to examine transmissions of technologi- cal know-hows, shifting aesthetic values, and demands for specific local and non-local materials, including marine shells transferred across this region over long distances (>400km). -
