Print. 179 Pp. ──────────────────────────────── CARLOS AGUIRRE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON Mario Vargas Llosa, one of Latin America’s most important writers and intellectuals and the recipient of, among numerous other awards, the 2010 Nobel Prize in literature, is not only the author of an admirable corpus of novels, theater plays, and essays on literary criticism, but also somebody that has been at the center on countless political and literary controversies ever since he came into the literary and political spotlight in 1962 when he won the Biblioteca Breve award for his novel Time of the Hero at the age of twenty-six: the novel was received with great hostility in his home country, Peru, where prominent members of the military accused him of being a Communist and a traitor; in 1967, when he won the Rómulo Gallegos prize for his novel The Green House, he engaged in a dispute (at that time private) with Cuban officials such as Haydeé Santamaría who allegedly wanted him to make a fake donation of the cash prize to Che Guevara’s guerrilla movements; in 1971, he publicly and loudly denounced the Cuban government after the imprisonment and public recounting of Heberto Padilla and other writers accused of counter-revolutionary activities; in 1974, he criticized the confiscation of media in Peru by a military regime that he had hitherto supported and became the subject of a fierce polemic in his country; in 1976, he was -

Sometimes they are just part of the environment, but at times they are just an important role in his work’s development, for example, in Conversation in the Cathedral (1969), Captain Pantoja and the Special Service (1973), Aunt Julia and the Scripwriter (1977) and The War of the End of the World (1981), the perception of these novels does not necessarily converge with what Vargas Llosa thinks about them, since the novel transfigure the events and includes points of view which are not those of the author, who is interested on the verisimilitude of the his stories. These pages explore the journalists as char- acters, as well as journalism in press and on radio, in some of the Peruvian Nobel Prize’s novels. Keywords Journalists; journalism; literature. Nobel Prize in Literature 2010 goes to Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa Mario Vargas Llosa, the Peruvian novelist, poet, essayist and journalist, was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy announced recently. The academy honored him “for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual’s resistance, revolt and defeat.” He is the first Latin American writer to win the prize since the Mexican poet/philosopher Octavio Paz won it in 1990. The Nobel tends to be given as a lifetime achievement award – it goes to a living writer, not to a particular work – and Vargas Llosa, 74, earned it with decades of critically acclaimed writing across literary genres. Born in the small southern Peruvian city of Arequipa in 1936, he was brought up in Bolivia by his maternal grandparents after his parents divorced. He returned to Lima for military school, then studied law, and afterward he lived abroad for nearly two decades, spending time in Spain, France and England. It was during that time that he began writing novels. His 1963 novel, The Time of the Hero, which drew on his military school experiences and exposed the corruption he encountered there, catapulted him onto the literary scene. Among his other well-known novels are The Green House, Conversation in the Cathedral, and the epic saga The War at the End of the World, a fable of Latin American revolution set in the Brazilian town of Canudos, which the inflluential American literary critic Harold Blom cites in his list of essential works of the Western canon. -

Authoritarianism, Rebellion, and the Father Figure in the Fictions of Vargas Llosa Carlos Granés It is not easy to know where novelists get their topics. Nor is it easy to understand why certain problems and experiences stimulate creation, while other similar events leave no imprint in an author’s works. Some writers dismiss these questions and rarely address their creative process. It would seem that discovering the sources of their topics or obsessions, or the reason why they, like many others, have dedicated their lives to the creation of characters made up of words and set in worlds of their imagination, does not hold any interest for them. This is not the case of Mario Vargas Llosa. On many occasions, the Peruvian novelist has addressed the issue of what events are incorporated into the process of writing. He has even described it as a “reverse striptease,” in which authors, instead of revealing their hidden beauties, exhibit “the demons that plague and obsess them; the ugliest part of themselves, their nostalgia, guilt, and rancor” (Historia secreta de una novela 11).1 Vargas Llosa has also revealed the personal experiences that have become the raw material of his fictions. These experiences share something in common. They contradicted views he had previously held about reality. For instance, the years he spent at the Leoncio Prado Military School, an institution that had students from all of Peru’s geographical regions and social classes, permitted the young Vargas Llosa to get to know the deep social and racial tensions that conditioned life in his country. -
