Print. 179 Pp. ──────────────────────────────── CARLOS AGUIRRE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON Mario Vargas Llosa, one of Latin America’s most important writers and intellectuals and the recipient of, among numerous other awards, the 2010 Nobel Prize in literature, is not only the author of an admirable corpus of novels, theater plays, and essays on literary criticism, but also somebody that has been at the center on countless political and literary controversies ever since he came into the literary and political spotlight in 1962 when he won the Biblioteca Breve award for his novel Time of the Hero at the age of twenty-six: the novel was received with great hostility in his home country, Peru, where prominent members of the military accused him of being a Communist and a traitor; in 1967, when he won the Rómulo Gallegos prize for his novel The Green House, he engaged in a dispute (at that time private) with Cuban officials such as Haydeé Santamaría who allegedly wanted him to make a fake donation of the cash prize to Che Guevara’s guerrilla movements; in 1971, he publicly and loudly denounced the Cuban government after the imprisonment and public recounting of Heberto Padilla and other writers accused of counter-revolutionary activities; in 1974, he criticized the confiscation of media in Peru by a military regime that he had hitherto supported and became the subject of a fierce polemic in his country; in 1976, he was -

Tricontinental Modernities: Vargas Llosa's Late Turn against Imperialism in El sueño del celta __________________________________ NICHOLAS BIRNS EUGENE LANG COLLEGE, THE NEW SCHOOL 1. Revising the Celtic In its mixture of the personal and the political, its concentration on an individual making difficult moral choices, and its wide historical lens, Mario Vargas Llosa's El sueño del celta (2010), published only weeks after he garnered that year’s Nobel Prize for Literature, is reminiscent of many of his earlier novels. I wish to contend that, even more, it is an effective sequel to his 1981 novel La guerra del fin del mundo, not only treating many of the same themes but also providing a contrast between Vargas Llosa in the wake of his disillusionment with left-wing radicalism and the Peruvian writer after more or less thirty years being on the center-right. Whereas the Brazil-set novel seemed aimed at the errors of leftist utopianism, the more recent work indicts imperialism in Africa, Latin America, and Europe. This essay will show how this “tricontinental” agenda is complemented by a “modernity” that, for Vargas Llosa, is both ideological and stylistic. The Celt of El sueño del celta is Roger Casement, the British government official, imperial muckraker, and, ultimately, committed Irish nationalist revolutionary. But Casement is not the first Celt (a category that includes, among others, both the Scots and the Irish) in Vargas Llosa’s oeuvre. Galileo Gall, the chronologically inclined anarchist in La guerra del fin del mundo was a Scotsman as well. Furthermore, Gall was originally intended to be, like Casement, an Irishman, only, as Efraín Kristal points out, becoming a Scotsman in the “final version” (125). -

DOI: https://doi.org/10.25222/larr.300 OTHER ARTS AND HUMANITIES Blackface at the Andean Fiesta: Performing Blackness in the Danza de Caporales Danielle Roper University of Chicago, US [email protected] This study assesses the deployment of blackface in a performance of the Danza de Caporales at La Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria in Puno, Peru, by the performance troupe Sambos Illimani con Sentimiento y Devoción. Since blackface is so widely associated with the nineteenth- century US blackface minstrel tradition, this article develops the concept of “hemispheric blackface” to expand common understandings of the form. It historicizes Sambos’ deployment of blackface within an Andean performance tradition known as the Tundique, and then traces the way multiple hemispheric performance traditions can converge in a single blackface act. It underscores the amorphous nature of blackface itself and critically assesses its role in producing anti-blackness in the performance. Paper tracking number: 1088142 Abstract: As a mid-sized economy with a sparse tradition of film and television production, Peru offers an interesting case to study media convergence, from an industrial as well as a digital perspective. Tracking the developments requires establishing a model for convergence that is appropriate for the specifics of a country like Peru, together with data collection considering a diverse and dispersed set of production houses working mostly for local distribution and consumption. Convergence redefined Why convergence? A term which is prevalent in many discussions, at policy meetings and business proposals, but with relatively little academic currency; but one that has been useful to explain a process that beginning in the early to mid- nineties, has changed radically the nature of media, started by the emerging of the Internet as the favored mechanism for innovations in media. Convergence is simultaneously a by word for the innovation and disruption that has been occurring in the past twenty years, as well as a confortable descriptor of something still going on and not yet finished, that is affecting all of us, everywhere. -
