Clarenceville Cemetery Clarenceville Cemetery Edited by Margaret Najarian, Western Wayne County Genealogical Society Clarenceville Cemetery is located on the south side of Eight Mile Road (Base Line), east of Middle Belt Road (W ½ NW ¼ SEC 1, T1S, R9E). It is 10 rods square. A burial ground was bought by Gilbert Martin, August 1840, before his death and then on April 15, 1841 William G. Plain bought the burial ground from Gilbert Martin’s widow for $30.00. A meeting of the citizens of Fractional School District No. 9 in Farmington, Livonia & Redford, was held on the 15th day of April 1841 for the purpose of accepting the burial ground offered by William G. Plain. It was voted that Benjamin Stevens, Lewis Nash and James Gunning be the Trustees of the burial grounds and Gardurous Webster be the collector of the land society, and William G. Plain be the treasurer of the society. On March 16, 1892, Frederick and Maria Nacker sold to the German Evangelical Lutheran Emmanuel Congregation of Clarenceville the northwest corner of the cemetery for the sum of $1.00. The Trustees of the church were William Heise, Frederick Harm, and Louis Waack. The Clarenceville Cemetery Association appointed Russell Waack secretary/treasurer in 1953 who collected a small fee from the lot owners to maintain the cemetery. In 1987, the City of Livonia took over the maintenance of the cemetery. In September 1989, the City erected a new fence around the cemetery. Gilbert Marin died December 5, 1840 and is buried here. Grace L. Chapman Waack was born August 7, 1921 and died August 3, 2010 and is the latest burial here. Tombstone inscriptions were copied by the D.A.R. about 1930. This reading of the tombstones was done in June 1989 by the following members of the Western Wayne County Genealogical Society: Carol Lee Gibbons, Freda Hill, Shirley Phillips, Helen & Jim Smith, Betty Sutton, and Margaret Najarian. We hope this corrected and updated reading will be beneficial to all who use it.     Sunday of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women The myrrh-bearers had brought funeral spices and ointments to finish committing Christ’s body to the grave. They were the first to see the empty tomb and were instructed by the risen Lord to bring the joyful news to the apostles. Sts. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus are also commemorated on this day. There are eight women who are generally identified as the myrrh-bearers. Each of the four Gospels gives a different aspect of the roles of these eight women at the cross and at the tomb on Easter morning, perhaps since the eight women arrived in different groups and at different times. The eight were: Mary Magdalene Mary, the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary) Joanna Salome Mary the wife of Cleopas (mother of James) Susanna Mary of Bethany (sister of Lazarus) Martha of Bethany (sister of Lazarus) These eight women had been together throughout Jesus’ public ministry. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and others (Luke 8:3) are described as providing for Jesus out of their possessions. These same women also faithfully followed him from Galilee and came up with him to Jerusalem. Troparion (Tone 2) – The Noble Joseph, When he had taken down Your most pure Body from the tree, Wrapped it in fine linen and anointed it with spices, And placed it in a new tomb. But You did rise on the third day, O Lord, Granting the world great mercy. Troparion (Tone 2) – The angel came to the myrrhbearing women at the tomb and said: Myrrh is meet for the dead; But Christ has shown Himself a stranger to corruption! Folks who would like more information on the descendants of sons James or John should select them from the previous page. 1. John Alford #4656 b. about 1645, probably Virginia, m. Wife is Unknown #4657. John died Mar 14 1710, New Kent Co., VA. The late Tressie Bowman, publisher of the ALFORD FAMILY BULLETIN in a family group record provided to AAFA used the St. Peter's Parish Register and Boddie to compile a family as is shown in this record. Although the church record does prove a John Alford had the children listed there is nothing to prove it was the John who died in 1710. Please note that there is no proof that James was the son of John. There are some who make a William Alford the father of James. It is true that there was a William Alford in the area at the same time who had about equal circumstances as James. We lean to John but you can take your pick. There are important notes at the records of most of the children. Please don't draw any conclusions about them without first reviewing those records. Alethos Anesti... ********************** The myrrh-bearers had brought funeral spices and ointments to finish committing Christ’s body to the grave. They were the first to see the empty tomb and were instructed by the risen Lord to bring the joyful news to the apostles. Sts. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus are also commemorated on this day. There are eight women who are generally identified as the myrrh-bearers. Each of the four Gospels gives a different aspect of the roles of these eight women at the cross and at the tomb on Easter morning, perhaps since the eight women arrived in different groups and at different times. The eight were:Mary Magdalene , Mary, the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary), Joanna, Salome Mary the wife of Cleopas (mother of James) , Susanna Mary of Bethany (sister of Lazarus), Martha of Bethany (sister of Lazarus) These eight women had been together throughout Jesus’ public ministry. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and others (Luke 8:3) are described as providing for Jesus out of their possessions.

    Luke’s Paradise in its Judicial Setting (Lk 23:43) By Steven Simon Tucker BA (Melb) BSc (Melb) BTheol (Hons) (MCD) A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Theology Melbourne College of Divinity 2011 2 Abstract My study begins with ―paradise‖ as found in the Lukan Jesus‘ promise to the second criminal crucified with him (Lk 23:43). I look at the different associations ―paradise‖ carried in the Septuagint and in Second Temple Judaism, from a royal park to the garden of Eden. Next I concentrate on the immediate context of Luke‘s ―paradise,‖ and suggest that an informal trial and judgment is taking place in the dialogue between the two criminals and Jesus.     (005/11) Santa Susanna Santa Susanna is an 15th century monastic and titular church. It is on the Piazza San Bernardo, on the Via XX Settembre just north-west of the Piazza della Repubblica and its metro station in the rione Trevi. The dedication is to St Susanna, and the full official title is Santa Susanna alle Terme di Diocleziano. (1) History A church at Santa Susanna commemorates the place where, according to St. Jerome, a young Christian woman was martyred for refusing to worship Rome's pagan gods. Around the year 290 Susanna was residing with her father, Christian presbyter Gabinus, right next door to her saintly uncle Pope Caius (283-296), and in the shadows of the Emperor Diocletian's (284-305) immense baths. After refusing to break a vow of virginity to marry her insistent suitor Maximianus Galerius (none other than the Emperor's adopted son and heir), Susanna also balked at offering a pagan sacrifice, and was beheaded in her own home. The church of Santa Susanna is one of the oldest titles of Rome. The first Christian place of worship was built here in the 4th century. It was probably the titulus of Pope Caius (283-296). The early Christian church was built on the remains of three Roman villas, and was located immediately outside the fence of the Baths of Diocletian and close to the Servian walls. (8) First church By tradition, the church was built in 330, and named San Caio after the owner of the first chapel. In 590, the church was rededicated to St Susan because of her growing popularity.
