  • College of Education Commencement 2021
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION COMMENCEMENT 2021 PB Welcome to CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY LONG BEACH California State University, Long Beach is a member of the 23-campus California State University (CSU) system. The initial college, known then as Los Angeles-Orange County State College, was established on January 29, 1949, and has since grown to become one of the state’s largest universities. The first classes in 1949 were held in a converted apartment building on Anaheim Street and the cost to enroll was just $12.50. The 169 transfer students selected from the 25 courses offered in Teacher Education, Business Education, and Liberal Arts which were taught by 13 faculty members. Enrollment increased in 1953 when freshman and sophomore students were admitted. Expansion, in acreage, degrees, courses and enrollment continued in the 1960s, when the educational mission was modified to provide instruction for undergraduate and graduate students through the addition of master’s degrees. In 1972, the California Legislature changed the name to California State University, Long Beach. Today, more than 37,000 students are enrolled at Cal State Long Beach, and the campus annually receives high rankings in several national surveys. What students find when they come here is an academic excellence achieved through a distinguished faculty, hard-working staff and an effective and visionary administration. The faculty’s primary responsibility is to create, through effective teaching, research and creative activities, a learning environment where students grow and develop to their fullest potential. This year, because of the pandemic, we will celebrate the outstanding graduates of two classes – 2020 and 2021.

  • Sunday of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women
Sunday of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women The myrrh-bearers had brought funeral spices and ointments to finish committing Christ’s body to the grave. They were the first to see the empty tomb and were instructed by the risen Lord to bring the joyful news to the apostles. Sts. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus are also commemorated on this day. There are eight women who are generally identified as the myrrh-bearers. Each of the four Gospels gives a different aspect of the roles of these eight women at the cross and at the tomb on Easter morning, perhaps since the eight women arrived in different groups and at different times. The eight were: Mary Magdalene Mary, the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary) Joanna Salome Mary the wife of Cleopas (mother of James) Susanna Mary of Bethany (sister of Lazarus) Martha of Bethany (sister of Lazarus) These eight women had been together throughout Jesus’ public ministry. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and others (Luke 8:3) are described as providing for Jesus out of their possessions. These same women also faithfully followed him from Galilee and came up with him to Jerusalem. Troparion (Tone 2) – The Noble Joseph, When he had taken down Your most pure Body from the tree, Wrapped it in fine linen and anointed it with spices, And placed it in a new tomb. But You did rise on the third day, O Lord, Granting the world great mercy. Troparion (Tone 2) – The angel came to the myrrhbearing women at the tomb and said: Myrrh is meet for the dead; But Christ has shown Himself a stranger to corruption! So proclaim: the Lord is risen, Granting the world great mercy! Kontakion (Tone 2) – You did command the myrrh-bearers to rejoice, O Christ! By Your Resurrection, You did stop the lamentation of Eve, O God! You did command Your apostles to preach: The Savior is Risen! Descendants of John Alford b. about 1645 Three Generations This file provides all of what is currently known of the first three generations of John Alford. Folks who would like more information on the descendants of sons James or John should select them from the previous page. 1. John Alford #4656 b. about 1645, probably Virginia, m. Wife is Unknown #4657. John died Mar 14 1710, New Kent Co., VA. The late Tressie Bowman, publisher of the ALFORD FAMILY BULLETIN in a family group record provided to AAFA used the St. Peter's Parish Register and Boddie to compile a family as is shown in this record. Although the church record does prove a John Alford had the children listed there is nothing to prove it was the John who died in 1710. Please note that there is no proof that James was the son of John. There are some who make a William Alford the father of James. It is true that there was a William Alford in the area at the same time who had about equal circumstances as James. We lean to John but you can take your pick. There are important notes at the records of most of the children. Please don't draw any conclusions about them without first reviewing those records. John's date of birth is nothing more than a guess- as is his place of birth. See also Boddie, John HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES, Vol XII, page 57-58. His death was reported in The Parish Register of Saint Peter's New Kent County, Virginia 1680-1787 published by The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the state of Virginia, 1904, Richmond.

Engineering a Successful Mission: Lessons from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Presentation at the Supply Chain 2011 Conference October 19, 2011 David Everett, NASA GSFC Abstract • Engineering a Successful Mission: Lessons from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter • Abstract—Schedule pressure is common in the commercial world, where late delivery of a product means delayed income and loss of profit. Research spacecraft developed by NASA, on the other hand, tend to be driven by the high cost of launch vehicles and the public scrutiny of failure--the primary driver is ensuring proper operation in space for a system that cannot be retrieved for repair. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) development faced both schedule pressure and high visibility. The team had to balance the strong push to meet a launch date against the need to ensure that this first mission for Exploration succeeded. This presentation will provide an overview of the mission from concept through its first year of operation and explore some of the challenges the systems engineering team faced taking a mission from preliminary design review to pre-ship review in 3 years. 2 10/19/11, Supply Chain 2011, LRO, D.
