It should be noted that Memorial Day is more than an opportunity to enjoy a three-day weekend. Rather, it affords us the occasion to consider and commemorate the sacrifice of more than 1.3 million men and women who gave their lives in service to this nation. Thus said, I do hope that you will avail yourselves of the opportunity to participate in local town proceedings. In fact, at the conclusion of this message I will invite Ron Phelps to touch upon this and more. Ultimately… KEY 2 – Memorial Day should matter to us as Americans. Perhaps it should matter even more so as Christians. Why? Because the themes of selflessness and sacrifice are at the heart of Christian faith and practice. Such elements are foundational to our belief system, being addressed by virtually every book of the Bible! Perhaps no book of the Bible touches upon these themes as powerfully as the Book of Philippians (NT). This morning, I have chosen to explore this epistle (i.e., the letter of Paul to the ancient church at Philippi). Let’ us delve in… PHILIPPIANS 2 PT. 1 In many ways, the “center of gravity” for this inspired work is found in its second chapter. In Philippians 2:5– 11, the apostle Paul details the story of Jesus incarnation, life, ministry, death, resurrection and exaltation in a highly poetic manner.     Open Theology 2020; 6: 646–660 Women and Gender in the Bible and the Biblical World Andrea Hartmann* Junia – A Woman Lost in Translation: The Name IOYNIAN in Romans 16:7 and its History of Interpretation https://doi.org/10.1515/opth-2020-0138 received June 30, 2020; accepted October 27, 2020 Abstract: The name of the second person greeted in Romans 16:7 is given as IOYNIAN, a form whose gramma- tical gender could be either feminine or masculine which leads to the question: Is it Junia or Junias – awomanor aman– who is greeted alongside Andronicus as “outstanding among the apostles?” This article highlights early influential answers to this question in the history of interpretation (John Chrysostom’scommentary,thedisciple- ship list of Pseudo-Epiphanius, Luther’s translation, and Calvin’s interpretation) showing that societal percep- tions of women’s roles were a factor in how they interpreted IOYNIAN. The article then summarises the last 150 years of interpretation history which saw (a) the disappearance of Junia from the text and from scholarly discussion due to the impact of the short-from hypothesis in the nineteenth century, (b) the challenge to this male interpretation in connection with second wave feminism, and (c) the restoration of the female reading in the ensuing debate. Bringing together the main lines of the argument, it will be shown that there is only one reading supported by the evidence, the female reading which throughout the centuries was the more difficult reading in light of the church’sandsociety’s perception of women’s

LEWIS In the Gospels, we see women showing hospitality to Jesus, women supplying him with their means, and women travel- ing with him and being around the cross. We see Jesus healing women, dealing with their spiritual problems, and using women as illustrations in his teaching; but we do not find any instruc- tion about their role in assemblies. The same is true of the book of Acts. Women learn; they obey the gospel; they engage in good works; they show hospitality; and they participate in giving. They are not depicted as being evangelists; they do not exercise miracle-working power; they do not baptize people; they are not elders in the congregations; and they are not pastors. No passage in the Acts of the Apostles specifically deals with the role of women in assemblies. We will turn to the epistles of Paul. Much of what Paul wrote is gender inclusive, relevant to and binding equally on men and women. Paul uses women as illustrations in his teaching. He con- trasts Hagar and Sarah (Gal 4:24ff.) and declares that the Jerusa- lem above is our mother (Gal 4:26). He speaks fondly of women as his fellow workers. The writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews includes women: Sarah, Moses’s mother, Rahab the harlot, and those who received their dead by resurrection (Heb 11:35). The Epistle of James mentions Rahab (Jas 2:25). Peter praises Sarah (1 Pet 3:6) as a model for Christian women.

O God, this is the cry of our hearts. We want to see a great harvest. God, we pray for a great harvest in schools all across this community. We pray for countless students today, who do not know you. God, we pray for an awakening of your Spirit to so grip teenagers and student in this community that they begin to run to Christ. God, we pray for a harvest in businesses, marketplaces all across this city. God, we pray for a great harvest, great need to be uncovered in men, women’s lives all across the workforce in Birmingham, that they would see the need for Christ and that your Spirit would awaken them to your salvation, your glory, your majesty. We pray for a great harvest in inner city Birmingham. We pray for a harvest in our neighborhoods. God, we are surrounded by people who do not know that you are good, Lord Jesus, and you are worthy. And we pray that your Spirit would open their eye to your greatness, and they would come running to your gospel. God, we want to be a part of a great harvest. We want to be a part of something in Birmingham that is eternally good.

Scholars agree that Paul drafted it during his two-year house arrest in Rome. Acts 28:1-31 • Author and Time: Paul wrote it about 62 A.D. as he anticipated his release from prison. • Audience: The Philippian Church. Paul established the church in Philippi approximately ten years prior, during his second missionary journey recorded in Acts 16. • Purpose: His purpose was to show his appreciation and love to the Philippians for their continued support, and to encourage their growth. • Dominant Theme: Joy in the Christian life is all about perspective. True joy is not based on circumstances. The key to lasting joy is contentment found through a relationship with Jesus Christ. The words "joy" and "rejoice" are used 16 times in the Epistle. • Key personalities: Apostle Paul, Timothy, Epaphroditus, Euodia, and Syntyche. BACKGROUND: The apostle Paul did not write Philippians in response to a crisis or to correct errors as he did with Galatians and Corinthians. Instead, he wrote to express his appreciation and affection for them for their care and support of his ministry. More than any other church, the believers in Philippi offered Paul material support for his ministry (2 Corinthians 8:11; Philippians 4:15–18). Philippians 4:15-16 - "Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need." This season was especially critical because Paul was under house arrest for two years, thankfully he was still able to preach the gospel without hindrance.

    Sunday of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women The myrrh-bearers had brought funeral spices and ointments to finish committing Christ’s body to the grave. They were the first to see the empty tomb and were instructed by the risen Lord to bring the joyful news to the apostles. Sts. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus are also commemorated on this day. There are eight women who are generally identified as the myrrh-bearers. Each of the four Gospels gives a different aspect of the roles of these eight women at the cross and at the tomb on Easter morning, perhaps since the eight women arrived in different groups and at different times. The eight were: Mary Magdalene Mary, the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary) Joanna Salome Mary the wife of Cleopas (mother of James) Susanna Mary of Bethany (sister of Lazarus) Martha of Bethany (sister of Lazarus) These eight women had been together throughout Jesus’ public ministry. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and others (Luke 8:3) are described as providing for Jesus out of their possessions. These same women also faithfully followed him from Galilee and came up with him to Jerusalem.
