Rasgando Seda: Guinga+Quinteto Villa Lobos Rasgando seda means “tearing silk”, that is a popular expression in Portuguese to means that you are doing a reverence, making a respectfull compliment to someone or someone’s work of art The Villa-Lobos Quintet, certainly the most enduring Brazilian group of chamber music, is celebrating 50 years of uninterrupted existence, always marked by unparalleled level of excellence. A superlative project mark the date: the launch of a new album: "Rasgando Seda: Guinga + Quinteto Villa-Lobos," all of it dedi- cated to Guinga’s music, unanimously considered the best and most important Brazilian composer of today. "Rasgando Seda: Guinga + Quinteto Villa-Lobos," recorded for the CD Label SESC is the result of a project of Villa-Lobos Quintet dedicated to the work of Guinga, to celebrate 50 years of exis- tence of the group. For many years, the Villa-Lobos Quintet plays Guinga’s pieces, and now is devoting an entire disk to him, in recognition to the depth of his creative work and his importance in Brazilian music scene today. In 2009 interview, the oboist Luis Carlos Justi said: "I think I speak on behalf of the group when I say that we all found in Gu- inga a soul mate. Will be going back to work and write together”. Prophetic words: the opportunity came now, in celebration of the Quintet’s fiftieth anniversary. The Quintet attend all 12 tracks on "Rasgando Seda”. In eight of them, Guinga is the guitarist (and in one, a rare thing, also sings). All arrangements for wind quin- tet are unprecedented - and signed by Paulo Sergio Santos, Santos and Paulo Aragão Vittor. COURSE - The Villa-Lobos Quintet was formed in 1962, aiming to re- cord and disseminate the Brazilian chamber music. The group has never set aside his original artistic orientation, and over half a century, has been carrying their "flags". The main ones: * Do not make distinctions between popular music of quality and quality concert music * Do not be limited to performances in theaters and festivals, but to expand the playing field for other places "where the public is" * Encourage the creation of Brazilian composers for wind quintet: flute, oboe, clarinet, french horn, bassoon). Re- sults for this precise course: the Villa-Lobos Quintet has great critical and public recognition and has been repeatedly considered the best chamber group in the country - having, for example, re- ceived several times the Carlos Gomes Prize. It brings together exceptional musicians, technical and musically, musicians who develop parallel careers as soloists and in presen- tations and recordings in Brazil and abroad. They are: Rubem Schuenck (flute), Luis Carlos Justi (oboe), Paulo Sérgio Santos (clarinet), Philip Doyle (French horn) and Aloysio Fagerlande (bassoon). THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CHORDS OF THE SUBURB - Guinga (nee Althier Car- los de Souza Lemos Escobar), was born at the district of Madureira (north area of Rio de Janeiro city) in 1950. It was for five years a student of classical guitar with Jodacil Damasceno. He began composing at age 16. He worked professionally as a guitarist, ac- companying artists such as Clara Nunes, Beth Carvalho, Alaíde Costa, João Nogueira and top hat. He had many of his songs re- corded by musicians like Elis Regina, Michel Legrand, Sergio Men- des, Leila Pinheiro, Chico Buarque, Clara Nunes, Ivan Lins and many others. His compositions are partnerships with Paulo Cesar Pinheiro, Aldir Blanc, Chico Buarque, Nei Lopes, Sergio Nature, Nelson Motta, Simone, Francisco Bosco, Mauro Felipe Gama and Luis Aguiar. It has recorded a dozen CDs. Revered by critics, with in- creasing frequency has been considered "the largest and most im- portant composer of Brazil today." So tell him their peers. To cite only one, the wizard of sounds Hermeto Pascoal: "A guy like that only appears every hundred years." In 2002, Guinga biography was written by journalist Mario Marques (Guinga, Os mais belos acordes do subúrbio, Ed Gryphus). In 2003 he had launched his songbook (Music by Guinga, Ed Gryphus). The Italian filmmaker Mas- simo D'Orsi, who considers him “genio della musica brasiliana”, is producing the documentary “Guinga: pra que mentir” (Guinga: lie for what?) BORDERS PUT IN CHECK - Although Guinga is effectively a popular composer, his music has touches of scholarly compositions, as is evident in the twelve tracks on "Rasgando Seda". "(In Guinga) the scholarly and popular, both very comfortable, are the most natural way. The Villa-Lobos himself was doing just that and it is no co- incidence that names the quintet. To explain the chemistry behind this partnership, could commit a metaphor of high risk: Guinga would be a rough diamond cut by master jewelers Paulo Sergio San- tos, Antonio Carlos Carrasqueira Luis Carlos Justi, Philip Doyle and Aloysio Fagerlande. But in Guinga’s melodies everything is very delicate, there's nothing there that could be called gross - even evoking the image of the diamond, writes the ac- tor/comediant:' (and musician) Reinaldo Figueiredo in the CD book- let. (...) "Just in this border area, of blends and hibridism spontaneous, Brazilian music is very lavish, with composers, arrangers and musicians of great talent and free of any conceptual determinism that blocks production.
