Other software – see the CD-ROM Readme file Installation overview To install your Matrox product: 1 Install the Matrox card – see “Hardware installation”, page 3. 2 Connect your video input and output – see “Connection setup”, page 5. 3 Install the software – see “Software installation”, page 13. 2 Matrox Marvel G450 eTV – User Guide Hardware installation This section describes how to install your Matrox card. If your Matrox graphics card is already installed in your computer, skip to “Connection setup”, page 5. For information specific to your computer, like how to remove its cover, see your system manual. WARNING: To avoid personal injury, turn off your computer, unplug it, and then wait for it to cool before you touch any of its internal parts. Also, static electricity can severely damage electronic parts. Before touching any electronic parts, drain static electricity from your body (for example, by touching the metal frame of your computer). When handling a card, carefully hold it by its edges and avoid touching its circuitry. 1 Remove old graphics card * If a graphics card isn’t already installed in your computer, skip to step 2. a Turn off your computer and all peripherals such as your monitor or printer. b Open the computer and remove your existing graphics card (if any). (If graphics hardware is built into the motherboard of your computer, this graphics hardware should automatically disable itself after your Matrox card is installed.) 2 Locate the AGP slot in your computer (Back of a Most computers have different types of computer) AGP slot expansion slots. Your Matrox graphics card is an AGP card. Locate the AGP slot PCI slot in your computer. Your system manual should identify the location of each type ISA slot of expansion slot in your computer. * With multi-display mode, you may be able to use your existing graphics card. For Windows 98/Me/2000/XP, see Windows 98/Me/2000/XP online help under “Multiple Display Support”. Matrox Marvel G450 eTV – User Guide 3 b Remove the cover for the slot you intend to use (if it’s not already removed). Save the screw for the mounting bracket. (If another slot is uncovered, you can seal it with the cover you just removed.) WARNING: Inserting your Matrox card into the wrong type of slot could damage your card, your computer, or both. Don’t insert the plastic tab of your AGP card (see picture) into the slot. Plastic tab PCI card AGP card 3 Insert your Matrox card a Position your Matrox card over the expansion slot you’ve chosen. b Push the card in firmly and evenly until it’s fully seated in the slot. c Replace the screw to secure the bracket of your Matrox card to the computer frame. d Put your computer cover back on. Your Matrox card is now installed. Before restarting your computer, connect your external devices (see “Connection setup”, page 5). After connecting your external devices, restart your computer and install your Matrox software (see “Software installation”, page 13). 4 Matrox Marvel G450 eTV – User Guide Connection setup After the Matrox Marvel card is installed, you need to connect your external video devices (TV, video recorders, and so on), then install the Matrox video software. This section describes how to connect video devices to your computer. Marvel cable adapters Your Matrox product includes two cable adapters adapters, you can connect external devices to your Matrox product. – one for input and the other for output. To use a composite video device, you’ll need a composite video cable (with a male RCA connector at each end). To use an S-video device, you’ll need an S-video cable (with a male S-video connector at each end). For more information, see “S-video and composite video”, page 9. Composite video cable S-video cable or audio input cable To connect audio input, you’ll need a cable with 2 male RCA connectors at each end (like a composite video cable). To connect audio output, you’ll need an audio cable with 2 male RCA connectors at one end and a stereo-jack connector at the other end. Cables Audio output cable with both audio and video connectors are also available. If your external device only uses a SCART audio/video connector (see illustration), you also need a separate SCART adapter. For more information, see “SCART information”, page 10. SCART connector The cables required may have been included with the external devices you’re using. If you don’t have the required cables, they’re available at most electronics stores. Connecting The illustrations in this section show composite video connections. S-video connections may also be used (see page 9). 1 Connect computer monitor a Plug the cable for your computer monitor into the blue connector on your Matrox card. b Make sure the other end of the monitor cable is properly connected to your monitor. 6 Matrox Marvel G450 eTV – User Guide 2 Connect Marvel audio/video Video camera or input video player a Use the input cable adapter included with your Matrox product. Plug the adapter into the A/V IN connector on your Marvel card. b Connect the VIDEO IN and AUDIO IN connectors at the other end of the adapter to the corresponding video and audio cables. (Yellow is for composite video, white is for audio left, and red is for audio right.) c Connect the other ends of your video and audio cables to the VIDEO OUT and the left and right AUDIO OUT connectors on your video camera or video player*. If your video device has only one audio connector, use the left audio connector on the cable. For more information on this type of connection, see “Matrox Marvel input”, page 10. Note: The labels on your devices may not be consistent with what’s in this guide. Different manufacturers sometimes use different labels for the same type of controls and connectors. For example, the VIDEO IN connector on your TV may be labeled VIDEO 1 (or VIDEO 2). To match labels, see the documentation for your video devices. 3 Connect TV antenna or cable TV Connect your TV antenna or cable TV to the ANT/CABLE connector on your Marvel card. *A video player can be any device that generates a video signal. For example, a VCR, videodisc player, or DVD player. Matrox Marvel G450 eTV – User Guide 7 Note: If the cable from your antenna is flat Cable extension and ends with twin leads, you need a (sold separately) 300-to-75-ohm adapter to connect to the ANT/CABLE connector (see picture). You can find this type of adapter at most electronics stores. Because of limited space between the connectors on the bracket, you may need a 300-to-75-ohm cable extension (sold separately) to connect adapter a 300-to-75-ohm adapter to the ANT/CABLE connector. 4 Connect Marvel audio output a Use the output cable adapter included with your Matrox product. Plug the adapter into the A/V OUT connector on your Marvel card. b Plug the AUDIO OUT connector of the output cable adapter into the LINE IN ( ) connector on your computer. Speakers or headphones c To hear the sound output from your computer, connect your speakers or headphones to the SPKR (speaker – ) connector on your computer. 5 Connect Marvel video output Video recorder a Connect one end of your video cable to or TV the VIDEO OUT (yellow) or S-VIDEO OUT connector on the output cable adapter. b Connect your video cable to the VIDEO IN connector on your TV or your video recorder. For more information on this type of connection, see “Matrox Marvel output”, page 11. 8 Matrox Marvel G450 eTV – User Guide 6 Connect audio output to video Video recorder recorder or TV or TV If you want to hear or record the sound output of your computer on your TV or your video recorder, connect your video device to the audio hardware of your computer. a Plug the stereo-jack end of your output audio cable into the audio LINE OUT* ( ) connector on your computer. b Plug the other end of the cable into the left (L) and right (R) AUDIO IN connectors of your video device.
