    Tropical Horticulture: Lecture 32 Lecture 32 Citrus Citrus: Citrus spp., Rutaceae Citrus are subtropical, evergreen plants originating in southeast Asia and the Malay archipelago but the precise origins are obscure. There are about 1600 species in the subfamily Aurantioideae. The tribe Citreae has 13 genera, most of which are graft and cross compatible with the genus Citrus. There are some tropical species (pomelo). All Citrus combined are the most important fruit crop next to grape. 1 Tropical Horticulture: Lecture 32 The common features are a superior ovary on a raised disc, transparent (pellucid) dots on leaves, and the presence of aromatic oils in leaves and fruits. Citrus has increased in importance in the United States with the development of frozen concentrate which is much superior to canned citrus juice. Per-capita consumption in the US is extremely high. Citrus mitis (calamondin), a miniature orange, is widely grown as an ornamental house pot plant. History Citrus is first mentioned in Chinese literature in 2200 BCE. First citrus in Europe seems to have been the citron, a fruit which has religious significance in Jewish festivals. Mentioned in 310 BCE by Theophrastus. Lemons and limes and sour orange may have been mutations of the citron. The Romans grew sour orange and lemons in 50–100 CE; the first mention of sweet orange in Europe was made in 1400. Columbus brought citrus on his second voyage in 1493 and the first plantation started in Haiti. In this dissertation I argue for an environmentally minded Atlantic history, one that is conscious of the ocean as both a cultural and a physical presence. The ocean shaped an early modern Atlantic vernacular that was at its essence maritime, godly, anxious and sociable. The ocean was a conduit to empire, so anything Britons imagined about the oceans, they imagined about their empire as well. Britons could never fully master their empire because they could never master the ocean; it was source of anxiety for even the wealthiest merchants. The fear of extremity – of wreck and ruin – kept those who crossed the ocean focused on the three most valuable Atlantic commodities: a sound reputation, accurate information, and the mercy of God.

    Grapefruit: the ‘Forbidden’ Fruit by Dave Arthur and Daemmon Reeve, Treatt plc he most recent addition to the citrus family, the grapefruit was relatively unknown to both Eastern 26 and Western civilizations until its discovery in Barbados in 1750. Since then, it has spread to Ttropical and sub-tropical regions throughout the Western Hemisphere, and is renowned for its distinctive, sweet-sour flavor. Here, the authors review the similarities between the grapefruit and its larger ancestor, the pummelo, and examine grapefruit oil components and their distinct flavor profiles. What’s in a Name? The moniker ‘grapefruit’ has led a precari- ous existence — perhaps a reflection of the very fruit it describes. It is generally FEBRUARY 2004 FEBRUARY ❘ thought that in 1750, Griffith Hughes recorded the first ever description of the grapefruit — calling it the ‘forbidden fruit.’ The less exotic description, grape- fruit, surfaced in 1814 when botanist John Lunan in his work, Hortus Jamaicensis, commented that the fruit was a smaller variety of the pummelo, also known as the shaddock, and should be named after its similarity in flavor to the grape.     Asian Pears The term Asian pear describes a large group of pear varieties having crisp, juicy fruit, when mature. The fruit are good to eat when harvested or for several months after picking if held in cold storage. The crisp texture of an Asian pear remains unchanged after picking or storage, unlike the flesh of European pears such as Bartlett or Comice. There are three types of Asian pears: round or flat fruit with green to yellow skin; round or flat fruit with bronze-colored skin and a light bronze-russet; and pear shaped fruit with green or russet skin. Kiwi Kiwi are grown in China, Africa, and California. They need warm climates and protection from strong winds when in the process of growing. The outer skin is a brown color and is covered with short, stiff brown hairs. The inside is a bright green color and is somewhat white in the middle with dark purple or black seeds. The flavor is sweet, and somewhat has a taste of a strawberry. Kumquat (KUHM-kwaht ) These look like grape-sized oranges, and they can be eaten whole. The flavor is a bit sour and very intense. They peak in the winter months and are available from December through June. They grow on small evergreen trees in areas with warm climates. Kumquats’ are a great source of fiber, vitamins A and C, calcium, and iron. They are free of fat, cholesterol, and sodium. Mineola There are several different varieties of tangelos, each a cross between a tangerine and another citrus fruit. The Mineola, a tangerine-grapefruit cross, is especially popular.

Drug resistance have limited the choice of treatment of malaria. Hence, finding the new compounds to treat malaria is urgently needed. The present study aim at investigating the toxicological and anti-plasmodial effects of extracts ofOrange (Citrus sinensis) peels, Grape (Citrus paradisi) and Guava (Psidium guajava) Leaves on Albino rat infected with Plasmodium berghei. Leaves were extracted using soxhlet method and acute toxicity was evaluated. For efficacy test in vivo, standard 5-day suppressive test was carried out. Rats were inoculated with 1x107/ml parasitized erythrocytes of Plasmodium berghei by intraperitoneal injection. The extracts (100,300, 500, 800, and 1000 mg/kg) of each plants were given separately to each group and orally once a day for 5 consecutive days. Average Percentage parasitemia and biochemical indices were estimated. Combisunate (10 mg/kg) was given to infected rats as reference control while untreated control was given only distilled water. It was found that ethanolic extracts of these leaves at different doses showed dose dependent parasitemia inhibition and have no physiological effects.
