Edward Morse, a pioneer of Japanese archeology and natural history, wrote that he was much impressed upon observ- ing that almost every high mountain top has its own shrine and that some of them are piously worshiped by thousands of people who climb there in summer after many miles of arduous travel.l Mountain worship is intricately involved with Japanese history.

  • An Isotopic Study of the Groundwater Regime of a Seepage Caldera Lake District, Southern Japan
Integrated Methods in Catchment Hydrology—Tracer, Remote Sensing and New Hydrometric Techniques (Proceedings of IUGG 99 Symposium HS4, Birmingham, July 1999). IAHS Publ. no. 258, 1999. 183 An isotopic study of the groundwater regime of a seepage caldera lake district, southern Japan YOSHIHISA KAWANABE, MASAYA YASUHARA, ATSUNAO MARUI Hydrology Research Group, Geological Survey of Japan, 1-1-3 Higashi, Tsukuba, lbaraki 305-8567, Japan e-mail: [email protected] TADASHI KOHNO Research Centre of Environmental Science and Technology, Nippon Bunri University, 1727 lchiki, Ohita 870-0397, Japan YOSHINORI SATOH Division of Social Studies, Joetsu University of Education, Joetsu, Niigata 943-8512, Japan Abstract The 233-m deep Lake Ikeda is a seepage caldera lake with no surface outflow or inflow. During February-March 1998 water samples were taken from lakes, rivers, wells, hot springs, and springs. They were analysed for §D, SIS0, and CI" concentration to determine the contribution of lake water to river discharge and downgradient groundwater field. The results indicate that the influence of leakage from Lake Ikeda is confined to the area east- south of the lake, where a mixing of lake water, local rainwater, and sea water takes place. For certain rivers and springs, lake water contributes more than 80% of the discharge. Many of the wells and hot springs represent a 7-100% lake-water contribution. Leakage of lake water is most likely to occur through the southern caldera walls, where thick volcanic aquifers are hydraulically connected to Lake Ikeda. The study showed that leakage from Lake Ikeda was found to play a predominant role in the groundwater regime of the district.

  • Okinoshima Island and Related Sites in the Munakata Region”
“Okinoshima Island and Related Sites in the Munakata Region” Study Report II / 1 English Translation 2012 World Heritage Promotion Committee of “Okinoshima Island and Related Sites in the Munakata Region” Foreword “Okinoshima Island and Related Sites in the Munakata Region” are our heritage consisting of Okinoshima Island, where state-related rituals were held from the late 4th century to the end of the 9th century, Munakata Taisha, a Shinto shrine that developed from the rituals on Okinoshima Island, and a group of mounded tombs associated with the Munakata clan and maritime people who undertook the rituals. Worship of Okinoshima Island and rituals at Munakata Taisha have been protected and passed down by local people of the Munakata region from ancient times to the present. The group of mounded tombs also remains in a good state of conservation, giving testimony to the characteristics of the place and people at that time. While we can learn many things from this property, we have the responsibility to pass down the value of this precious property to future generations. It was in this recognition that the World Heritage Promotion Committee of “Okinoshima Island and Related Sites in the Munakata Region” was set up in January 2009 to pursue World Heritage List inscription as a means to protect and pass down the value of this property. In order to achieve World Heritage List inscription, it is necessary to define the Outstanding Universal Value of the property. A study project started in order to verify the value of this property and Study Report I was published in the fiscal year 2010.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. i SILT GEOCHRONOLOGY AND MINERALOGY, MOUNT DAISEN, JAPAN by AFSHAN SHAIKH Under the Direction of W. Crawford Elliott, Ph.D. ABSTRACT The mineralogy and geochronology of silt fractions were determined for a representative Andisol (volcanic soil) from the Mt. Daisen area as well as for collected bulk reference fallout materials from Japan, and Kyoto dust samples. X-ray diffraction techniques and K-Ar methods were used to determine the age values and mineralogy of test materials. The reference fallout material was the youngest (21 Ma). The Kyoto dust was oldest (210 Ma) of all materials. The silt from the Andisol yielded older age values closer to the top and younger values closer to the parent tephra. The silt mineralogy revealed small amounts of 10 Å and 14 Å phases. The presence of these phases in the silt fractions of soils having parent dactic-basaltic tephra (<1 Ma) combined with the geochronology ages of the silt fraction (21 – 210 Ma) support the hypothesis that there is an aeolian influence present in the Andisol.

He always keeps my interest in photography up and makes me keep striving for the perfect photo. He also often makes me think of the expression “when the going gets tough, the tough keep going.” Without my partner it has to also be noted that I most likely would not have climbed any of these mountains.
