In 2017, the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation (TCTF) marked Education plays a big part. 12 TAN CHIN TUAN FOUNDATION REVIEW 2016-2018 present opportunities to deepen their understanding of working in Singapore’s non-profit sector.

We are heartened when positive impact cascades and brings sustainability. At Yong-en Care Centre, a charity located in Chinatown, the internship programme funded by TCTF seeded positive outcomes, when two interns progressed to become staff. They now contribute to this charity’s mission of helping the elderly afflicted with dementia, as well as supporting children and families in need.

Where are the storms in people’s lives? Where can TCTF continue to serve, and be of comfort to those in need? Responding to a donation appeal from St. John’s Home for Elderly Persons, where the elderly residents were doing all they could to raise funds for a new sheltered home, TCTF stepped up to help by funding a new clinic, which will be part of the Home’s efforts to offer better healthcare to its frail residents. Visiting charities in Thailand, 2018

The current donation by Tan Sri Tan’s grandchildren mirrored a similar response by their grandparents. About 50 years ago, Tan Sri Tan and his wife Puan Sri Helene Tan rendered assistance too, when this Home sought help to expand its facilities to house a growing number of destitute seniors.

We aspire to carry the foundation’s mission and the legacy of Tan Sri Tan onwards, so that we continually make a difference with love and compassion. The potential to care and render hope fuel our work.

“My grandfather’s life revolved around what he believed in. People can take away every material thing you have but they cannot take away your education, values and beliefs. You must fight for these things and you work towards it because then you can make a difference.”

TCTF Council Member Ms Chew Gek Hiang shared this message with the foundation's scholars during the annual Scholars' Tea, 2016.

Tan Sri (Dr) Tan Chin Tuan was an avid advocate of life-long learning. The foundation continues his passion to raise the quality of research and education through professorships, scholarships, bursaries, supporting strategic programmes at the varsities and by encouraging knowledge-sharing among various educational institutions.

At tertiary institutions such as the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Yale-NUS College, the foundation’s endowments have supported several sterling programmes. These include the Tan Chin Tuan Professorships, Exchange Fellowships, Executive Leadership Training Programmes and Lecture Series. Over time, these programmes have strengthened the capability of local universities to advance the standard of research and to attract foreign research talent for the benefit of Singapore and the community.

EDUCATION 31 Internship

Each year, youths and academic award recipients supported by the foundation are welcomed on board TCTF’s internship programme. Interns are given a taste of the work of the foundation, enabling them to gain more knowledge of the social services sector and contribute to the community through practical work.

Besides working closely with the TCTF programme team to plan and implement initiatives for charity beneficiaries and collaborate with charity partners, the interns may also be attached to one or two charity partners to learn more about a specific cause and gain hands-on experience of the charity’s work.

The interns also gain more insight into the work of the foundation and the social service sector through attending meetings with TCTF staff, keeping up with media coverage on the social service sector and conducting research on specific issues.

Interns on a Mission to Serve TCTF interns are empowered as catalysts and co-drivers of meaningful projects.

Creativity. Imagination. Experiential Learning.

In line with TCTF’s focus on education and community development, complimentary workshops in speech & drama, music and dance broadened the children’s learning horizons.

Beneficiaries could perform onstage in a showcase for their friends and families, or be published in a children’s book.

Over time, the exposure to storytelling, plays and concerts gave them opportunities to express themselves creatively. They gained greater self- confidence as their reading and communication skills improved.

Project Cheer was started in 2008 as part of the Birth Centennial celebrations of TCTF’s founder Tan Sri Tan. It was also to encourage TCTF’s supported charities and beneficiaries to pay-it-forward by bringing cheer to the less privileged.

Since 2014, TCTF has partnered Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) for Project Cheer. Between 2016 and 2018, more than 430 ACJC students connected with 1,640 beneficiaries from TCTF-supported charities.

Student leaders pooled their own volunteers. Together they devised activities with the children before teaming up with their young mentees to bring cheer to the elderly. This “double- layered” approach promoted multi-generational bonding. Students were empowered to tailor sessions after understanding the beneficiaries’ needs and profiles.

Student leaders shared their key takeaways at the Project Cheer Closing Tea led by Mr Mervyn Sek.

“To know that many people came together for the sake of others is not the same as having fun with friends and family, where we often consider self-fulfilment. To know that people love other people, is honestly such a miracle.”
