TUFFLEY ROVERS VS. HAREFIELD UNITED TUESDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER 2020 / 7:45pm KICK OFF

THE EMIRATES FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND

OFFICIAL PROGRAMME 20/21 01

EDITOR’S

COMMENT Welcome to everyone visiting Glevum Park this afternoon, for our first game of the 2020/21 season. We start with an Emirates FA Cup, Extra Preliminary Round tie and I’d like to offer a warm welcome to the visiting players and club officials, as well as any visiting supporters. Away supporters might be few in number, as Harefield United face a 200 mile round-trip to Glevum Park tonight. We exited this, the greatest cup competition in the world, at this stage last year, as we were beaten, after a replay, by a team from the same league, North Greenford United, so we know that today we will meet challenging opposition. The year before we lost to another Spartan South Midland Premier Division team, Colney Heath, and so I’m sure Coxy will be hoping it is “third time lucky” as we look to book a home tie against Leighton Town or Abingdon United in the next round. The last season ended with something of a whimper, just as we were finding form, due to the Covid-19 pandemic but, if truth be told, 2019/20 was a pretty awful season for many clubs, with the weather, then the virus putting paid to our campaigns. Unlike twelve months ago, the squad has a very familiar feel to it, despite the change in our management team, and that is reassuring. The last two FA Cup exits have come at a time when our squad has been going through an evolutionary phase and when I look back on the defeat to North Greenford 12 months ago, the squad is unrecognisable. We are definitely a better side now, but that will count for nothing if we don’t produce a performance tonight. On that note, I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of Mark Pritchett, who recently stood down as first team manager. I will personally miss working with Pritch and it was a sad day when we accepted his resignation. There is hope that, after a short break, he might continue as a player, but if that is ‘it’, I’d like to say that the last four years have been a blast and “thank you”. We are trying to continually adapt – standing still is not an option – and hopefully visitors who are familiar with Glevum Park will recognise the further progress that has been made during the extended close season. JMJ Fabrications have, once again, been a great supporter of the club and with their help and funding support from The Football Foundation, the new pitch-side barriers have been installed. The last six months have been a real challenge for many clubs. It is good to be back in competitive action tonight and all I can say, in closing, is may the best side win! If it goes well, thirteen more wins and we will be holding the FA Cup ahead of the 2020/21 season, as well as looking forward to a season in European football…well, you’ve got to dream! Thank you to everyone who has visited today. We hope to see you again at Glevum Park this season – we need your support more than ever.

COMMENT

I would like to start by welcoming everyone visiting Glevum Park this evening, for our first home game of the season and I hope that you have an enjoyable experience. Welcome, in particular, to our guests from Harefield United. During the extended break from football here, we have been able to upgrade our hospitality offer at the ground and complete the pitch-side barriers, installing a path at the bottom end of the ground and adding some additional drainage. Much of this isn’t possible without a good team involved and I’d like to offer a huge thank you to our volunteers that have given up countless hours to ensure your visit here is safe and Covid compliant. Please be respectful of our volunteers, if one of them does need to remind you about practising social distancing. On the pitch I am looking forward to the season ahead and hope that the team can kick-on from where they left off last season. In particular, I am hoping that Richard Cox (our Caretaker Manager) and of our other managers and coaches can have a successful season. Coxy has faced a bit of a challenge in taking up the reins at such short notice, although he has probably been helped a little by the fact that he has a settled squad to work with. In addition, I would like to thank all our sponsors for their continued support which goes a long way in helping us be able to manage this fantastic club. JMJ Fabrications, Altripan UK, Severn Signs and A&R Light Haulage Ltd., in particular have been very supportive of the club in recent months. A good FA Cup run is a real bonus to clubs at this level, so I hope that we can do the business tonight. Don’t forget there are no replays this year, nor extra-time at this stage, so if the scores are level at full-time we will have a penalty shoot-out. On a separate note, our third team are now less than a week away from their 100km charity walk, in aid of Heart Heroes. At the time of writing they have already raised over £1,600 for a local charity that helps young children and their families who are living with heart conditions. We’ve been overwhelmed with the support they’ve received, both from within and outside the club, and I will be joining them on the walk. If you are able to dig deep and donate via their Virgin Money Giving page that would be fantastic! We’ve included a page in today’s programme to advertise the work of this great charity. Thank you to everyone who has visited today. We hope to see you again at Glevum Park this season.

MANAGER’S

COMMENT

Hello to all of those who are visiting us today, including our opponents from Harefield United. In my opinion, the most important thing for Tuffley Rovers, ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, was to keep the squad together from last season and we’ve managed to do that. The squad is basically an Under 23s squad, sprinkled with a couple of experienced members who understand what Tuffley Rovers is all about, so we are delighted to have kept this group together and hope to build on the foundations created last year, so that we can keep progressing and move on to the next level. Pre-season has ensured all the players have had plenty of game time and we were able to work on a few areas we want to integrate into our philosophy. All in all, we’ve had a decent pre-season period. The FA Cup ties are always an exciting occasion and I’m sure we will give it our all against dangerous opposition. The biggest factor for me is that we have no regrets come the final whistle and the players ensure that they do the club and all of you proud. Thanks for the support today.

- COXY

(NON-LEAGUE BIBLE) THAT WAS THE SEASON THAT WASN’T…a look back at 2019/20 It has become customary for our first programme of the new season to devote a couple of pages to reviewing the previous year…although according to , the season never happened! As I said (via Twitter) at the time, we will include all of last season’s games in our club records, not least because the alternative is to pretend that players like Lewis Bainbridge, Jack Beardsell, Isaac Lawrence, Miles Ferguson and Joe Shutt, amongst others, didn’t make their first team debuts. So, we will look back at 2019/20, with a degree of affection, as it was Mark Pritchett’s last as manager (little did we know that at the time) and there was plenty to be positive about by the time Covid-19 brought an early end to a season that had been decimated by some appalling weather. August 2019 A much changed squad took to the field for our first game of the 2019/20 season, with new signings Alex Avenell, Jai Maisey, Dec Earwaker, Jack Beardsell, Ellis Waugh and Martin Smith all including in the squad for the long trip to face Virginia Water on the first Saturday in August. Goals from Earwaker and substitute Luke Troke salvaged a draw, after Rovers had trailed 2-0, in what was an otherwise disappointing performance, although that looked a more positive performance when compared to the 4-0 defeat at Bishops Cleeve just three days later.

Luke Troke scores a late equaliser against Virginia Water A difficult start became more difficult within the week, as Rovers exited the FA Cup against opposition they would have hoped to have beaten, as North Greenford United took their place in the next round courtesy of a 2-1 win in the replayed game, after a 1-1 draw at Glevum Park. Although a Challenge Cup win followed against Letcombe, that was a rare positive in the opening month and defeats against Longlevens and Shortwood United (the latter a dismal showing in the FA Vase) were sandwiched either side of a creditable 3-3 draw against Brimscombe & Thrupp, after Rovers had been 3-1 down with minutes remaining. September 2019 After a rocky start to the season, Rovers had a comparatively positive second month, with only one defeat (a 3-1 reverse at home to high-flying Fairford Town) and recorded wins against Shrivenham, Thornbury Town and Cheltenham Saracens in the month, whilst also creating something of a buzz with two more 3-3 draws, home to Windsor and away at Ardley United.

A late, late Ross Langworthy free-kick restored parity against Windsor at Glevum Park

Whilst the defence did, at times, look frail there were plenty of goals being dished around and after fourteen competitive games Rovers had scored 32 times, with Jake Rhodes, Beardsell and Ross Langworthy all scoring six times each. October 2019 October started with Rovers recording a sensational 4-1 win over Binfield, who were seen as title challengers from the outset, before a less notable victory followed over strugglers Holmer Green, with the team from High Wycombe making Pritch’s team work incredibly hard for the three points.

Macaulay Herbert scored Rovers’ second in their superb 4-1 win over Binfield The weather then began to play its part in disrupting the season and a 1-1 draw with Royal Wootton Bassett Town, with Lewis Bainbridge getting Rovers’ goal, provided the last action in a month short on fixtures.

November 2019

When play resumed, after a gap of 18 days, visiting Flackwell Heath flattened the mood a little, as they recorded a 3-2 win and next up was a return trip to Holmer Green, where a rare Macaulay Herbert goal contributed to a 4-3 win that was made to look much harder than it might have done. The 5-1 thumping dished out by Westfields – who had led 4-0 within 45 minutes – did little to help confidence and it took a late Joe Shutt goal to secure a 2-2 draw against Reading City in the penultimate game of a month which ended with another cup victory, this time a 3-0 Floodlit Cup win over Bourton Rovers on 26 November.

Adam Bloomfield makes it 3-0 against Bourton Rovers to secure a Floodlit Cup win

December 2019

The final month of 2019 saw just four games played, but 20 goals in the games played, as a 2-2 draw with Windsor was followed by a 4-4 Floodlit Cup tie at Malvern Town (with Pritch scoring a hat-trick before being sent-off) in a game where Rovers had been 4-0 Statistics 2019/20 Competition Uhlsport Hellenic Premier Division, unless stated FAC = FA Cup; FAV = FA Vase; GFA = GFA Challenge Trophy; BFCC = Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup;

That was followed by a 4-3 defeat on Boxing Day, with Ty Briscoe missing a penalty that would have salvaged another 4-4 draw, before a more sedate affair two days later, as Lewis Bainbridge’s late winner separated Rovers from Lydney Town in a 1-0 win.

Mark Pritchett’s ‘screamer’ makes it 2-2 against Windsor at Stag Meadow

January 2020 The New Year started with a much delayed County Cup tie against Hardwicke AFC and an Isaac Lawrence goal was enough to record a win that set-up a tie against Bitton AFC, although that ended in a cruel defeat, as the hosts scored twice late on to take their place in the quarter-final. In between there was another disappointing defeat, away at Fairford Town, although the month ended well, as Easington Sports left Glevum Park on the end of an emphatic 3-0 victory.

Lewis Bainbridge makes it 2-0 against Easington Sports, in one of the best performances of the season February 2020 February would, unbelievably, prove to be the last month of the season for the first team but the acquisition of Cheltenham Town’s Callum Ebanks on a work experience arrangement gave hope (at least to those expecting the season to last a little longer!) that Rovers would continue to carry a goalscoring threat, as he netted three times in two appearances, helping the side to a 3-0 win over Shortwood United in the Floodlit Cup, before a brace at Brackley Town Saints resulted in a terrific 3-1 scoreline . That was to prove the last of the action for Rovers. By the time the weather had improved and Flackwell Heath were set to host our visit, a pandemic came along and swfitly ended the season.

Harefield United History

The club was formed in 1868, making it the oldest club in Middlesex. In their formative years they played under such names as Harefield Victoria and Breakspear Institute in the local Uxbridge Leagues before merging with Harefield FC in 1934 to become Harefield United, playing in the Uxbridge and District League. By 1947 the club had joined the Great Western Combination, playing at Taylors Meadow and winning the league once in the 1950-1 season. In 1964 the club moved to the Parthenon League, winning the league at the first attempt. They then joined the Middlesex League two seasons later where they stayed for five seasons, winning the league title four times and the league cup twice. In 1967-8 the club celebrated their centenary by moving to their present ground at Preston Park in Harefield, joining the Spartan League Senior Section in the 1971-2 season, staying there for four seasons, making their debut in the FA Vase in 1974-5 before progressing to Division Two of the Athenian League for the 1975-6 season. The club also made their debut in the FA Cup in 1979-80. The Athenian League folded in 1984, the year the Hares won the League Cup under manager Nobby Carpenter, making them still the current holders! The club then moved to the Division Two North for two seasons, then spent seven years in Division Two South before being relegated to Division Three where they stayed until after the 1996-7 season when lack of funds for ground improvements meant the club had to move back to the Spartan League. A year later they became founder members of the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division South, until it was renamed Division One where they finished runners up and won the League Cup, before playing in the Spartan Premier where they remained until being relegated to Division One at the end of 2015-6. This spell was the most successful in the club’s history winning the Challenge Trophy in 2002-3 and the Cup the following season when they were also runners up in the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup. Under manager Stuart Leavy the Hares were league runners up twice, in 2006-7 and again in 2008-9 when they missed out on promotion to the Ryman League by one goal difference to Biggleswade Town. In 2002 Harefield United Youth FC was formed with teams from the former Denham Youth FC, the club currently fielding over twenty teams of all ages and levels from Under 7s to Under 21s, Sunday League teams, Under 18s Allied Counties, reserves and first team with some players having progressed all the way through the ranks. In 2010 the club won the National Award for Groundsman Of The Year for Steps 5 and 6, some achievement for a club with no groundsman and the pitch maintained by volunteers. In season 2016-7 the club played five FA Cup ties and won the Middlesex Cup, finishing eighth in Division One. In season 2017-18 the Hares promoted reserve team coach Brian Keeley to Head of Youth Development with former first team player Ben Payne as his assistant, looking to expand the thriving youth programme further at Harefield. In 2018 United celebrated their 150th year of football in Harefield as a community club promoting senior, junior, Sunday and women's football. The same season 2018-9 Manager Jason Shaw gained promotion in his fourth campaign by going unbeaten all season, only dropping four points and winning 34 consecutive matches, also winning the Middlesex Premier Cup against a strong Cockfosters side. “The Invincibles” now look to start the 2019- 20 season back in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division. Grab a cup of tea and something to eat, then spend the five minutes of your half-time break trying to answer these questions. As ever, there is a theme and this week we look at some great facts about this wonderful competition… 1. Easy start. Who are the current holders of the Emirates FA Cup?

2. The 1981 FA Cup final is usually remembered for Ricky Villa’s solo effort to secure a 3-2 win for Tottenham Hotspur over Manchester City. This picture from the game features a City player who later went on to score an FA Cup final goal, too. Who is he and which team did he score for, in which year (3 points up for grabs!)?

3. We face a tie against Leighton Town or Abingdon United if we can overcome this evening’s visitors. We actually played Leighton Town in 2017/18 and recorded a 3-2 win but which team then knocked Rovers out in the next stage of the competition?

4. Which club were the first ever winners of the FA Cup, way back in 1871-72 and won it four more times before they initially disbanded in 1887?

5. Tonight’s game is Harefield United’s 72nd FA Cup tie. What is the furthest

stage they have ever advanced to in the competition?

If I told you that we had a wonderful time at Glastonbury in 1995, you might assume that that summer’s music festival (played in baking heat, I might add – I was there!) was particularly good. It was, but Tuffley Rovers’ trip to Glastonbury FC in August 1995 ended with a 5-1 victory in our first ever FA Cup tie (a Preliminary Round fixture). An opportunity to host Cinderford Town followed and our campaign ended swiftly, off the back of 4-0 reverse at Glevum Park. There were plenty of goals when we met Taunton Town in August 1996, but our campaign ended immediately, courtesy of a 5-2 defeat and twelve months later we made progress, with a good win at home to Cirencester Town (we narrowly claimed a 4-3 victory in another home tie) but when Paulton Rovers came in the First Qualifying Round a 3-1 defeat spelt that end of that year’s road to Wembley. An immediate exit to Minehead Town in 1998 was another disappointment, but in 1999 the record book shows a victory over one of the now foremost non-league clubs, as we beat Eastleigh 2-1 in the First Qualifying Round. A record breaking appearance in the Second Qualifying Round almost saw us progress further, but a 1-1 draw took us to a replay at home against Lymington & New Milton, only to see us eliminated courtesy of a 5 -0 thrashing! Revenge came against Taunton Town in 2000, as we won 4-1 in the Preliminary Round, but we once again failed to progress further, as a single goal victory went in favour of our opponents Chippenham Town in the next round. Four consecutive defeats saw our cup hopes perish at the first hurdle in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 but we had another opportunity to progress in 2005/06 as our Hellenic League side hosted Elmore. A 0-0 draw took us to only our second replay ever, but we succumbed to a late goal in a 1-0 defeat in the second meeting. That was to be our last FA Cup tie for 10 years, as the club’s withdrawal from the Hellenic League just a few weeks later saw us drop to a lower level of football, rendering us unable to enter the world’s most famous cup competition. Our return, ten years later in 2015, saw a wonderful win at Ardley United (4-1), followed up with a terrific 1-0 win at home to Southern League neighbours Bishops Cleeve, before we put in a brave display against Taunton Town, before losing 3-0. Ardley gained revenge 12 months later, but our return in 2017 saw a narrow win with ten- men away at Woodley United, then a momentous day at Leighton Town, when we made an astonishing comeback from 2-0 down, with just eight minutes remaining, to win 3-2 in the dying moments of the game. Swindon Supermarine demolished a Rovers team playing most of the game with ten-men, in the next round, to end another attempt to march on the Wembley arch.

Then, two seasons ago, despite leading 1-0 at half-time thanks to Warren Mann’s penalty, we were comprehensively beaten 4-1 by Colney Heath, and exited the competition at the first stage.

Last year, against North Greenford United, we produced two fairly lacklustre performances (in our 26th and 27th FA Cup matches) and went out of the competition with a whimper. Today, in our 28th FA Cup tie, we will go in pursuit of a ninth victory; a fourth draw will no longer mean a replay and would lead to a first ever FA Cup penalty shoot-out for our club.
