Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics &A
Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes. As this has no bearing for the assignment to macro-areas, multiple mappings have been retained. 1There are another couple of hundred languages which are attested but for which our database currently lacks coordinates. -
The Beginning Of
the beginning of THE WEDDING PLANNER (from ROMANTIC FOOLS) a short comedy by Rich Orloff (ROMANTIC FOOLS, a comic revue for one man and one woman, is published and licensed by Playscripts, Inc. www.playscripts.com) The woman enters and addresses us: WOMAN When a woman and a man become engaged – it’s a magical moment, filled with the promise of love, affection and a life overflowing with joy. Then you realize you have to plan a wedding, and that magical moment is history. For months and months, you and your betrothed have to figure out a thousand details which lead to that special day when you think, “If I can make it through this, marriage will be easy.” After all that work, I think the reason the bride and groom get to march down the aisle first is so that nobody can get between them and the champagne. To help reduce the stress of all that a wedding entails, most people turn to a professional with expertise, someone they can trust, a wedding planner. The WEDDING PLANNER (MAN) enters. MAN Did I hear you say you’re looking for a wedding planner? WOMAN Well – MAN Let me present myself. He hands her a card. WOMAN “Charles H. Hungadunga the Third, Wedding and Funeral Planner. All your needs from Married to Buried.” The Wedding Planner EXCERPT, 2 MAN I’m the only wedding planner who offers a guarantee. WOMAN A guarantee? MAN If the wedding costs more than you rake in on gifts, your second wedding’s free. Now as I see it, you want a simple wedding. -

New Order Ghost Gigs a Disruption 002
New Order Ghost Gigs A Disruption 002 ORIGINALLY RECORDED FRIDAY 6 DECEMBER 1985 1.15pm, Thursday 6 December 2018 The Hive, New Cavendish Street hursday 6 December marks the anniversary of SETLIST New Order playing at our New Cavendish Street site. It is in fact the 33rd anniversary, which seems appropriate given the musical relevance of 331/3 RPM. 1985 marked the midpoint of a curious and eclectic musical 1 decade. On one level the era of Phil Collins and Paul Young, of Band Aid ATMOSPHERE Tand Bryan Adams, of Stock Aitken & Waterman and Stars Stars on 45. However outside of this superficial view the period was an amazingly diverse one. The 2 beginning of the decade saw the end of the post punk and new wave period, the DREAMS NEVER END emergence of the much maligned new romantic scene and the critically acclaimed two tone movement. At the same time rap music began to enter the mainstream 3 and later came the House Sound of Chicago and stirrings from Detroit, the PROCESSION second summer of love and the high water mark of rave culture, with the end 4 of the decade seeing guitar music enter centre stage again through the rise of SUNRISE grunge. Seminal albums were released throughout that still stand the test of time. 5 For New Order 1985 was the year of Lowlife, LONESOME TONIGHT the Festival of the Tenth Summer. Formed in 1980 from the ashes of Joy Division after the 6 untimely death of Ian Curtis, New Order were WEIRDO a groundbreaking band. Signed to Factory Records, and very much the Factory band, the 7 group had by this point released three critically 586 acclaimed albums and a batch of unassailable 8 singles, including Ceremony (A Joy Division THE PERFECT KISS song, and the first New Order single neatly seguing past and future), Temptation (the 9 first dance infused glimpse of what was to FACE UP come) and the groundbreaking Blue Monday 10 (allegedly the best selling 12" single of the time, but which lost money due to the AGE OF CONSENT technical aesthetic requirements of its sleeve). -

THE PHONOLOGY OF PROTO-TAI A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Pittayawat Pittayaporn August 2009 © 2009 Pittayawat Pittayaporn THE PHONOLOGY OF PROTO-TAI Pittayawat Pittayaporn, Ph. D. Cornell University 2009 Proto-Tai is the ancestor of the Tai languages of Mainland Southeast Asia. Modern Tai languages share many structural similarities and phonological innovations, but reconstructing the phonology requires a thorough understanding of the convergent trends of the Southeast Asian linguistic area, as well as a theoretical foundation in order to distinguish inherited traits from universal tendencies, chance, diffusion, or parallel development. This dissertation presents a new reconstruction of Proto-Tai phonology, based on a systematic application of the Comparative Method and an appreciation of the force of contact. It also incorporates a large amount of dialect data that have become available only recently. In contrast to the generally accepted assumption that Proto-Tai was monosyllabic, this thesis claims that Proto-Tai was a sesquisyllabic language that allowed both sesquisyllabic and monosyllabic prosodic words. In the proposed reconstruction, it is argued that Proto-Tai had three contrastive phonation types and six places of articulation. It had plain voiceless, implosive, and voiced stops, but lacked the aspirated stop series (central to previous reconstructions). As for place of articulation, Proto-Tai had a distinctive uvular series, in addition to the labial, alveolar, palatal, velar, and glottal series typically reconstructed. In the onset, these consonants can combine to form tautosyllabic clusters or sequisyllabic structures. -

“S.S. KUALA” Researched Passenger List Sunk at Pom Pong Island 14 February 1942 [Version 6.8.0; April 2017]
“S.S. KUALA” Researched Passenger List Sunk at Pom Pong Island 14 February 1942 [Version 6.8.0; April 2017] Preface: This list and document have been compiled as a memorial and out of empathy and respect to the women, children and men who lost their lives in that cruel attack by Japanese bombers on the small coastal ship, converted into an auxiliary vessel, “SS. Kuala” on 14 February 1942, twelve hours after it escaped from Singapore. This was the day before Singapore surrendered to the Japanese. Many of the women and children were killed on the ship itself, but even more by continued direct bombing and machine gunning of the sea by Japanese bombers whilst they were desperately trying to swim the few hundred yards to safety on the shores of Pom Pong Island. Many others were swept away by the strong currents which are a feature around Pom Pong Island and, despite surviving for several days, only a handful made it to safety. The Captain of the “Kuala”, Lieutenant Caithness, recorded of the moment “…thirty men and women floated past on rafts and drifted east and then south – west, however only three survivors were picked up off a raft on the Indragiri River, a man and his wife and an army officer…”. The bombing continued even onto the Island itself as the survivors scrambled across slippery rocks and up the steep slopes of the jungle tangled hills of this small uninhabited island in the Indonesian Archipelago – once again, Caithness, recorded “…but when the struggling women were between the ships and the rocks the Jap had turned and deliberately bombed the women in the sea and those struggling on the rocks…”. -
Planning a Catholic Wedding
Planning a Catholic Wedding "Make [your wedding] a real celebration – because marriage is a celebration – a Christian celebration, not a worldly feast! … What happened in Cana 2000 years ago, happens today at every wedding celebration: that which makes your wedding full and profoundly true will be the presence of the Lord who reveals himself and gives his grace. It is his presence that offers the 'good wine', he is the secret to full joy, that which truly warms the heart. "It is good that your wedding be simple and make what is truly important stand out. Some are more concerned with the exterior details, with the banquet, the photographs, the clothes, the flowers…These are important for a celebration, but only if they point to the real reason for your joy: the Lord's blessing on your love." - —Pope Francis’ address to engaged couples in Rome, February 14, 2014 Nowadays many engaged couples handle a lot of their own wedding planning. When at least one of the individuals is Catholic this can include making arrangements to be married in a Catholic church. Take time to prepare and plan The Roman Catholic Diocese of Peterborough requires a preparation period of one year for couples who want to be married in the Church. The preparation includes a contact with the parish in which they want to have their wedding. It is important to talk with the parish priest or deacon about what the parish allows and expects in a celebration. It is also possible that the parish can offer specific help and resources. -

The Torn Heart*
THE TORN HEART* One Tuesday morning, when the alarm clock rang, David did not get out of his bunk. Ten minutes later, his counselor opened the door to his cabin. “Come on,” he said. “You’ll be late for breakfast again.” “But Elliott, I’m tired,” David said. “Don’t be such a baby”, Elliott said impatiently. “You’re always late. Just get up and get ready. Everyone else is already dressed. Kyle and Roger, David’s cabin-mates, were just about to leave to head to the dining hall. “Wait up for David,” Elliott called to them. “We’re hungry. Why do we have to wait for that loser?” they said. Kyle and Roger waited for David, but once Elliott was out of sight, they told David he’d have to walk a few steps behind them. “We don’t want anyone to think we’re actually your friend, okay?” Once inside, David got his tray and was walking over to his table when he tripped over his shoelaces he had forgotten to tie in the rush. He regained his balance, but his milk went flying up into the air and landed in a puddle on the floor. “Look, it’s like a circus act,” a kid yelled out and everyone at his table started to laugh and point at David. “I wonder if he does tricks with balls like those trained seals?” someone else asked. David liked to play sports, but he hated camp because he was the smallest of all the boys. That day, because it had started to rain, they were supposed to play basketball indoors, which was David’s very worst sport of all.
