Pied-à-terre Mary Evelyn McKee Creating dramatic but inviting rooms

ary Evelyn McKee has design and artistry in her genes. Painting classes with her grandmother taught her how to really see, and her artist father spurred her talents. “He was so encouraging. I could put two dandelions Min a bottle, and he would proclaim it gorgeous. And my mother, an accomplished pianist, taught us tempo and movement to Mozart and Bach.” From her richly artistic upbringing, she studied art history fo- cusing on decorative arts and architecture at Hollins College. Photograph courtesy of Mundy Michael

Her approach is personal, pragmatic and artistic. “When a client is up- dating, I look for solutions that are timeless, elegant and comfortable. I try to create something fresh and forward-looking, and use personal

Formulaic design is not in her vocabulary. She seeks the singular piece that creates the frisson neces- sary for dramatic but inviting rooms.

Mary Evelyn began her design enterprise in 1986. Its success led to opening her retail in- teriors shop offering her signature palette of sunny neutrals and her eye for great design.

Whether in New York, Paris or Birmingham, her interiors shop exhibits designs for a lofty Pied-à-terre with midcentury and contempo- rary décor. Antiques add frisson and gravitas.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens Antiques at The Gardens • Art, Jewelry & Antiques | 49 MEET OUR TASTEMAKERS| Living with Flowers for Leah. Following her grand- mother’s influence, flowers later became a career that was second nature. Leah’s early years were spent in the Mississippi Delta nurturing everything green, both food and flowers, gathering all that was planted, and delivering all to delighted recipients. This southern way of life became a family tradition.

Anticipation of the garden’s bounty was only half the fun. Planning the garden was also a family affair with all the grandchil- dren participating. Most requests were honored and room made for them to grow. Ah! Waiting for the first bloom! Anticipating the vis- its that came along with deliveries of the bounty even more so. In Mississippi, these visits became events. They were always a com- munity affair. Flowers made them beautiful.

Those early family traditions along with life’s many travels melded into Leah’s design ap- proach. One of the main charac- teristics of her work is her innate ability to interpret her clients’ wants and desires. Leah then makes it happen by transform- ing space, large or small, filling it with flowers and “favorite things” making it uniquely theirs. Ultimately creating an environ- ment that fully reflects her client’s vision for their occasion. The results have often been described as alchemy. Certainly they reflect the 3 Graces: Beauty Charm and Elegance.

BIRMINGHAM BOTANICAL GARDENS| Beyond the beauty

BEYOND THE BEAUTY Birmingham Botanical Gardens brings science alive for thousands of children and adults

t’s easy to get lost in our beauty. We understand. Over 67.5 acres, Alabama’s largest living mu- seum offers some of its most scenic trails among more than 12,000 different living plants in over 25 unique gardens. And we’re a cheap date. For nearly 50 years, The Gardens has opened Iits gates from dawn until dusk to romantic picnics and strolls. We’ve seen plenty of “Yes,” and even one or two “I, do’s.” But our depth goes beyond our beauty. If our good times and our pretty face reel you in, we’re going to win you over with our brains. Our mission, our reason for being, is to educate the public about plants, gardens and the environment.

Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens works hard, year-round, to raise money to fund free, cur- riculum-based Discovery Field Trips to Birmingham-area schoolchildren. Our award-winning, flag- ship program is designed to meet the Alabama State Course of Study on six elementary school (K-6) science themes: plant propagation, nutrient cycling (George Washington Carver), Native Americans, tropical rainforests, interdependence (Bar- ber Alabama Woodlands) and trees.

These programs are offered free to schools and students and are led by trained docents. Last year, this program continued its growth, achieving an impressive number of 10,700 students served.

Much of these funds are raised through our special events, like Antiques at The Gardens. Because of the public’s participation and generosity in these events, nearly all the students of those who participated were able to do so absolutely free, including transportation expenses. continued on page 62
