Swedish Literature on the British Market 1998-2013: A Systemic Approach Agnes Broomé A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UCL Department of Scandinavian Studies School of European Languages, Culture and Society September 2014 2 I, Agnes Broomé, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. …............................................................................... 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the role and function of contemporary Swedish fiction in English translation on the British book market in the period 1998-2013. Drawing on Bourdieu’s Field Theory, Even Zohar’s Polysystem Theory and DeLanda’s Assemblage Theory, it constructs a model capable of dynamically describing the life cycle of border-crossing books, from selection and production to marketing, sales and reception. This life cycle is driven and shaped by individual position-takings of book market actants, and by their complex interaction and continual evolution. The thesis thus develops an understanding of the book market and its actants that deliberately resists static or linear perspectives, acknowledging the centrality of complex interaction and dynamic development to the analysis of publishing histories of translated books. The theoretical component is complemented by case studies offering empirical insight into the model’s application. Each case study illuminates the theory from a different angle, creating thereby a composite picture of the complex, essentially unmappable processes that underlie the logic of the book market. The first takes as its subject the British publishing history of crime writer Liza Marklund, as well as its wider context, the Scandinavian crime boom.

On the other hand, Kajsa Lindsten Öberg demonstrates that literature, be it for adults or for children, is not entirely uninfluenced by current affairs. Mirror or not, the following two articles about recent Swedish titles identify themes connected with public debate, but also include some exposing testimonies about the most private sphere. There is a mounting international interest in Swedish literature. Swedish books are found on bestseller and “critics’ choice” charts all over the world, and the publication of translations is no longer limited to a handful of specialist publishers. Bidding for titles occurs more and more often, even for translations of previously unpublished writers. Ingrid Elam and Kajsa Lindsten Öberg have been requested to com- ment on this year’s published books for the Frankfurt Book Fair 2000. The selection of titles and the opinions are entirely their own. The com- ments are usually short but will hopefully encourage further reading. For more information about the authors, we refer you to each respective publisher. Information about funding of translations can be obtained from the Swedish Institute.

  • Vampire in the Stockholm Suburbs: Let the Right One in and Genre Hybridity
JSCA 1 (1) pp. 55–70 Intellect Limited 2010 Journal of Scandinavian Cinema Volume 1 Number 1 © 2010 Intellect Ltd Article. English language. doi: 10.1386/jsca.1.1.55_1 feature article ROCHELLE WRIGHT University of Illinois Vampire in the Stockholm suburbs: Let the Right One In and genre hybridity ABSTRACT KEYWORDS The article argues that one crucial factor in the success of the Swedish vampire vampire films film Låt den rätte komma in/Let the Right One In (Alfredson, 2008) is that it genre seamlessly merges several apparently disparate genres to create a hybrid form that hybridity appeals to widely divergent audiences. A detailed analysis of the film demonstrates gender identity how it simultaneously draws on and departs from common themes and motifs of the Other indigenous Swedish film as well as vampire film tradition, combining elements of Sweden the horror film, the coming-of-age story and the realistic socio-psychological drama to create a unique mix of the innovative and the familiar. A comparison of critical responses in Sweden with those in the English-speaking world sheds further light on genre-specific expectations and ways the film transcends them. When John Ajvide Lindqvist’s Låt den rätte komma in/Let the Right One In was published in 2004, he declared it to be the first Swedish vampire novel since Victor Rydberg’s Vampyren/‘The Vampire’, published in 1848 (Ordfront 2004). Though this claim may be hyperbole, the horror genre, as opposed to crime fiction, has hardly been a staple of recent Scandinavian popular literature. 55 JSCA 1.1_Art_Wright_55-70.indd 55 11/1/10 11:53:53 AM Rochelle Wright Let the Right One In received almost universally positive reviews and was hugely popular with readers as well.

ENG 215 Module 7 Lecture Notes The Human Monster: John Ajvide Lindqvist’s Handling the Undead This lecture introduces you to the characters of the novel before you begin reading. Here, I wish to highlight some basic character traits and the purpose of each character to guide your reading. Please be attentive to your own expectations and see if you feel they are met by the end of the novel. John Ajvide Lindqvist Before discussing the characters, though, here is a brief biography of our author. John Ajvide Lindqvist is a contemporary Swedish author, born in 1968. After a career as a magician and stand-up comedian, he became a writer of horror stories. His books are published in 29 countries. He is best known for his vampire tale, Let Me In or Let the Right One In (depending on the translation), which was adapted to films in Sweden and the United States. Like Handling the Undead, Let Me In defies expectations of vampire fiction, creating a surprising amount of empathy for the novel’s vampire. Lindqvist’s work overall, then, tends to push readers to view circumstances in a different, even jarring, way. His work, therefore, raises important philosophical questions as well as entertains. He’s often referred to as the Swedish Stephen King. David and Eva David and Eva set the tone early on. The second chapter of the book, entitled “What have I done to deserve this?” starts with David, and the first word is “Death. .” alone in italics on the top of the page followed by two more mentions of death, yet another being “Death.

  • Palgrave Gothic
Palgrave Gothic Series Editor Clive Bloom Middlesex University London, UK This series of gothic books is the frst to treat the genre in its many inter- related, global and ‘extended’ cultural aspects to show how the taste for the medieval and the sublime gave rise to a perverse taste for terror and horror and how that taste became not only international (with a huge fan base in places such as South Korea and Japan) but also the sensibility of the modern age, changing our attitudes to such diverse areas as the nature of the artist, the meaning of drug abuse and the concept of the self. The series is accessible but scholarly, with referencing kept to a mini- mum and theory contextualised where possible. All the books are reada- ble by an intelligent student or a knowledgeable general reader interested in the subject. 2018 SAA Seminar: Shakespeare and the Modern Novel 1 Leader: Douglas Trevor, University of Michigan ([email protected]) Elena Sandin, University of Leon (Spain) To be born or not to be born: Jan McEwan's Nutshell as a rewriting of Hamlet The aim of my paper is to analyse Jan McEwan's Nutshell, published in September 2016 on the occasion of the fourth centenary of Shakespeare's death, as a modern rewriting of Hamlet. The novel focuses on the love triangle integrated by Claude [Claudius], Gertrude [Trudy] and King Hamlet [John Caircross] and narrates how the lovers plot the murder of the husband from the unusual perspective of a proto-Hamlet In the womb. The reason why McEwan particularly chose to reinterpret this play seems to be related to the themes it develops, since they are akin to the central issues of his narrative. Thus, despite the fact he Is rewriting a Shakespearean work, the author remains faithful to his style and favourite topics. In McEwan's fiction, the function of the family is destructive rather than constructive conditioning the later development of the children, rendering them devoid of the affection needed. Nutshell also depicts his recurrent configuration of female mothers as authoritative and destructive especially for the natural growth of their offspring. Thus, this paper tackles issues related to family in McEwan's Nutshell, such as the destructive role of the mother or the lack of parental affection. Bibliography: de Ia Concha, M. A. (2012). The lonely boy's wish for a friend seems to come true when he meets Eli, also 12, who moves in next door to him with her father. A pale, serious young girl, she only comes out at night and doesn't seem affected by the freezing temperatures. Coinciding with Eli's arrival is a series of inexplicable disappearances and murders. One man is found tied to a tree, another frozen in the lake, a woman bitten in the neck. Blood seems to be the common denominator – and for an introverted boy like Oskar, who is fascinated by gruesome stories, it doesn't take long before he figures out that Eli is a vampire. But by now a subtle romance has blossomed between Oskar and Eli, and she gives him the strength to fight back against his aggressors. Oskar becomes increasingly aware of the tragic, inhuman dimension of Eli's plight, but cannot bring himself to forsake her. Frozen forever in a twelve-year-old's body, with all the burgeoning feelings and confused emotions of a young adolescent, Eli knows that she can only continue to live if she keeps on moving.
