They have been reduced to a one dimensional version of themselves and defined by societies White – male hegemonic background. Currently, limited research exists on the experiences of African American (AA) women graduate students from an Afrocentric perspective. Despite the increase enrollment of AA women in higher education, barriers to degree completion still persist as evidenced by the lower rates of graduation. The lack of AA women in higher education demonstrates that the literature holds a minority position not unlike that of AA women in society. Subsequently, the accomplishments, challenges and overall experiences of these students are missing. To date, both scholarly literature and educational praxis have dimensional voids in addressing the needs of women of African descent in the academy. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe and understand the experiences of African American women graduate students by elevating their voices. The two mechanisms of Black Feminist Thought: Matrix of domination and intersectionality were used to understand the women’s experiences in the context of being Black first, gendered a woman second and then the issues that arise from a textured life where intersections of identity occur. This study addresses the gap in research by not only drawing attention to statistical outcomes as reported by National reporting agencies on student academic success but also brings to the surface the lived experiences of AA women graduate students with respect to how they see their epistemological selves. The researcher used both a survey and interviews to highlight the ways institutions further iii marginalize AA women graduate students. Finally, this study provides recommendations rooted in the African philosophy of Ubuntu to affirm these women and thus affirm our own humanity. Recommendations are shared in relation to faculty and staff working with AA women graduation students, institutional policy and practice, and reconceptualizing human rights. iv This dissertation, written under the direction of the candidate’s dissertation committee and approved by the members of the committee, has been presented to and accepted by the Faculty of the School of Education in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education. I have learned how to persevere against all odds and have grown tremendously journeying with them. There were times when the road seemed arduous and unbearable but I was reminded that this too would pass and that there was light at the end of the tunnel. I am thankful for our long talks about community building.     Slavery in the United States - Wikipedia Page 1 of 25 Slavery in the United States Slavery in the United States was the legal institution of human chattel enslavement, primarily of Africans and African Americans, that existed in the United States of America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Slavery had been practiced by Americans under British rule from early colonial days, and was legal in all Thirteen Colonies at the time of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It lasted until the end of the American Civil War. By the time of the American Revolution (1775–1783), the status of slave had been institutionalized as a racial caste associated with African ancestry.[1] When the United States Constitution was ratified (1789), a relatively small number of free people of color were among the voting citizens (male property owners).[2] During and immediately following the Revolutionary War, abolitionist laws were passed in most Northern states and a movement developed to abolish slavery. Most of these states had a higher proportion of free labor than in the South and economies based on different industries. They abolished slavery by the end of the 18th century, some with gradual systems that kept adults as slaves for two decades. However, the rapid expansion of the cotton industry in the Deep South after the invention of the cotton gin greatly increased demand for slave labor, and the An animation showing when United States territories and states Southern states continued as slave societies. T. Coleridge’s writings on method and imagination from the 1815 composition of Biographia Literaria through the publication of the “Essays on the Principles of Method” in the 1818 Friend. I demonstrate how these writings clarify, develop, and indeed repair Coleridge’s earlier theory of imagination by articulating its role within a general theory of inquiry meant to comprehend the works of science and literature as methodical investigations. Whereas the Biographia fails in its attempt to ground the imagination within a conception of the self as intellectually intuited in a manner conceived by German Idealists such as Schelling, Coleridge’s “Essays on Method” explore the imagination through a theory of inquiry predicated on the discovery, analysis, and contemplation of relations. I argue that Coleridge aligns the operation of the secondary imagination to a logical function: the eduction of an “idea,” according to Coleridge’s precise sense of that term as a necessarily tautegorical relation – one that expresses the same subject, but with a difference. It is ideas, so conceived, that serve to guide inquiry. Coleridge’s refinement of the theory of imagination is done in serve of his argument that ideas are “constitutive” -- that is, they play a fundamental role in what it is, internal to our constitution and that of the world, that enables inquiry in the first place -- and should be seen as part of Coleridge’s answer to what he identifies as the highest problem of philosophy in the 1816 Statesman’s Manual.

It thus relied on a reproductive logic that was inseparable from the explanatory power of race. As a result, women and their experiences of enslavement shed critical light on what it meant to be enslaved or free in the early modern Atlantic world. Regardless of the rate of reproduction among the enslaved—which remained low in all early American slave societies—the ideological solidity of those slave societies needed reproducing women. Building a system of racial slavery on the notion of heritability did not require the presence of natural population growth among the enslaved, but it did require a clear understanding that enslaved women gave birth to enslaved children. Resituating herita- bility was key in the practice of an enslavement that systematically alienated the enslaved from their kin and their lineage. Enslaved people had to be understood as dispossessed, outside of the normal networks of family and community, to justify the practice of mass enslavement.

    THE THIRTEENTH AMENDMENT AND THE REGULATION OF CUSTOM Darrell A.H. Miller* Custom is an underdeveloped concept in Thirteenth Amendment jurisprudence. While a substantial body of work has explored the tech- nical meaning of custom as it applies to § 1983 and, to a lesser extent, Congress’s power to enforce the Fourteenth Amendment, few scholars have offered sustained treatment of custom as a way to understand the meaning and scope of the Thirteenth Amendment. This gap exists de- spite the fact that Congress specifically identified custom as a subject of regulation when it passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866 and despite the fact that the Thirteenth Amendment operates directly on the behavior of private parties. The fact that the Thirteenth Amendment can be applied to custom has important implications for how the Amendment should be construed. In particular, the concept of custom—especially as it relates to practices that upheld the slave system in the South—helps give shape and content to the other undefined terms the Thirteenth Amendment has generated: the “badges,” “incidents,” and “relics” of slavery. Ultimately, the concept of custom can help guide policymakers and judges who must consider the scope, the limitations, and the continuing relevance of the Thirteenth Amendment in the twenty-first century. The plantation is the belly of the world. Partus sequitur ventrem—the child follows the belly. The master dreams of future increase. The modern world follows the belly. Gestational language has been key to describing the world-making and world-breaking capacities of racial slavery. What it created and what it destroyed has been explicated by way of gendered figures of conception, birth, parturition, and severed or negated maternity. To be a slave is to be “excluded from the prerogatives of birth.” The mother’s only claim—to transfer her disposses- sion to the child.
