Marjorie Barnard: a re-examination of her life and work June Owen A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of New South Wales Australia School of the Arts and Media Faculty of Arts and Social Science Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Australia's Global UNSWSYDNEY University Surname/Family Name OWEN Given Name/s June Valerie Abbreviation for degree as give in the University calendar PhD Faculty Arts and Social Sciences School School of the Arts and Media Thesis Title Marjorie Barnard: a re-examination of her life and work Abstract 350 words maximum: (PLEASE TYPE) A wealth of scholarly works were written about Marjorie Barnard following the acclaim greeting the republication, in 1973, of The Persimmon Tree. That same year Louise E Rorabacher wrote a book-length study - Marjorie Barnard and M Barnard Eldershaw, after agreeing not to write about Barnard's private life. This led to many studies of the pair's joint literary output and short biographical studies and much misinformation, from scholars beguiled into believing Barnard's stories which were often deliberately disseminated to protect the secrecy of the affair that dominated her life between 1934 and 1942. A re-examination of her life and work is now necessary because there have been huge misunderstandings about other aspects of Barnard's life, too. Her habit of telling imaginary stories denigrating her father, led to him being maligned by his daughter's interviewers. Marjorie's commonest accusation was of her father's meanness, starting with her student allowance, but if the changing value of money is taken into account, her allowance (for pocket money) was extremely generous compared to wages of the time.

  • Faculty 2016-17 Dear Colleagues, This Fall Semester, We Welcome a Talented New Group of Faculty to the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences
New Faculty 2016-17 Dear Colleagues, This fall semester, we welcome a talented new group of faculty to the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. This is an exciting time in Arts & Sciences, as we continue to reap the rewards from the efforts of faculty search committees, department chairs, program directors, associate deans, and other faculty who collaborate on recruiting and retaining the best and brightest scholars, researchers and educators. We are in the midst of a generational turnover of distinguished faculty, and the faculty joining us this academic year represent an ambitious campaign that has brought more than 175 new faculty members to the College in the last three years. By the end of this decade, nearly half of the Arts & Sciences faculty are projected to have begun their UVA appointments within the last 10 years. We aim to continue recruiting at the highest level of excellence as we seek a diverse faculty supporting a spectrum of emerging cross-disciplinary initiatives. The University of Virginia’s longstanding reputation for excellence in undergraduate education and graduate study is based on exceptional teaching and research, and this time of transition within the College only serves to strengthen this world-class institution. Arts & Sciences welcomes 67 new faculty members this year, and the biographies included in this booklet provide a snapshot of the varied gifts and talents each of them brings to the College. They all represent a key step forward in the College’s efforts to expand our vibrant and flourishing community. On behalf of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, I celebrate the arrival of our new colleagues and look forward to the collective and singular impacts they will have, on the University of Virginia and beyond.

Title. 327.41092 Editor: Julie Stokes Designer: Beverly Swifte Proofreader: Tony Twining Printed by Lamb Printers, Perth FOREWORD Autobiographies all too often conceal the true essence of their authors, instead depicting them as they see themselves or, perhaps worse, as they would wish to be seen. Collected letters are sometimes little better, concealing from the addressee, and consequently from other readers, as much or more than they reveal. John Mason's remarkable work is neither autobiography nor conventional collection of letters. From it there emerges a fascinating portrait of a man's development from 17-year-old soldier at the end of the Second World War to senior diplomat of some 40 years later; insights, too, into many of the events of the troubled second half of this century. The letters collected here are those John Mason wrote regularly, for over 40 years, to his mother and, after her death, to his sister; recounting his remarkable and very varied career over those years.

  • A QED Framework for Nonlinear and Singular Optics
A QED framework for nonlinear and singular optics A thesis submitted by: Matt M. Coles as part of the requirements for the degree of PhD in the School of Chemistry University of East Anglia Norwich NR4 7TJ © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author's prior, written consent. The research in this thesis has not been submitted previously for a degree at this or any other university. Except where explicitly mentioned, the work is of my own. M. M. Coles January 2014 Abstract The theory of quantum electrodynamics is employed in the description of linear and nonlinear optical effects. We study the effects of using a two energy level approximation in simplifying expressions obtained from perturbation theory, equivalent to truncating the completeness relation. However, applying a two-level model with a lack of regard for its domain of validity may deliver misleading results. A new theorem on the expectation values of analytical operator functions imposes additional constraints on any atom or molecule modelled as a two-level system. We introduce measures designed to indicate occasions when the two-level approximation may be valid. Analysis of the optical angular momentum operator delivers a division into spin and orbital parts satisfying electric-magnetic democracy, and determine a new compartmentalisation of the optical angular momentum. An analysis is performed on the recently rediscovered optical chirality, and its corresponding flux, delivering results proportional to the helicity and spin angular momentum in monochromatic beams.
