CEO Activism and Firm Value Anahit Mkrtchyan, Jason Sandvik, Vivi Z. Zhu* January 2021 Abstract We investigate the impact of CEO activism, the increasingly common practice of CEOs speaking out on social and political issues, on firm value. CEO activism may be beneficial for shareholders, as it can bolster firms’ relationships with customers and employees. Alternatively, CEO activism may be detrimental if it alienates stakeholders with opposing views. Consistent with the former, we find that CEO activism results in a positive market reaction and higher valuations. These results can be explained by increased employee productivity and innovation, suggesting that CEO activism may improve corporate reputation in labor markets. Additionally, activist CEOs benefit from more future directorships. Keywords: CEO Activism, firm value, productivity, innovation. We set out to solve a critical business problem—how does Under Armour win over a massive new target that outright rejects the brand? It started with a truth about how their new target approaches fitness, then evolved into a big cultural insight about what it means to be a woman in the twenty-first century. This translated into a creative idea that connected Under Armour’s strong performance values to the true stories of women today achieving success on their own terms. We began 2020 with the same positive momentum that drove record revenues in 2019. The first quarter showed significant growth until COVID-19 leaped from Asia to Europe, the United States and virtually every market around the globe. By the end of March, most of the world pressed pause as the pandemic took hold and within weeks, we temporarily closed offices and stores, and faced a new normal of doing business and living. At Skechers, the ability to pivot quickly has been a hallmark of our business and success since our beginning. 2020 put our flexibility to the test as we adapted to this new reality. With the global infrastructure we have in place, our teams around the world were able to effectively work from home. The speed of our actions early on allowed us to weather the worst of the pandemic in the first and second quarters with as minimal impact as possible considering the unprecedented challenges. By the close of the second quarter, China had already returned to sales growth of 11.5 percent, and many of our biggest international markets, including Germany and the United Kingdom, showed meaningful recovery. Our quick action and our efforts to efficiently manage both inventory and expenses also resulted in Skechers emerging in a relatively strong position as markets began to re-open. -
