Under Armour is an international athletic-wear company that is based on the technology of synthetic fabrics to help athletes perform their best in all types of weather.

Kevin Plank founded Under Armour in 1996 at the age of 23 after he found himself constantly having to change his shirt due to sweat. Plank is a former college football player, having been the special teams captain for the University of Maryland. He started the compan out of his grandmothers basement and sold his products out of the trunk of his car. Under Armour moved to its current headquarters in Baltimore in 1998.

In 2003, Under Armour launched its Protect this House commercial, the compans first ever television campaign. Protect this House resonated with athletes everywhere, and is the leading factor behind Under Armour becoming a household name and competitive athletic-wear brand.

Plank took the company public on November 18, 2005, and it became the first United States-based company in five years to debut on the stock exchange and double on its first day of trading.

Under Armour officially entered the athletic footwear market in 2008 after it introduced its first line of performance trainers. To ears later, Under Armours revenue passed $1 billion, which is almost quadruple that of what it was five years before.

The company introduced cotton into its apparel in 2011 with the development of Charged Cotton®, which can be worn in high performance situations and be trusted to dry quickly. Soon after, Under Armour released its Charged Cotton Storm line, which incorporated both quick-drying cotton and water-resistant technology.

2 campaign internationally. It released its I Will What I Want campaign starring principal ballerina and supermodel Gisele Bundchen, which emphasized strong women going after what they want.

The company recently announced its plan to expand its global headquarters in Baltimore. This expansion will create thousands of new jobs, as well as make sure the production of apparel remains close to home. As of 2016, Under Armour had 15,200 employees. Its 2017 total revenue was $5 billion.

Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run is a charity designed to teach young girls about their worth and improve their self-confidence through lessons based on body positivity and female empowerment along with running.

Baker deemed running important because it encourages a healthy lifestyle, as well as helps build confidence through accomplishment.

There are currently over 200 chapters in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with more than 100,000 volunteers. Each season ends with a 5K run that the girls complete along with their running buddies and community.

The goal of the sneaker design contest and obstacle course is to promote body positivity and confidence in oneself through the clothing that they wear coupled with physical activity. Body Positivity and Self-Confidence in Young Girls

In the past, body image issues were thought to mainly affect young adults and women. Studies have shown, however, that self-confidence begins to decrease in girls as young as 9 years old. Half of girls between the ages of 10 and 13 will experience bullying ranging from name calling to exclusion.

According to the Dove Self-Esteem Fund, seven out of 10 girls believe that they do not compare to others when it comes to appearance, intelligence or bonds with family and friends.

Younger girls are more susceptible to developing negative views of their bodies and worth, leading to the possibility of developing eating disorders later on in their life.

There has been a lack of female representation in the working world, with women only making up three percent of all Fortune 500 CEOs. As a result, it has been harder for girls to see themselves being successful outside of school.

Girls on the Run is doing its part to make sure girls know that they can achieve anything they want to. According to a study conducted by Maureen Weiss from the University of Minnesota, 97 percent of Girls on the Run participants obtained important life skills they could use both inside and outside school. Eighty-five percent of participants improved in competence, confidence, character, connection and contribution, which are the foundations of the charity. Ninety percent of participants said that they have used what they have learned to support others.
