Scope and Contents

This collection of miscellaneous letters, articles, pamphlets, reports, newsclippings, and photographs is part of the Brandeis University Special Collections' extensive set of material related to the trial and legacy of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti.

The collection includes copies of letters from Sacco and Vanzetti as well as the correspondence and numerous publications of their supporters. The photographs in the collection include a few images of Sacco and Vanzetti's family members, along with their friends and supporters. In addition, among other topics, the images document the jury, ballistic evidence, and locations discussed in the Sacco-Vanzetti trial.

Note that there exists some overlap of materials between this collection and Brandeis University's other Sacco and Vanzetti collections. These miscellaneous documents, arranged by date, relate to the Sacco-Vanzetti trial but do not fall into the other series' categories. They include a 1920 Pinkerton report, a 1920 diagram of the crime scene, 1927 meeting minutes of the Citizens' Committee on the Sacco-Vanzetti case, the transcript of an interview with Mario Buda [alternate spelling to Boda], and a 1957 press release calling for the posthumous exoneration of Sacco and Vanzetti.

"Sacco-Vanzetti Case: Pinkerton Report on South Braintree Box 1 Folder 30 Holdup," 28 pages, two copies, 1920 Date: 1920 Scope and Contents

Folder includes bound Pinkerton report (two copies), plus an additional typescript statement from Tom O'Connor, Secretary of the Committee for the Vindication of Sacco and Vanzetti, explaining how he alerted Sacco and Vanzetti's defense counsel to the existence of the 1920 report in 1926. These copies of the report may be ones typed up by O'Connor himself (as noted in his statement). O'Connor notes that most of the reports within the Pinkerton report, ranging from April 17, 1920 to February 13, 1921, were submitted by Henry Hellyer, or H. H.

Along with the loose typescript pages of the meeting minutes, the folder includes a typed note on Harvard Law School letterhead. Dated April 11, 1927, the note is addressed to Mr. [John F.] Moore (in whose office the meeting was held) and offers him a copy of the minutes. The note concludes with the handwritten signature of Professor Felix Frankfurter.

Buda, Mario, "The Story of Mario Buda Before the Jury of the Box 1 Folder 33 World," 18 pages, typescript, annotated in unidentified hands, Messina, , February 14-16, 1928 Date: February 14-16, 1928 Scope and Contents

Mario Buda was also known as "Mike Boda," the "ringleader of the bandit gang" with whom Sacco and Vanzetti were accused of being in collaboration. Sacco and Vanzetti supposedly left the scene of the crime in a

Buick belonging to "Boda." By 1928, Buda had returned to Italy and was being held on the island of Lipari as a political prisoner. Boston resident Edward Houlton James obtained permission from to visit and interview Buda about his connections to the Sacco- Vanzetti case.
