The originals of these materials are housed elsewhere (see f.1). There are typed transcripts of early newspaper articles from Arizona and California newspapers concerning events, mining and growth in Cochise County. Extensive card indexes include indexes by personal name with article citations and appearances in great registers as well as an index to his published version of George Parson’s diaries. There is also a photocopy of the Arizona Quarterly Illustrated published in 1881. Series 2: Manuscripts and publications include: manuscripts and articles about environmental issues, the Grand Canyon, and Tombstone, AZ. Also included are Patagonia Roadrunner from 1967-1968 and Utopian Times in Alaska from 1970, two publications for which Chafin wrote. The collection contains correspondence, mostly pertaining to environmental issues, and a Chafin family genealogy. Finally, there is printed matter on Sidney M. For nearly a century, the cowboy boot has enjoyed a special status as one of the most treasured of Texas icons. Although riding boots date back for centuries, and although ranches first appeared in Texas during the Spanish colonial era, the basic pattern of the cowboy boot was forged in the crucible of the post-Civil War trail drives; between 1866 and 1890, mounted cowboys drove millions of head of Texas cattle to northern and western markets along such famous trails as the Chisholm, Western, and Goodnight-Loving. Boot makers in Texas and Kansas responded to suggestions from those cowboys regarding the design of their footwear, and a slimmer boot with a higher heel, more rounded toe, and rounded, reinforced instep began to be developed. During the course of the 20th century, cowboy boots gained a mass appeal that ultimately extended to foreign lands; this popularity was driven by an enthusiasm for the West that was fostered in the 1920s and 1930s by radio shows and movie serials and in the post-World War II decades by rodeos and dude ranches; the public’s fascination with cowboys and their apparel has also been fired by movie screen idols such as Tom Mix, by entertainers such as Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and Dale Evans, and, in recent years, by movies such as Urban Cowboy and Silverado.

    The History of Olsen-Stelzer Boots

    Olsen-Stelzer Boots SINCE 1900 By Danna Burns-Shaw he History of Olsen-Stelzer Boots Nocona, Texas was settled in the 1870’s when cattlemen TBroaddus and Jordan moved 15,000 cattle into the region and established a ranch not far from the present town site. In 1889, the railway arrived and with that news, boot maker Herman J. Justin “Daddy Joe” moved his boot shop from Spanish Fort, Texas, along the Chisholm Trail to Nocona, Texas. Daddy Joe realized when he built boots along the Chisholm Trail that the cowboys needed tough and protective footwear. The cowboys needed a tall shaft to protect the calf of the leg from the constant contact with the saddle. The toe needed to be pointed to find the narrower stirrups back then and the high heel was a safety feature; it prevented the foot from slipping through the stirrup, getting hung up or worse, being drug to death. When cowboys came to town on the cattle drives, they would go to Daddy Joe and have their feet measured. The cowboys did not have the money to pay Mr. Justin for their boots until they drove the cattle up the trail and delivered the herd, receiving payment upon delivery. Once they had their payday, they would make their way back down the Chisholm Trail to pick up their boots on the trip back home.
