They were dressed for town but loaded for bear. Thus began the famous march towards destiny. Virgil, Wyatt, Morgan and Doc walked slowly down Fremont Street toward the confrontation that would become known as the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Virgil carried a walking stick in his right hand and a six-gun in his waistband. Wyatt and Morgan were carrying pistols, and Doc was concealing the Wells Fargo shotgun under his undercoat. As they came within ten feet of the Clantons and McLaurys, Virgil called out, “Boys, throw up your hands, I want your guns.” Then something went terribly wrong. Someone fired a shot, and as Ike Clanton put it, “the ball opened.” Within thirty seconds, six men had been shot. Billy Clanton and both McLaury brothers were dead or dying; Virgil and Morgan Earp were seriously wounded, and Doc Holliday was slightly hurt. Wyatt was unscathed. So was Ike, the instigator of it all, who had run away when the shooting began.1 Forty-seven years later, an old man rested in a small, 51 tat1e01.indd 51 1/2/2015 3:26:07 PM 52 ARIZONA GUNFIGHTERS nondescript Los Angeles tourist cottage, attended by his wife, a kitten, and a doctor. Wyatt Stapp Earp died early on the morning of a bright mid-January day. His last words raised more questions than answers. “Supposing—supposing—” he had said to no one in particular before falling back on a pillow with an exasperated “Oh well.”2 We can easily suppose what might have happened to that wide spot in the road called Tombstone, Arizona, were it not for Wyatt Earp and a long-ago gunfight whose details and aftermath are vigorously argued by knowledgeable historians to this day. Tombstone—the O.K. Corral—a place and time many only slightly familiar with the American West think they know all about. And yet, there are still many questions. Who started the fight? Did the McLaurys or Clantons try to surrender? Did the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday get away with murder? Why were all these people in the middle of the desert anyway? One word answers the last question: silver. An early Tombstonian could see the source of most money in the town by looking towards the surrounding hills from Fifth and Toughnut. The Grand Central and Contention Mines, as well as the Toughnut Mine, near the Tombstone water tank, could be seen in the distance, as could the West Side Mine and the Lucky Cuss. The early life of Tombstone, the most famous place in the American West, was not much different than that of an earlier boomtown called Gila City nearby. Men “hurried to the spot with barrels of whiskey and billiard tables. Traders crowded in with wagonloads of pork and beans; and gamblers came with cards and Monte tables.”3 In 1861, just months after its first residents arrived, Gila City had everything but a church and jail. Three years later, a traveler reported, all that was left of that boomtown was “three chimneys and a coyote.” The silver strikes that began in 1878 assured that tat1e01.indd 52 1/2/2015 3:26:07 PM Pasteboard and Ivory 53 Tombstone would be more, much more than that. And where there were miners, there were gamblers. Among the early Tombstone gambling men were Luke Short and Charlie Storms from Texas, Lou Rickabaugh and Ed Clark from Colorado, and many lesser lights. Deputy Sheriff William Breakenridge considered Bat Masterson, Doc Holliday, and Wyatt, Virgil, Morgan, and Warren Earp “from Kansas and Oklahoma” to be among the most conspicuous gamblers.4 Attorney Wells Spicer observed in February 1880 that the town boasted “two dance houses, a dozen gambling places, over twenty saloons and more than five hundred gamblers. Still, there is hope, for I know of two bibles in town.”5 The Crystal Palace and Oriental Saloon sat astride the corner of Fifth and Allen. The Palace was anything but, merely a narrow, false-fronted structure with scarcely a window. The next year the Crystal Palace became the Golden Eagle Brewery, often just called the Eagle. A second story was added to house the offices of Deputy U.S. Marshal Virgil Earp and Dr. George Goodfellow, a man destined to become a prominent West Coast surgeon. The proprietors were the Tribolet brothers of Switzerland. Godfrey Tribolet came to Tombstone with nothing, accumulated enough money to start a new business, and then sent for his brothers, with whom he built a fortune in booze and beef. The brothers became politically prominent and were even involved in futile peace negotiations between the Apache chief Geronimo and Gen. George Crook.6 The Oriental Saloon was started by Milton Joyce and William Crownover Parker, the son of a prominent Oakland, California, family. The Oriental opened on Thursday, July 22, 1880, and was described at the time as the “finest one in town.”7 The place was run by Lou Rickabaugh, who eventually hired Wyatt Earp to keep order. The faro dealers at the Oriental would eventually include Morgan Earp, Luke Short, and Buckskin Frank Leslie.8 tat1e01.indd 53 1/2/2015 3:26:07 PM 54 ARIZONA GUNFIGHTERS Of course, Tombstone was not inhabited exclusively by gamblers. Mining engineer and Yale graduate John Jay Hammonds, a nephew of legendary Texas Ranger John Coffee Hays, was among the early visitors. Noted surgeon John Goodfellow practiced in the early camp, as did Kentuckian Mark Smith, a lawyer who eventually became the first senator from Arizona. Wyatt Earp claimed many years later that the law enforcement environment in early Tombstone “was not half as bad as Los Angeles” in 1926.9 Through the early boom years, Tombstone even boasted of appearances by such stage stars as the father of playwright Eugene O’Neill, James O’Neill, who had the misfortune of catching “silver fever” during his visit. One historian noted that James O’Neill proved an easy mark in 1880 when he fell into the clutches of a swindler named George M. Ciprico. Himself a sometime amateur actor, Ciprico in 1879 salted a claim in Tombstone known as the Cumberland Mine; then as was the custom, he issued a handsome prospectus offering shares for sale.

Abstract A flurry of recent papers have attempted to taxonomically characterise eastern canids, mainly grey wolves Canis lupus, eastern wolves Canis lycaon or Canis lupus lycaon and northeastern coyotes or coywolves Canis latrans, Canis latrans var. or Canis latrans x C. lycaon, in northeastern North America. In this paper, we performed a meta-analysis on northeastern coyote taxonomy by comparing results across studies to synthesise what is known about genetic admixture and taxonomy of this animal. Hybridisation or cladogamy (the crossing between any given clades) be- tween coyotes, wolves and domestic dogs created the northeastern coyote, but the animal now has little genetic in- put from its parental species across the majority of its northeastern North American (e.g. the New England states) range except in areas where they overlap, such as southeastern Canada, Ohio and Pennsylvania, and the mid- Atlantic area. The northeastern coyote has roughly 60% genetic influence from coyote, 30% wolf and 10% domestic dog Canis lupus familiaris or Canis familiaris. There is still disagreement about the amount of eastern wolf versus grey wolf in its genome, and additional SNP genotyping needs to sample known eastern wolves from Algonquin Pro- vincial Park, Ontario to verify this.

    OLD WEST STORUES William Floyd “Willie or Billy” Claiborne, a.k.a. “The Kid” Or was his name Calyborne? Clayborn? Or was it Claborn? Or did Billy even know. There are copies of his signature in at least two of these versions. All his trial documents list him as Clayborne. Viola Slaughter, wife of the noted Arizona lawman John Horton Slaughter, knew him well and spelled it as Claibourne. Well, we do know for sure that he was born in Mississippi. Or was it Louisiana? But more than likely it was in Alabama. The 1870 census shows records that would fit all three states. The record for Mississippi spells the name as Claborn, but the census takers were not the best for spelling. But this one seems to best fit the bill for Billy (Photo at right) and it shows that he was born in Alabama. He stated in court that he was born on October 21, 1860, and was from Mississippi. So we accept the date and the fact that he probably meant that he was raised in Mississippi. He migrated to the Devil’s River area of west Texas where some accounts say he killed two men. He became a cowboy and went to work for John Horton Slaughter. He was part of a crew that drove a Slaughter herd of cattle from Texas to Arizona and stayed. On October 1, 1881, in Charleston, Arizona Territory (now a ghost town), he shot and killed a blacksmith named James Hickey at Harry Queen’s Saloon. Exactly why he did it is not known.

The originals of these materials are housed elsewhere (see f.1). There are typed transcripts of early newspaper articles from Arizona and California newspapers concerning events, mining and growth in Cochise County. Extensive card indexes include indexes by personal name with article citations and appearances in great registers as well as an index to his published version of George Parson’s diaries. There is also a photocopy of the Arizona Quarterly Illustrated published in 1881. Series 2: Manuscripts and publications include: manuscripts and articles about environmental issues, the Grand Canyon, and Tombstone, AZ. Also included are Patagonia Roadrunner from 1967-1968 and Utopian Times in Alaska from 1970, two publications for which Chafin wrote. The collection contains correspondence, mostly pertaining to environmental issues, and a Chafin family genealogy. Finally, there is printed matter on Sidney M. Rosen and Lipizzan Stallions, as well as photographs of Lipizzan Stallions and other miscellaneous material. 23 boxes, 1 outside item, 14 linear ft. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Carl Chafin was born in San Francisco, CA. While employed at Hughes Aircraft Company in Tucson, Arizona in 1966, Chafin began his life-long research into Tombstone, Arizona history and particularly the diaries of George Whitwell Parsons.

    ANTI-TRAFFICKING REVIEW 12 (2019): 140-154 The ‘Prioritizing Safety for Sex Workers Policy’: A sex worker rights and anti-trafficking initiative Alexandra Lutnick Abstract This article presents a case study of how sex worker and anti-trafficking organisations and activists in San Francisco, California, worked together to develop and pass the ‘Prioritizing Safety for Sex Workers Policy’. This policy, as enacted by the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and the San Francisco Police Department, creates a legal environment where people can come forward and report to law enforcement when they are a victim of or witness to an array of violent crimes while engaged in sex work, and not be arrested or prosecuted for their involvement in that criminalised behaviour or for any misdemeanour drug offences. The article details how the groups came together and the challenges they faced while developing the policy. The work was fuelled by the recognition that no one wants people in the sex industry to experience violence. That is true whether selling sex is their choice, influenced by their life circumstances, or something they are being forced or coerced to do. The Prioritizing Safety for Sex Workers Policy is a unique example of the way in which sex workers, people who have experienced trafficking, service providers, activists, women’s rights policymakers, the police department, and the District Attorney’s office came together around a common goal. John Henry ‘Doc’ Holliday (1851-1887) was a man devoid of fear, reputed to have killed up to fifty men (‘Caught in Denver’, 1882). Yet journalists were astonished to discover he was also a genteel, frail-looking ‘consumptive’ living with incurable tuberculosis. Holliday’s consumptive body fascinated contemporaries – partly because this impairment was traditionally associated with a Romantic, sentimental disabled identity quite incongruous with his brutal reputation, and partly because he seemed physically incapable of violence: one journalist even marvelled that his slender wrists could hold a gun (‘Awful Arizona’, 1882). Yet these early descriptions emphasised above all the elective aspects of his physical presence – his polished manners and exquisite dress and grooming – and presented his consumptive body not as a passive object of pathology or pity but, rather, as an essential component of a persona defined by self-possession, neatness, and ‘a suavity of manner for which he was always noted’ (‘Caught’, 1882). Holliday’s contemporaries delighted in the debonair consumptive gunfighter, but this delight did not last long after his death.

Except when shooting, loading, or unloading, thou shalt keep thy pistols holstered. 5. Thou shalt not close the action of thy rifle until thou loadest it at the Load Station. Thou shalt open thy rifle's action immediately after completing the rifle portion of the stage. Thou shalt not close thy shotgun except while holding it in thy hands at the firing line. 6. Suffer not thy gun to fall upon the ground, for a dropped gun is “Dead”. A loaded dropped gun is dead, and shall not rise again this day. Only the Range Officer may retrieve or pick up a dropped gun. NOTE: An empty long gun carefully staged against a barricade, wall, or other prop that subsequently slips and falls shall not result in any penalty. 7. There is no Rule #7. 8. Suffer not thine ammunition to fall upon the ground. Dropped ammo is "Dead", and may only be retrieved by the brass pickers, after the shooter has completed the stage.

    Reuben Wells Locomotive The Reuben Wells Locomotive is a fifty-six ton engine named after the Jeffersonville, Indiana, mechanic who designed it in 1868. This was no ordinary locomotive. It was designed to carry train cars up the steepest rail incline in the country at that time—in Madison, Indi- ana. Before the invention of the Reuben Wells, trains had to rely on horses or a cog system to pull them uphill. The cog system fitted a wheel to the center of the train for traction on steep inclines. You can now see the Reuben Wells at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
