  • Bamcinématek Presents the US Theatrical Premiere of Jacques Rivette’S Through-The-Looking Glass Thriller Le Pont Du Nord, Mar 22—28
BAMcinématek presents the US theatrical premiere of Jacques Rivette’s through-the-looking glass thriller Le Pont du Nord, Mar 22—28 One week only! New 35mm print! “The most alive movie I saw at the festival. Leaves me with a whole album of indelible images and unnerving emotions.”—Jonathan Rosenbaum, 1981 New York Film Festival The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/Feb 28, 2013—From Friday, March 22, through Thursday, March 28, BAMcinématek presents the US theatrical premiere run of Jacques Rivette’s Le Pont du Nord (1981), screening in a new 35mm print. A puzzle, a hallucinatory cinephilic fever dream, and a spellbinding, through-the-looking glass thriller as only French New Wave titan Rivette could make, Le Pont du Nord plays like the darker, conspiracy theory-obsessed cousin of the director’s beloved Céline and Julie Go Boating. This tale of two women follows ex-con Marie (Bulle Ogier), just out of prison, and Baptiste (Ogier’s real-life daughter Pascale, who died two years later at the age of 25), who embark on a surreal, labyrinthine odyssey through a wintry Paris. The film is replete with mysterious clues, codes, traps, and spies and unfolds as “underworld and wonderland merge in the open air; joyous whimsy blurs with justified worry; and Rivette risks exploring the scarifying powers of fantasy and paranoia with a panning, punning documentary eye” (Paul Taylor, Time Out London). Rivette, in collaboration with Bulle and Pascale Ogier as well as Oscar-nominated screenwriter Suzanne Schiffman, made Le Pont du Nord on a shoestring budget with a largely improvised script.

  • Terror's Advocate
19 May 2007 Terror's Advocate By Lisa Nesselson PTL'Avocat de la terreur (Documentary -- France) A Les Films du Losange release of a Rita Dagher presentation of a Yalla Films, Wild Bunch production with the participation of CanalPlus, CNC, in association with Sofica Uni Etoile 3. (International sales: Wild Bunch, Paris) Produced by Rita Dagher. Co-producer, Brahim Chioua, Vincent Maraval. Directed by Barbet Schroeder; Charismatic and devious-until-proven-innocent French lawyer Jacques Verges is the go-to guy for the category of accused criminals George W. Bush -- and nearly anybody else -- would call evildoers. As well known in France as Melvin Belli or William Kunstler in their heydays, slickly unsavory Verges is the title figure in Barbet Schroeder's dense and unsettling docu "Terror's Advocate." Sure to inspire debate in France and Germany and of obvious interest to anyone who follows the roots of modern international terrorism, doc probes gray areas in the colorful life of its controversial, limelight-courting subject. Perhaps best known for having defended Klaus Barbie, bottomlessly enigmatic Verges met Pol Pot when both were students at the Sorbonne, married the heroine of the Algerian War of Independence, dropped off the map from 1970-78 and was probably an instrumental go-between in a number of affairs of state involving what some would dub freedom-fighting and others would define as terrorism. Like helmer's most famous doc subject, General Idi Amin, Verges is blood-chillingly unrepentant and self-assured. Doc's other talking heads are consistently well-spoken and engaging, but, except for the Battle of Algiers, the slaughter of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics, and perhaps the botched 1975 assault on an OPEC meeting in Vienna, many of the incidents touched upon will blend together into a diffuse lump of horror and carnage to viewers not up to speed on the bombings and hijackings that litter the semi-recent history of Western Europe.

  • Ed Pressman Dialogue with Julie Solomon, 1991
Ed Pressman Dialogue with Julie Solomon, 1991 Bruce Jenkins: We've decided to end this season. This is our first year of such dialogues with a visit not by another director or actor/director, but by a producer and not just any producer. Management hailed in a recent issue of American Film as a producer of the decade and I believe the single most interesting producer in the US, someone who has a sense of what is possible and a sense of how to make visions of filmmakers actually happen on celluloid. It's Edward R. Pressman who is very, very kindly agreed to come and talk about the work he's done for the past 20 years. I had an opportunity to see him in action a year ago at Berlin where he was doing a premiere of a new film. Bruce Jenkins: He has continued to work at an extraordinary pace making two, three, sometimes four films in a year. He is as we know right now beginning work with a native son, someone whose career we followed here at the Walker, Mark Frost who will in about a week's time be making his feature film directing debut under the production of Ed Pressman, a new film called Storyville. We're very, very pleased to highlight not only another aspect of what makes interesting, engaging, lively cinema possible, but a particular figure who's been a catalyst for filmmakers like Brian De Palma, Oliver Stone, Charles Burnett, Barbet Schroeder, and hopefully Mark Frost. Bruce Jenkins: With Ed tonight is a critical..

  • Great Authors in French Cinema Course Description Course Structure
Institut de Langue et de Culture Françaises Institut Catholique de Paris Great authors in French cinema By Patricia Maincent Course description This film course will focus on the history of french cinema, from its scientific begin- ning at the end of the 19th century, along with the industrial revolution, through the diversity of representations in the 20 th century up to the beginning of the 21st. In order to embody those changes, we will study the important authors, whose contribu- tion have made french cinema unique in its style. Historical films will be the main guideline, but in its widest aspect, from opinion position to historical reenactment and how documentary becomes historical fact. This theme has been fully explored since the beginning of cinema, and that will allow us to question representation and its di- verse evolution along with society. Leading French filmmakers challenged this redis- covery of the past, guiding us through the analysis of the language of the moving im- age. Course structure Each course will develop chronologically one moment of french cinema focusing on one filmmaker and one film. but also the historical context, of the film’s release and History. Each film will be analysed in its filmic components, (sound, editing, camera movements..) and of course discussed ; history being interesting in order to have a better view on our world. Week 1 : from the pioneers to the cinema of enchantment From document to fiction, the Lumière Brothers and Georges Méliès The trip to the moon by George Méliès, 1902 The Lumiere Brothers’ first films, 1895-1897 Méliès’ creativity brought ingenuity and poetry to followers such as Jean Cocteau or Jacques Demy Week 2 : Poetic realism : french classical cinema with Jean Renoir As France experienced its first populist movement, with the Front Populaire in 1935 and before the deterioration of the European situation with the second world war, french cinema will develop its aesthetic.

  • Retrospective BARBET SCHROEDER 52Nd Hof International Film Festival 2018
23 – 28 October 2018 Press release 2 Retrospective BARBET SCHROEDER 52nd Hof International Film Festival 2018 Munich, 26 September 2018 – The retrospective of the 52nd Hof International Film Festival is dedicated to the doyen of French cinema Barbet Schroeder. His companions were Claude Chabrol, Jaques Rivette and François Truffaut, but above all, it was with Eric Rohmer that he had a lifelong friendship and partnership. In 1962 they founded the – to this day still active – production, distribution and sales company Les Films du Losange, which produced not only their own films, but also those of other directors. “I am particularly pleased that we are dedicating this year’s retrospective to this internationally renowned director and will be screening a selection of Barbet Schroeder’s extensive body of work at the festival. It is a great honor that he will be presenting his films in person in Hof,” (Thorsten Schaumann, artistic director). Barbet Schroeder began his career as the producer of Eric Rohmer’s films. In 1969 he directed his first feature film, MORE, and became internationally known with the film REVERSAL OF FORTUNE, which dealt with the supposed murder of Sunny von Bülow by her husband Claus von Bülow. Leading actor Jeremy Irons won the Oscar® as best leading actor in 1991 for his role in the film. Barbet Schroeder’s international breakthrough came the following year with the psycho-thriller SINGLE WHITE FEMALE with Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh in the leading roles. Schroeder‘s oeuvre includes an impressive, manifold body of work. From the very beginning, he has been continuously working as a producer, screenwriter, and sometimes even as an actor in such films as QUEEN MARGOT by his fellow countryman Patrice Chéreau, in MARS ATTACKS! by Tim Burton, and DARJEELING LIMITED by Wes Anderson.
