Bharat Report Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 Abu Dhabi UAE Supported by Official Tour Partner Report | #MeetTheDetermined Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 Abu Dhabi UAE Executive Summary The 15th Special Olympics World Summer Games were held in Abu Dhabi from 14-21 March 2019 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE’s Armed Forces. With more than 7,500 athletes from over 190 nations competing, Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 was the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world setting the benchmark for the most unified Games in the 50-year history of the Special Olympics movement. The Local Organization Committee (an entity independent of Special Olympics UAE) was formed in 2017 to organize and prepare for the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – a federation of seven emirates, or states, formed in 1971: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al- Khaimah and is the largest of the seven Emirates This was India’s 9th participation at the SO World Summer Games and India participated in 14 out of 24 Olympic- type sports featuring the World Games represented by 281 Athletes (including 26 Unified partners), 71 Coaches and 4 Officials (HOD and AHOD). The SO Bharat contingent were accompanied and assisted by seven staff members, two Photographers and two Media Persons. The guests of honor included Mohammad Kaif, former Indian Cricketer and the Ambassador of Ecuador, His Excellency Hector Cueva Jacome. Khalifa Saif Alteneiji, Charge d affaires and Ms Basma Al Saadi, Head Media and Public Diplomacy Embassy of UAE , New Delhi ,visited Jai Ram Ashram on 8 March 2019 when the contingent was scheduled to depart, to wish the Athletes luck. His Excellency ensured that each Athlete was presented a flower! Preparation for the World Games The Preparation for the World Games geared up in March 2018 since when National level Camps were held across Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Odisha and Delhi until the contingent departed for the World Games venue in March 2019. I never knew that something which I used as a mode of transportation will take me Outside the country giving me an opportunity to represent my country-Shubham Himachal Pradesh The SO Bharat contingent departed for the World Games on 8 March 2019 through five flights. From the Abu Dhabi International Airport they were transported to Dubai for the Host Town Program Host Town- Dubai The team was driven to Dubai directly from the airport – a very smooth entry and transit for everyone. An intriguing part of entering the UAE was the World Games logo stamped by the Immigration authorities on the Passport! The Indian Contingent was hosted at the Holiday Inn ( Dubai Festival City ) Dubai. They remained there until the 11 th when all teams excepting Athletics and Aquatics were transported to Abu Dhabi. The Coaches briefing was an integral and constant part of the program, led by Mr Victor R Vaz, Head of the Delegation, held at least once a day, followed by more sessions if required. The areas covered at these sessions ran across discipline, effective Coach- Athlete engagement and personal care of the Athletes, specific to their abilities along with Housekeeping www.specialolympicsbharat.org 5 Report | #MeetTheDetermined Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 Abu Dhabi UAE Dr Samrat Jun MBBS General practitioner, is stationed with the contingent ensuring medical attention and care At the Host town each day commenced with a session of Warm up at the open ground adjoining the hotel. The session began with the whole group beginning together, moving to sport- specific break outs Motiongate Dubai , a Hollywood-inspired theme park, the Amity University Dubai , Global Village, the world’s leading multi-cultural park were the other venues visited. The Amity University combined the delegations from Korea, Uzbekistan and India. All the 630 Athletes were wished luck by the dignitaries present, followed by a rocking session of Zumba and fun at the sprawling campus of the University www.specialolympicsbharat.org 6 Report | #MeetTheDetermined Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 Abu Dhabi UAE Flame of Hope The Flame of Hope lighting ceremony of the Special Olympics World Games took place on 27 February at the Zappeion Palace in Athens, Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics. Special Olympics athletes were present at the ceremony alongside the dignitaries. The Flame of Hope then journeyed to Abu Dhabi, sfater having travelled through all the seven emirates and finally, finding its way to the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony of the World Games In line with Special Olympics tradition, members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics—the Guardians of the Flame—transported the Flame of Hope along the entire journey to Abu Dhabi Details www.specialolympicsbharat.org 7 Report | #MeetTheDetermined Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 Abu Dhabi UAE Opening Ceremony His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan announced the start of Special Olympics World Games 2019 at a spectacular Opening Ceremony at Zayed Sports City on Wednesday. The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE’s Armed Forces officially welcomed more than 7,500 athletes and 3,000 coaches, representing 200 nations, for seven days of incredible Olympic- style sports and a celebration of the human spirit. A number of widely acclaimed music stars and producers, including Grammy Award winner for The Greatest Showman Soundtrack, Music Producer, Greg Wells, and Honorary Executive Producer and 28- time Grammy Winner, Quincy Jones, came together to create the official song for Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019. The anthem, titled Right Where I’m Supposed To Be , was inaugurated at the Opening Ceremony of the World Games .Joining them on the stage in front of more than 40,000 fans at Zayed Sports City Stadium to sing the anthem were three Arabic music stars including Emirati singer and Good Will Ambassador at Large HE Hussain Al Jassmi, Syrian superstar Assala Nasri, and Star of Egypt and the Arab World, Tamer Hosny. SO Bharat participated in 14 sports including Unified Basketball, Unified Handball and Unified Football. With 96 medals , Powerlifting won the maximum number of medals Special Olympics celebrates all athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID), regardless of their level of ability. Special Olympics ensures good competition through a process called “Divisioning,” which segments athletes based on abilities. This way, athletes can compete with other athletes of similar abilities and age.
