BY T. B.WILLIAMS. TORONTO The Pooi.h Printing Co., Ltd. "895. • ! Entered according to Act of Parliament of Oanada, in * the year 1895, by T. B. Williams, at the Department ' Agriculture. ff INTRODUCTION. printers AMONG no subject ao much needs consider- ation as the Imposition of book forms, including I tariffs, folders, books of tables, ?nd lar^re and •mall pamphlets of every description. hi these days of projrress, when printers may have placed in their hands monthly issues of Journals of hlffh artistic merit devoted exclusively to the art of prating, it is not intended to criticise the merits of wlous modes of imposition, but rather to place before tlie reade/s such Hints on Imposition as may make this book a reliable guide to the workman in the often ardu- ous taak of imposing book forms. Thooe who have had considerable experience in the eompoabig room, in t o making up of pages, and imposing of forms for the press, if they have l>een studious. Iiave ooBduded that there is a mode of imposition which, if thoroughly understood, makes the matter of "sending a form to press" a pleasure, rather than the irksome duty it so often proves alike to the advanced printer and the novioe. Perhaps the chief cause of the unrest of an apprentice, When about to enter upon the art as a Journeyman, is that one of the first duties which will devolve upon him may b« the imposition of a form, and this anxiety may •coount to some extent for the hesitancy of many boys to rtep out into the world as journeymen printers, able to take care of themselves not only at the case as composi- tors, but at the stone. The quesUon of the ability of a printer to become proflctent in the artistic arrangement of types will not be dealt with, as It is regarded by the writer as occupying •n entirely separate province, not to be identified with the PUrpoee of this book. Although there are no "depart- mente, it is the ' design of the writer to present in a simple manner the best methods of "imposition," and "tocktog up" of book forms. Iv INTRODKCnOM. It it a fact that many printers who are highly pro- Anient in other branches of the traHe pertaining to the type room, and who have been in a composing room for many years where type and plate forms of almost endless variety have been prepared for the press, cannot with any degree of certainty lay out the pages of a form and place the correct margins in a folio. A "make-up" having a thorough knowledge of imposition is seldom seen at the stone with a sheet of paper in his hand, as the relation of the folded sheet to the type fonn is beforehand clearly defined in his mind. It is a pleasure to see the profloient workman laying the pages side by side without any help* save his knowledge of their relative positions, and placing ^n the margins with as little difficulty as though he were preparing a form for a treadle press. It is not the desire merely to present a method for the making up and imposition of iKwk forms, but to render this work more easy all the way through. Henoe not only is the manner of laying out the pages dealt with, but also that of folding the sheet ; the reason for so the form, and folding ; the relation of the sheet to type of the latter to the pressman and binder. It is not intended to endeavor to transform present methods of imposition, or the positions in which the printer now places his pages, hut to explain as accurately as possible to Journeyman and apprentice why they are so placed, and to give concise illustrations of the work in hand. The author has, therefore, pleasure in presenting to the craft, these directions, in the hope that they may serve to lighten the burdens which so many printers bear because pressrooms and binderies are to the compositor inacces- sible departments of the printing indiistry, although so closely allied. He trusts that as these results of years of study of the subject have often proved a light to him they will be found to repay the careful perusal and con- sideration of the reader.

Trinkle (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) Copyright 2004 by Devin Balkcom. All rights reserved. Abstract Origami, the human art of paper sculpture, is a fresh challenge for the field of robotic manipulation, and provides a concrete example for many difficult and gen- eral manipulation problems. This thesis will present some initial results, including the world’s first origami-folding robot, some new theorems about foldability, defi- nition of a simple class of origami for which I have designed a complete automatic planner, analysis of the kinematics of more complicated folds, and some observa- tions about the configuration spaces of compound spherical closed chains. Acknowledgments Thanks to my family, for everything. And thanks to everyone who has made the development of this thesis and life in Pittsburgh so great. Matt Mason. Wow! Feibel, Department of Anthropology, Douglass Campus, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ 08903-0270 ABSTRACT Environmental factors, particularly climatic fluctu- ations, are widely viewed as important controls on the path of evolution. The broad coincidence of two adaptive transitions in hominid evolution with major climatic milestones supports models in which these evolutionary shifts are climatically driven. In the first, the origin of the Hominidae is tied to the Messinian desiccation of the Mediterranean. A second, more convincing case, involves the origin of the genus Homo and the first appearance of stone-tool technology, which occur in broad contem- poreneity with the onset of Northern Hemisphere glacia- tion in the Pliocene. Detailed analysis, however, encoun- ters difficulties in tying large-scale forcing phenomena to the terrestrial evidence for hominid evolution, and in resolving the effects of interacting environmental factors. The influences of climate, tectonics, volcanism, and community evolution all act at varying scales, and are reflected in different ways in the geologic record. Current research is tying detailed studies from the African conti- nent to records of global change, and to better under- Figure 1. Using two-color paper Many origami models take advantage of using two-colored paper (one color per side), to get some more or less geo- metrical patterns using the color-changing technique. John Smith [1] considered the use of two-colored paper as an ex- tension of pure origami (a single square single-colored paper, no cut, no glue), but the inverse situation could also be considered! Among the flat-folded models, there is also the folding of letters and numerals.
