SKI-ING in AUSTRALIA by HERBERT H
best foreigner, Nykanen of Finland took 19th place. The willl)er of Class B was Rolf Kaarby and of the senior class Ole B. Andersen. Birger Ruud headed the list in the juniors, followed by Reidar Andersen and Ole Ulland. The ladies' cup which is always presented to the best jumper in the combined classes went to Sigmund Ruud. The Winter Sports Week was finished off on Monday, March 3, with the 50-kilometre race. Sven U Herstrom of Sweden duplicated his victory of 1929 at Holmenkollen by beating Arne Rustadstuen of Norway. His time was 3.53.14, just 53 precious seconds ahead of his rival, with A. Paananen and M. Lappalainen, both of Finland, 3rd and 4th respectively. The National Travel Association, with the co-operation of the Norwegian State Railways, invited a group of foreign delegates on a five days sight-seeing trip ending at Trondhjem, where the Norwegian Ski Championships were held the following week-end. Director G. B. Lampe was in charge and we returned . to Oslo the following Tuesday morning with many happy memories. I will forever be indebted to the officials of Norges Ski Forbund (The Norwegian Ski Association), Foreningen til Skiidrettens Fremme (The Association for the Promotion of Skiers), and Baerum Ski Club for their hospitality and valuable advice, and also to the official judges for their kind co-operation while I was studying ski jumping at the various competitions. I had barely a couple of weeks for private business and was unable to spend much time with my relatives, much to their disappointment. -

Are Norwegian Americans “Born with Skis?”
Are Norwegian Americans “Born with Skis?” Exploring the role of skiing in Norwegian American ethnic identity in the 1930s through the skiing adventures of Sigmund and Birger Ruud Kristoffer Moen Helgerud A master thesis presented to the Department for Literature, Area Studies and European Languages North American Area Studies Faculty of Humanities ENG4790 (Credits: 30) Supervisor: Associate Professor David C. Lovoll, has argued that ski jumping was an “ethnic forte” for Norwegian immigrants in the U.S. This thesis tests and interprets Lovoll’s statement by analyzing the experience of two Norwegian ski jumping brothers who toured the United States in the winter of 1937/1938. One of them, Birger Ruud, was the reigning world and Olympic champion at the time when they arrived in New York City. The other brother, Sigmund Ruud, traveled as the reigning U.S. champion. The thesis attempts to reconstruct the “Norwegian America” of the late 1930s, discusses the role of ski jumping as an ethnic activity for Norwegian Americans, and examines to what extent the Ruud brothers could be seen as ethnic heroes. -
PETITION: Sign the Petition to Say No to Hunting of Songbirds in Norway
CREATED BY: Norsk Ornitologisk Forening POWERED BY PRINTED ON: August 29, 2016 VIEW ONLINE: https://www.causes.com/actions/1784721 PETITION: Sign the Petition to Say no to hunting of songbirds in Norway! To: Say no to hunting of songbirds in Norway! BirdLife Norway are deeply worried about the slaughter of migratory birds in Europe. Many of the birds that lose their lives in southern Europe are Norwegian birds. And now the authorities in Norway are proposing to start hunting of both Song Thrushes and Blackbirds. BirdLife Norway has started a petition against this proposal, and the petition will be handed over to the authorities in August. Support our campaign by signing the petition! There are many reasons why such a hunting proposal must not become a reality, and there are no good grounds to start hunting of these species. These birds have little flesh, and one would need to kill at least four thrushes to provide one meal portion. There is little tradition for this type of hunting in Norway. Most people like to see Blackbirds, which are regular visitors to bird tables. Song Thrushes liven up spring evenings with their beautiful song. Why shoot birds with such fantastic intrinsic values, whose very presence fills us with joy? Hunting of two other thrush species, Redwing and Fieldfare, is currently permitted in Norway. BirdLife Norway are striving to have these removed from the list of quarry species. And now there are moves to hunt two new songbird species. This is a move in the wrong direction. Banning hunting of thrushes in Norway, would mean a ban on hunting of songbirds in the country. -

INTRODUCTION In 1671, Isaac Newton published his new theory of light and wrote about refraction: Then I began to suspect, whether the Rays, after their trajection through the Prisme, did not move in curve lines. And it increased my suspicion when I remembred that I had often seen a Tennis ball, struck with an oblique Racket, describe a curve line. (Newton 1671) One might be surprised by the unexpected use of the word tennis 1 more than two centuries before the official creation of the sport in England (1874). -

Ski Jumping – Talent Battle in a Learning Organization
Organizacija, Volume 46 Research papers Number 4, July-August 2013 doi: 10.2478/orga-2013-0014 Ski Jumping – Talent Battle in a Learning Organization Marko Ferjan1, Mitja Mežnar2, Eva Jereb1 1university of Maribor, Faculty of organizational sciences, kidričeva cesta 55a, 4000 kranj, slovenia, [email protected] (corresponding author), [email protected] 2ravne 29, 4290 tržič, slovenia, [email protected] the concepts of learning organization and organizational learning have made a significant contribution to the development of some major global companies such as nokia, oracle, Microsoft and others. this article explores whether the learning organization concept has proved successful in sports, specifically in ski jumping. the study was conducted among ski jump- ers who compete in the World cup. the questionnaire was distributed to 130 ski jumpers, and 54 correctly completed ques- tionnaires were returned. the study has indicated that ski jumping is a sport of distinct individualists. individual talent is an extremely important factor for success in this sport. We can say with absolute certainty that all surveyed ski jumpers are able to take 16th to 50th place in a World cup race. the differences between competitors are very minor, even in the biggest races. therefore, when it comes to success, every single detail matters. We have identified a weak correlation between the best sporting achievement and collaboration in the testing of new equipment. in the past, some of the best results were achieved on the basis of experimentation, but contemporary coaches do not dare to over-experiment with the technique. too frequent progress measurements place a burden on competitors.
