Seasonal distribution of moths of the Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in Ogongo, northern Namibia Grzegorz KOPIJ Department of Wildlife Management, University of Namibia, Katima Mulilio Campus, Private Bag 1096, Katima Mulilo, Namibia; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: During the years 2011–2013, moths were collected in Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in the Cuvelai Drainage System, Ovamboland, northern Namibia. In total, 77 species from 13 families have been identified. Their seasonal occurrence in this habitat was also investigated, with most species recorded in wet season between September and April, but with clear peak in February and March. The family Noctuidae was by far the most speciose (38 recorded species), followed by Crambidae (8 spp.), Sphingidae (6 spp.) and Arctiidae (4 spp.). All other families were represented by 1–3 species. For each species listed date of collection is given, and data on its global distribution. Key words: Lepidoptera, check-list, biodiversity, distribution, moths, Ovamboland INTRODUCTION According to recent quite precise estimate, there are 15 5181 species, 16 650 genera and 121 families of Lepidoptera worldwide (Pouge 2009). Lepidoptera fauna of Namibia has recently attracted attention of European entomologists. However, thorough surveys were conducted hitherto in a few areas only, such as Brandberg and Hobatere. The northern regions of the country were especially badly neglected. In southern Africa (south of Zambezi and Kunene Rivers) – 8 511 species, 2 368 genera and 89 families were recently catalogued (Vári et al. -

Received: 20 June 2019; Accepted: 12 July 2019; Published: 14 July 2019 Abstract: Lupins anthracnose is a destructive seed and airborne disease caused by Colletotrichum lupini, affecting stems and pods. Primary seed infections as low as 0.01–0.1% can cause very severe yield losses. One of the most effective management strategies is the development of a robust and sensitive seed detection assay to screen seed lots before planting. PCR-based detection systems exhibit higher levels of sensitivity than conventional techniques, but when applied to seed tests they require the extraction of PCR-quality DNA from target organisms in backgrounds of saprophytic organisms and inhibitory seed-derived compounds. To overcome these limitations, a new detection protocol for C. lupini based on a biological enrichment step followed by a PCR assay was developed. Several enrichment protocols were compared with Yeast Malt Broth amended with ampicillin, streptomycin, and lactic acid were the most efficient. -

The Eastern Arc Mountains (EAM) of Tanzania form an island-type archipelago of wet and cool rainforests widely separated by extremely hot and dry savannah. This paper reports novel phylogeographical analyses of the low-dispersing and forest-dependent Ty- poderus weevils in the Uluguru block of the EAM. One mitochondrial and two nuclear loci were used to infer phylogenetic relationships among 70 Typoderus specimens, 52 of them from 22 geographically diversifed Uluguru litter sifting samples. Various analyses consistently detected 11 geographically coherent Typoderus clades, six of them formed by the Uluguru specimens, where fve are taxonomically inter- preted as species: T. admetus sp.n., T. furcatus, T. peleus sp.n., T. polyphemus sp.n. and T. subfurcatus. Characterising plant pathogen communities and their environmental drivers at a national scale A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Lincoln University by Andreas Makiola Lincoln University, New Zealand 2019 General abstract Plant pathogens play a critical role for global food security, conservation of natural ecosystems and future resilience and sustainability of ecosystem services in general. Thus, it is crucial to understand the large-scale processes that shape plant pathogen communities. The recent drop in DNA sequencing costs offers, for the first time, the opportunity to study multiple plant pathogens simultaneously in their naturally occurring environment effectively at large scale. In this thesis, my aims were (1) to employ next-generation sequencing (NGS) based metabarcoding for the detection and identification of plant pathogens at the ecosystem scale in New Zealand, (2) to characterise plant pathogen communities, and (3) to determine the environmental drivers of these communities. First, I investigated the suitability of NGS for the detection, identification and quantification of plant pathogens using rust fungi as a model system. -
