Google has just announced the launch of a new comprehensive cloud service called Google Play, which will include the former Android Market, Google Music and Google Ebookstore. From what we've seen Google Play is similar to iTunes, since it's designed to be a central depository for all your media and apps. However, you'll be able to access Google Play content from any device. For example, you can read books on your tablet and switch to your smartphone at any time. You'll be able to watch streaming movies or download them locally to watch them offline. The same goes for music. Google calls Play a digital entertainment destination where you can find, enjoy and share your favorite music, movies, books and apps online and on your Android phone or tablet. In other words, Google Play should be a single media destination that gives you everyone access to your music, videos, e-books or apps, whether you're accessing them from your smartphone, tablet, laptop or smart TV. The Google Play Store gives you access to millions of apps and games you can download on your Android device. It also offers things like movies, books and music, although not all of them are available in every country. To use the Play Store, the first thing you need is a Google account - you won't be able to view or download content if you don't have it. You can set it up for free in a matter of minutes, as shown in the step-by-step tutorial below. How to set up a new Google account on your Android deviceOn the moment you log into your Google account on your Android device, you're ready to start exploring the exciting world of Android apps, games and various other content through the Play Store app. Although its use is not exactly rocket science, we have nevertheless prepared a short guide to the topic that explains a few basic things you should know. These include how to download content, add a payment method, redeem a gift card, and more. Go to the section: How to search and download content? Finding a box is the place to start if you already know what you are looking for. It can be either a specific app like Android Authority or a category like racing games. Just click search box top1, hang in search query2 and click the search button to see all the results3. The alternative is category search. Just click on on option1 while you're on the home screen of the Play Store and then choose what it's you're interested in2. The third option is to view the content directly from the app's home screen. That's where you'll find things like apps and games recommended for you based on your recent activities, new and updated apps, top-rated games, and more. This includes item description, app rating, screenshots, videos, and, of course, the Set button. Click on it2 and wait for the device to make it magic. Once you've finished, you'll be notified that the content has been uploaded to your device and can be used: click on the notification or Open2 button. Keep in mind that some items in the Play Store are free, while you will have to pay for others. You'll need to add a payment method to your Google account to buy content from the Play Store, which we'll see in the next section. Step-by-step instructions: Search for content through a search box, category, or home screen. Click on the item (game, app, movie...) you like to bring up more information. Click the Set button to upload content to your device. Click the Open or Notification button to access the downloaded content. How do I add a payment method? To buy an app, movie, game or any other piece of content through the Play Store, you must add a credit/debit card to your account. The process is simple and takes only a minute or two. The first step is to launch the Play Store app and open a burger menu. You can do this by clicking the menu icon in the search box1 from above or swiping straight to the left side of the display. Then select Payment Methods2 and click on the Add credit or debit card button - as shown in screenshot number 3 below. The final step is to follow the instructions on the screen by entering the necessary details. Step by step instructions: Run the Play Store app and open the burger menu from the side. Click on the Payment Methods button. Click on the Add credit or debit card button and follow the instructions on the screen. While this is not mandatory, it is a good idea to include an authentication option for purchases. This means that you will have to approve every purchase you make in the Play Store with a password or fingerprint. This is a security feature that will make sure you won't buy something by accident. To turn it on, open the side menu, click on Settings1, select The Purchase Authentication Requires2, and then select one of the options available3. Turning on the option fingerprints is also a good idea. Step by step instructions: Bring up the menu from the side and click on Settings. Click on the Required Authentication button for one of the options available. How do I update my apps and games? To try out the latest features that developers have added to their apps and games, you have to update them through the Play Store - although you can do so through your device's settings menu as well. To do this, run the Google Play Store app and raise the settings menu, either by clicking on the menu icon in the search1 box on top, or by swiping directly from the left side of the display.
