Shambhala Ebooks Shambhala eBooks In accordance with Shambhala Publications’ mission to provide books for enlightened living as effectively as possible to readers all over the globe, we are now offering digital editions of select titles available for purchase directly though our website. Each title is provided as a bundle of three downloadable files, compatible with popular eBook readers and software. As we embrace the digital marketplace, we continue to strive to bring you the highest quality products on an ever-growing range of subjects. Three File Formats The three file formats we offer are ePub, Mobi, and PDF. All three provide features unique to eBook formats, such as the ability to search, navigate, and copy text. ePub The ePub file format is a free and open eBook standard created by the International Digital Publishing Forum. This format is used by Apple, Google, and other software and hardware developers. ePub files are compatible with Nook, Kobo, and Sony Reader, as well as the iPad and iPhone. With the proper apps or software, they can also be used on Android phones, Windows phones, and your computer. Mobi The Mobi file format is used with Amazon Kindle readers. You can also download free Kindle reading apps at Amazon.com for use on most smart phones, computers, or tablets. PDF The Adobe PDF format is a widely-used standard for fixed-layout documents. You can access PDF files via any operating system through various hardware and software programs. All popular eReaders and smart phones support the PDF format. Most computers have a program pre-installed that will open PDFs, or you can open them in a variety of downloadable reading apps. FAQ How do I transfer the file to my eReader (Kindle, Kobo, Nook, etc.) from my computer? The process is slightly different depending on the type of eReader you are using. In almost all cases, you will need to first download the file to your computer, connect your device to your computer using a USB cord, and drag the file to a folder in your device. Amazon also offers the “Send to Kindle” service so that you can email mobi or PDF files directly to your Kindle or Kindle app. Can I read Shambhala eBooks on my computer? Yes. Almost all computers have a default program to open PDF files. To view Mobi files, you can download a free version of the Kindle app for Mac or PC, available through Amazon. To view ePub files, you can download a free version of Adobe Digital Editions through Adobe. How do I put my eBook files on my iPad or iPhone or android device? First, please be aware that your iPad, iPhone or android device will need to have an eReader app installed. You can get the Kindle reading app, Google Play Books, iBooks, or a number of other free applications through your app store. *Note: The iBooks app is only available for iOS systems (iPads and iPhones). iOS & iBooks To transfer a file to your iOS device (iPad or iPhone), Download the ePub file to your computer, open iTunes and click "File, Open", and select the ePub file. When you go to your Books section in iTunes you will see it there. When you connect your iOS device, make sure the book you just added is checked to be included when syncing (you can also check a box that says always sync all books). Sync your device and it will copy the book to your device. Kindle Apps If you’re using a Kindle app, you will have a Send-to-Kindle email address ending in kindle.com (it's usually [email protected], and it can be found at the Manage your Devices page at Manage your Kindle when you are logged into your Amazon account). The various ways to send a mobi file to your Kindle or Kindle app can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle Google Play Books Google accounts automatically sync all your devices, so this option can be the easiest if you use Gmail and other Google apps. After downloading the ePub file to your computer, log in to your Google account and go to Google Play. Select “Books,” then “My Books” on the left, and then “Upload files” on the right. Locate the file on your computer and upload it. The book will automatically be copied to your Google Play Books application on your device. Can I open eBooks directly from my iOS device? Yes, you can do all this from your iPad or iPhone if you’d prefer. You will purchase the eBook at www.shambhala.com and then you should be able to simply click on the download link for the ePub file and select "Open in iBooks." .

  • On the Interoperability of Ebook Formats
It is widely seen as a serious problem that European as well as international customers who have bought an ebook from one of the international ebook retailers implicitly subscribe to this retailer as their sole future ebook On the Interoperability supplier, i.e. in effect, they forego buying future ebooks from any other supplier. This is a threat to the qualified European book distribution infrastructure and hence the European book culture, since subscribers to one of these of eBook Formats ebook ecosystems cannot buy future ebooks from privately owned community-located bricks & mortar booksellers engaging in ebook retailing. This view is completely in line with the Digital Agenda of the European Commission calling in Pillar II for “an effective interoperability Prof. Christoph Bläsi between IT products and services to build a truly digital society. Europe must ensure that new IT devices, applications, data repositories and services interact seamlessly anywhere – just like the Internet.” Prof. Franz Rothlauf This report was commissioned from Johannes Gutenberg University Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz – Germany Mainz by the European and International Booksellers Federation. EIBF is very grateful to its sponsors, namely the Booksellers Association of Denmark, the Booksellers Association of the Netherlands and the Booksellers Association of the UK & Ireland, whose financial contribution made this project possible.
