What is an ePub? ePub is short for electronic publication. It is a standardized way of publishing e-books so the same file can be opened on any computer or device, including Macintosh or Windows computers, and tablets including iPads.
By creating an ePub file, Dr. Schneller is able to ensure that the one file he creates will be viewable on just about any electronic device you feel comfortable using.
How do I view an ePub e-book?
On a Macintosh computer with MacOS 10.9 or newer? MacOS 10.9 or newer: The iBooks application comes standard on a computer with MacOS version 10.9 or newer. To access the ePub, do the following:
1. Download the ePub. Open your web browser (Safari) and go to http://bit.ly/2080epub to download the ePub file. The filename that downloads will be chem2080.epub, and the file will likely be in the “Downloads” folder (or it may open automatically). 2. Open the ePub file. Double-click on the downloaded chem2080.epub file. It will open in iBooks, and the book will automatically be added to your iBooks library. Next time, just open the iBooks app to access the ePub and continue where you left off. iBooks allows users to highlight relevant parts of the ePub, double-click on a word to view its dictionary definition, create bookmarks, take notes that can be referenced later, interact through social sites, or speak the text.
On a Windows PC, and MacOS 10.8 or earlier? Use the following link to install Adobe Digital Editions: http://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital- editions/download.html. Then,
1. Download the ePub. Open your web browser and go to http://bit.ly/2080epub to download the ePub file. The filename that downloads will be chem2080.epub, and the file will likely be in the “Downloads” folder. 2. Open ePub in Adobe Digital Editions. Windows users: Double-click on the chem2080.epub file you downloaded in step 1. The file will open in Adobe Digital Editions. Macintosh users: Open Adobe Digital Editions, then choose “File” > “Add to Library”, and browse for the downloaded ePub file. Next time, just open the Adobe Digital Editions application to access the ePub and continue where you left off.

On an Apple iPad or Apple iPhone? 1. Use Safari on your iPad to browse to the ePub URL: http://bit.ly/2080epub. 2. When prompted in Safari, choose to open the ePub in the iBooks app. The iBooks app is available for free in the App Store. Twitter or other apps. iOS users can tap on the figures to view them enlarged. Selecting a word in iBooks will let you look up the definition, or have the selection read to you by Siri.
On a computer that is not mine? You may have a need to open the ePub on a computer that is not yours. For example, you may be using a campus computer lab, a computer in the library, or you are using another computer that does not allow you to install software. In that case, you can view the ePub within the web browser using Google Play Books by completing the following steps: 1. Download the ePub. The first time you access the ePub go to http://bit.ly/2080epub to download the ePub file. The filename that downloads will be chem2080.epub. 2. Add the ePub to Google Play Books. Go to https://play.google.com/books, and login with a Google/Gmail account. Click “Upload files”, and browse and select the ePub file downloaded in step 1. You will not need to repeat this step on future logins. To access the ePub again, login to the Google Play Books website, and the ePub will be available to continue where you left off.
The Google Play Books website allows highlighting relevant parts of the ePub, annotating the book for future reference, searching Google or Wikipedia for selected words, and viewing the definition of selected words.
On an Android tablet or Android smartphone? For Android devices, such as Samsung Galaxy, use the Google Play Books app to view ePub files on an Android tablet or Android smartphone. Figures and Videos Throughout the ePub, figures and videos are used to welcome the reader, detail definitions, enhance a concept, or delve deeper into an explanation.
Viewing Figures in More Detail Increasing the text size also increases the size of the figure to view more detail. Viewing the ePub in a full-screen view will maximize the figure’s size. On iOS devices, the iBooks app allows the user to double-tap the figure and pinch-to- zoom to view it in more detail. On an Android device, long-press the figure and pinch-to-zoom to view it in more detail.
Viewing Videos (give them time to load) Videos are played using YouTube links. To view the video, click or tap on the link that appears in the text. The link will open in YouTube and allow you to view the video as you would any other video on the Internet. Once the video is completed, you must return to the ePub to continue reading.
