It’s the tree that says, “tropics.” But there’s so much more to the coconut palm. Its fruit, the niu or coconut, is so useful that early Polynesians brought it along to sustain themselves when they sailed across the Pacific to Hawai‘i. Polynesians knew that when they settled on new islands, they could plant coconuts and make use of the entire tree that grew—not only the coconut meat and water, but also the leaves, the wood, the fiber, and every other part. According to the book Canoe Plants of Ancient Hawaii, “Besides drink, food and shade, niu offers the possibilities of housing, thatching, hats, baskets, furniture, mats, cordage, clothing, charcoal, brooms, fans, ornaments, musical instruments, shampoo, containers, implements and oil for fuel, light, ointments, soap and more.” The only palm tree that’s native to Hawai‘i is the loulu (Pritchardia). There are perhaps 19 loulu species in Hawai‘i and a few related species in Tahiti and Fiji. Hawai‘i used to have large loulu forests, but while some loulu still survive in the wild, many disappeared because of rats, pigs, goats, and even people. Within the genus Pritchardia, there are 25 species of palms native to the tropical Pacific Islands. In Hawai‘i, as many as 19 species of Pritchardia are endemic, and some of them are categorized as endangered, rare, or vulnerable. -

We propose a method for seed shape quantification based on the comparison of the bi-dimensional images of the seeds with geometric figures. J index is the percent of similarity of a seed image with a figure taken as a model. Models in shape quantification include geometrical figures (circle, ellipse, oval ::: ) and their derivatives, as well as other figures obtained as geometric representations of algebraic equations. 1 INTRODUCTION Growth Habit
Tropical Palms 1 1 INTRODUCTION Palms are monocots, included in the section of Angiosperms characterized by bearing a single seed leaf. Scientifically, palms are classified as belonging to the family Palmae (the alternative name is Arecaceae), are perennial and distinguished by having woody stems. According to Dransfield1 et al (2008), the palm family consists of five subfamilies, each representing a major line of evolution. The Calamoideae is the subfamily with the most unspecialized characters. It is followed by the, Nypoideae, Coryphoideae, Ceroxyloideae and Arecoideae; subfamilies; the last exhibiting the greatest number of specialized characters. The foregoing names are based on the genus originally thought to be most characteristic of each subfamily, all of which have species of economic importance. These are: the rattan palm (Calamus), nipa palm (Nypa), talipot palm (Corypha), Andean wax palm (Ceroxylon) and betel nut palm (Areca). About 183 palm genera are currently recognized. The number of palm species is much less precise because of conflicting concepts by palm taxonomists as to what constitutes a distinct species, and the need to revise a number of genera. According to Govaerts and Dransfield (2005), incorporating on-line updates (www.kew.org/monocotchecklist/) there are about 2,450 palm species. Natural history information on the palm family can be found in Corner (1966). Palm anatomy and structural biology have been the subjects of studies by Tomlinson (1961; 1990). Palm horticulture is treated in detail by Broschat and Meerow (2000). Illustrated books which provide general information on the more common palms of the world include McCurrach (1960), Langlois (1976), Blombery and Rodd (1982), Lötschert (1985), Del Cañizo (1991), Stewart (1994), Jones (1995), Riffle and Craft (2003) and Squire (2007). -

A New Species of Pritchardia

ROCK (WITH PLATE 21 AND ONE TEXT FIGURE) The genus of palms, Pritchardia, is represented in the Hawaiian Islands by eleven species, including the new species treated in this paper. Originally, there were only two species known from these islands, Pritchardia Gaudichaudii Wend!. and Pritchardia Martii Wend!. For several years I have carried on, on all the islands of this group, thorough botanical explorations; these have brought to light several new species of Pritchardia, most of which have been described by O. Beccari. Kauai has furnished two species; P. minor and P. eriophora; Maui, one species, P. arecina; Oahu, one species, P. Rockiana; and Hawaii, two species, P. eriostachya and P. Beccariana, the last (which is the handsomest of all) being here described for the first time. Beccari had described pre viously P. Hillebrandii from Molokai, P. lanigera from the Kohala Mountains, on Hawaii, and P. remota from Bird Island (Moku Manu), northwest of Kauai.· During a sojourn at the Volcano of Kilauea with my friend, M. L. Copeland, whom I take this opportunity to thank for his kind assistance, we discovered this handsome species in the humid forests of Glenwood. I was at once struck by the extraordinary size of this palm, its peculiar inflorescence and large globose fruits. We felled one tree and thus obtained complete specimens, some of which I forwarded to my friend, Dr. Q. Beccari, with whom I had had long and interesting discussions of our Hawaiian palms while in Florence less than two years ago. -
