Martin Adam, Ph.D. Annotation The purpose of this thesis is an analysis of a corpus comprising of opening sentences of articles collected from the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia. Four different quality categories from Wikipedia were chosen, from the total amount of eight, to ensure gathering of a representative sample, for each category there are fifty sentences, the total amount of the sentences altogether is, therefore, two hundred. The sentences will be analysed according to the Firabsian theory of functional sentence perspective in order to discriminate differences both between the quality categories and also within the categories. -

Commissioner’s message In 2005, several themes underpinning the diversity of the Police, Fire and Emergency Services came to the fore and had a significant impact on our collective work effort. I am referring to events involving natural disasters, terrorism, substance abuse and personal violence. From the outset, the Tri-Service offered support to the recovery effort following the tragic Asian Tsunami and it was not long before a handful of members were In this issue on the ground in Thailand assisting with disaster victim identification. L Western Australian Bird Notes Quarterly Newsletter of Birds Australia - WA Group (a division of Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union) I 1 I WATERBIRD SURVEY OF MANDORA MARSH I I 1 i - I On the 4th and 5th of May 1999 I accompanied Gordon Graham and Tim Willing from CALM on a survey and investigation of a flooded area to the north east of Sandfire Roadhouse. The aim of the trip was to ascertain waterbird usage and assess the site for survey work later in the year. Local reports were that the area was the wettest it had been for many years and this also prompted the survey. I also took the opportunity to undertake some comprehensive bird atlas survey work. Upon our arrival a narrow band of shallow water was still flowing across the highway north of the Sandfire Roadhouse. Two or three weeks previously an approximately 2 kilometre stretch of the highway had shallow water over it. Our first telescope views and binocular search of the flooded samphire to the west of the Highway revealed 390 Egrets -Great 350, Intermediate 20 and Little 20. Many hundreds of Straw-necked Ibis were feeding and small The Red-backed Fairy-wren is a bird of the numbers of Australasian Grebes and Grey Teal were using grassland of northern Australia. Western Australian Bird Notes ONE-FOOTED RED-NECKED PHALAROPE AT JUNCTION POOL, BROOME 'L-- A On 17 December 1998 while checking a small scrape situated on the edge of the Dampier Creek Saltmarsh, I noticed a phalarope swimming about in the shallow water feeding actively. On closer inspection with a telescope it became obvious that this bird was a Red-necked Phalarope. A few other wader species were also present at the pool including two Greenshanks, one Marsh Sandpiper and four Red-necked Stints, all in non-breeding plumage, and two pairs of Red-capped Plovers in full breeding plumage. I used the Red-necked Stints to make a comparison on general size and bill length. The phalarope's bill, although the same colour as the stint's (black), was a completely different shape, coming- to a fine uoint. almost needle-like (like a Marsh Sandpiper) and also longer and straight. The Red-necked Phalarope phalarope was also slightly larger than the Red-necked Photos by George Swann Stint, and showed the classic phalarope mark behind the eye brOadeNngand cuMng downwards towards the neck mantle to the upper pan of the breast.
