Session 49 CHAPTER 17 Revelation 17:7 God's Angel Notices That John Is Astonished and Maybe Even Confused. So, This Revelation Session 49 CHAPTER 17 Revelation 17:7 ➢ God’s angel notices that John is astonished and maybe even confused. ➢ So, this angel explains these things to John ➢ The remining verses in chapter 17 are about this mystery beast and the identity of the woman. Revelation 17:8 ➢ The beast exists prior to Johns lifetime. (once was) ➢ Did not exist when John saw this revelation (now is not) ➢ But will reappear at some specified time in the future. ➢ This beast will have satanic ties and will come out of the abyss ➢ He will eventually go to his destruction since God will cast him into the “lake of fire”. Revelation ➢ He will take his followers (the inhabitants of the earth whose names are not written in the “lamb’s book of life” with him. ➢ When the 5th trumpet sounds, Satan will open the bottomless pit and release the demonic spirits being held there. ➢ Now imagine this----we think the world is bad now----imagine what it will be like when the demonic spirits (which have been kept at bay in the bottomless pit) are released? Revelation 17:9 ➢ This verse gets a little tricky when it comes to interpretation. Its not meant to be tricky or confusing---it just requires a spiritual lens rather than a geographical lens. ➢ The seven heads on this beast are seven mountains on which the woman sits. ➢ Revelation 17:10 tells us these are not actual mountains, but are 7 kings or kingdoms (world governments) ➢ So, there are three possibilities here--- 1). A religious system or city that sits on 7 mountains or 2). Seven kings or 3). Both, ➢ The Bible tells us that mountains are a symbol of kingdoms. ➢ Therefore, the mountains must be 7 kingdoms / governments ➢ Some still say that the “seven mountains” is a reference to Rome-- - the city on 7 hills. If they are correct, then Rome would be the only city that the prostitute would control and be propped up by. Revelation 17:10 ➢ The word “kings” can also be translated “kingdoms”. Revelation ➢ History and scripture have revealed there have been 7 Gentile world kingdoms. ➢ The five that have fallen are the Gentile kingdoms – Assyrian, Medo-Persian, Greek, Egyptian, and Babylonian. ➢ “One is” refers to the sixth kingdom –Roman that existed in Johns lifetime ➢ “the other has not yet come” – refers to 7th future kingdom (the revised roman empire) which will exist after Johns lifetime. ➢ The 7th kingdom will remain for a short time (for the duration of the Tribulation period). ➢ Also, these kingdoms have been dominated by the false occultic religion of Babylon ➢ The 7th kingdom will last for 7 years (the length of the tribulation period). Revelation 17:11 ➢ This describes the beast that “was and was not”---the Antichrist ➢ He is the 8th kingdom / king ➢ He is NOT one of the 7 already mentioned. ➢ He will come out of the 7th kingdom mentioned ( which would be the revived Roman empire) -----now there is some real debate about this. That could include any country that was formed out of the European empire, it could be just the New Roman empire (which would Europe / Rome only) or it could mean this Antichrist could come from a one world religion instituted through the New Roman Empire. ➢ Which ever it is, this King/kingdom will establish a Gentile world kingdom and government. The Antichrist will rise in this new Revelation government, take it over and then transform it into a satanic state. ➢ The Beast that was and is not – is the beast that will come out of the bottomless pit ---the Antichrist. Revelation 17:12 ➢ These 10 horns are ten kings that will rule with the Antichrist. ➢ This scripture presents a picture of what the end-time world government will be like. ➢ The Anti-Christ will rule the world, which will be divided into ten divisions. ➢ In charge of each division will separate leaders who will answer to the Anti-Christ. ➢ Each one of these kings will receive authority for one hour. (One- hour is a Biblical term that means “for a short time”. ➢ In this case, “a short time” means that these kings will reign with the Anti-Christ during the tribulation period. ➢ Look back at Revelation 3:10 – What does this verse mean to you? Revelation 17:13 ➢ These 10 kings will be “puppet kings” who submit to the Antichrist ➢ What do you know about “dictators”? What means do they use to come into power? ➢ Violence, force, political trickery ➢ These dictators must maintain force to stay in power. Revelation ➢ Dictators usually outlaw basic freedoms such as freedom to worship, freedom of assembly, freedom of speech. ➢ According to the book of Revelation, the Antichrist will do these things as well but on a much greater scale. ➢ Question: Why do dictators outlaw basic freedoms? Revelation 17:14 ➢ At the end of the tribulation period, the Antichrist and his ten puppets will make war with the Lamb (who is the Lamb?). ➢ War will be with the Lamb and his faithful followers (His chosen) ➢ The Lamb will defeat these kings in the Battle of Armageddon because he is the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings. Revelation 17:15 ➢ This scripture tells us that the “Harlot” will sit upon (which means have the support of) people and nations from across the world. This religious system will have tremendous power ( Think back to the One World Religious System idea). Revelation 17:16 ➢ Have you ever noticed how dictators get approval and buy in from people before they wind up completely doing away with them? ➢ Here in verse 16, during the first half of the tribulation, The Antichrist will be submissive to this one world religious system and to the city (Babylon) where the one world government is located. Revelation ➢ John tells us it will not stay this way----the 10 puppet kings under the command of the Antichrist, will rise at the midpoint of the tribulation period. ➢ The Antichrist will enter the Jewish temple in Jerusalem and declare himself to be god. There will be no more room for the one world religion and the city of Babylon (center of the one world government). ➢ The Antichrist and his puppets will destroy the harlot’s religious system. They will confiscate her wealth and will persecute and kill her deceived people. Nothing will remain of this religious system when the Antichrist takes her down. Revelation 17:17 ➢ This is an interesting verse that what the Antichrist does not realize is that he is really the puppet here. ➢ God will put into the minds of the 10 puppet kings the destruction of this false religious system----destruction of the harlot religious system is why God agrees to give them power to start with. ➢ They will be instruments to fulfill the very purpose of God and His WORD. Revelation 17:18 ➢ This last verse of chapter 17 identifies a woman (which is a city) but it does not tell us what that city’s name is. ➢ It does say this city is a powerful city reigning over the kings of the earth. ➢ There is a great deal of disagreement about this verse. Many want it to have a spiritual meaning and not a literal meaning. ➢ John, however, has referred to Babylon as that literal city in Revelation 14:8, 18;10,16,18&19. Revelation ➢ It would not make much sense for John to stray away from that literal interpretation to bring in a spiritual city. ➢ John also names other cities within the book of Revelation. ➢ Isaiah prophecy (that a literal city like Sodom and Gomorrah) will be destroyed (Isaiah 13:19-20) ➢ Some say the great city of Babylon (prior to the tribulation and throughout the cities existence in the Tribulation) will possibly house the United Nations (moved from New York to the end time location). .

A Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand: These 144,000 were identified as a group of Jewish believers in Rev. 7 who minister (preach the gospel) during the great tribulation and are given a seal of protection throughout that period. b. Standing on Mount Zion: They gathered on Mount Zion because Zion – is the ancient name for the hills that make up Jerusalem – it is the place where the Messiah gathers His redeemed and reigns over the earth (Psalm 48, Isaiah 24:23, Joel 2:32, Obadiah 17 and 21, Micah 4:1, 4:7). Standing on Mount Zion with the Lamb shows that they emerge victorious from the great tribulation and are triumphant over the beast, worshipping, and standing firm with Jesus. i. Revelation 17-18 Sermon Discussion Questions 1. What thoughts, questions, or feelings do you have after listening to the sermon or reading the passage? 2. In chapters 17-18, the fall of “BaBylon” is depicted, as well as the ways of the “Prostitute”. These two images, along with the Beast and the Dragon are ways of descriBing forces of evil in the world. Along with the Biblical view of the “flesh” (Gal 5:13), evil is something that we all experience in us and the world around us. Do you think that most New Yorkers Believe that evil exists? What are some of the common ways that Non-Christians explain evil? What are some of the common ways that Non-Christians attempt to overcome evil? Do you find any of these explanations or approaches compelling? 3. Revelation 18:4-8 is warning the people to come out of BaBylon, which in this case is the ways of the world/Rome that is opposed to the Way of Jesus (the LamB). Read Matthew 7:13 out loud (you can choose one reader). How does the message of Revelation match with what Jesus says in Matthew 7:13? 4. Andy Stanley says that direction – not intention – determines destination in his book The Principle of the Path. Do you find this statement to be true? In what ways can peoples’ intentions Be different than their actual direction? 5. Drew mentioned that most of us judge ourselves By our intentions But we judge others based on their behaviors. • The Rapture and the Book of Revelation
TMSJ 13/2 (Fall 2002) 215-239 THE RAPTURE AND THE BOOK OF REVELATION Keith H. Essex Assistant Professor of Bible Exposition The relevance of the book of Revelation to the issue of the timing of the rapture is unquestioned. Assumptions common to many who participate in discussing the issue include the authorship of the book by John the apostle, the date of its writing in the last decade of the first century A.D., and the book’s prophetic nature in continuation of OT prophecies related to national Israel. Ten proposed references to the rapture in Revelation include Rev 3:10-11; 4:1-2; 4:4 and 5:9-10; 6:2; 7:9-17; 11:3-12; 11:15-19; 12:5; 14:14-16; and 20:4. An evaluation of these ten leads to Rev 3:10-11 as the only passage in Revelation to speak of the rapture. Rightly understood, that passage implicitly supports a pretribulational rapture of the church. That understanding of the passage fits well into the context of the message to the church at Philadelphia. * * * * * “As the major book of prophecy in the NT, Revelation has great pertinence to discussion of the rapture.”1 Participants in the discussion concerning the timing of the rapture would concur with this statement. Proponents of a pretribulational, midtribulational, pre-wrath, and posttribulational rapture all seek support for their positions in the book of Revelation.2 Many suggestions as to where Revelation 1Robert H. Gundry, The Church and the Tribulation (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1973) 64. 2Many books dealing with the rapture include sections specifically discussing the book of Revelation.

  • “Use It Or Lose It!” (Revelation 17-18)
“Use It or Lose It!” (Revelation 17-18) The old saying is true: “Use it or lose it.” This past Friday evening, I played in a church-sponsored basketball game designed to raise money for our summer missions’ trip to Honduras. There was only one problem: Eleven years ago when I failed to be drafted into the NBA, I decided to hang up my sneakers. I have played very little full-court basketball since. Needless to say, I was not able to match my glory-days of old. The expression, “Use it or lose it” rang in my ears as I struggled to run up and down the court. The expression, “Use it or lose it” also applies to other areas of life. The best-built house, if it is unoccupied for too long, will begin to fall to pieces. A house was meant to be lived in. A vehicle that sits idle and is rarely driven tends to have more mechanical problems than one that receives regular use. Cars and trucks were made to be driven. Those of you who learned a foreign language in high school or college know that if you don’t continue to use that language, you will lose it. 1 “Use it or lose it” is true spiritually as well. We must use what God has given us. If we don’t, we run the real risk of losing our productivity as disciples. Our effectiveness in life is dependent on the proper use of God’s blessings. Neglecting what we’ve been given or squandering God’s provisions places us in dangerous territory.

  • “Is the Woman of Revelation 17 the Same Woman of Revelation 12?”
The American Journal of Biblical Theology Volume 17(48). November 27, 2016 Davidson Razafiarivony, Ph.D. “Is the Woman of Revelation 17 the Same Woman of Revelation 12?” Recently, Revelation 17:6, “I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement,”1 has been interpreted to mean that this woman of Revelation 17:6 is the same woman of Revelation 12.2 Indeed, woman in the Bible represents church (Isa 54:5; 2 Cor 11:2; Gal 4:26; Eph 5:25-27). It is a “community of faith.”3 “A virtuous woman represents a pure church, a vile woman an apostate church.”4According to OT biblical passages (Ezek 16; Isa 57:8; Jer 31:4-5; Hos 1-3), God’s people, following apostasy, can eventually become an adulteress.5 In this line of thought, “Revelation 17 indicates that this woman who was once the true church of God [Rev 12] will, during end-time events, have a very negative role. She will eventually turn from her faithfulness to oppose God and his true people.”6 Fred A. Wilson provides the reason for that turning, alleging that the woman failed her test and temptations in the wilderness, and became the woman of Revelation 17.7 The view that the two women are the same is based on various grounds. First, John was amazed with a great amazement upon seeing the woman in Revelation 17:6 because she was familiar to him, that is, the woman he saw previously in Revelation 12.

Revelation 17 & 18 Revelation 17: In this chapter of Revelation, John draws our attention to a city, the “great harlot” also known as Babylon the Great! • Descriptions of the “great harlot” are: the mother of harlots-“harlotry is the standing symbol in the word of God for a debauched or perverted worship, idolatry, and false devotion.” She is the influence of fornications, clothed in purple scarlet, gold, precious stoned and pearls. She holds a golden cup full of abominations and filthiness and is drunk with the blood of the saints and martyrs of God. From that rebellion came the mysteries of idolatry, and every heathen system in the world. • From Babylon a mysterious religion spread to all the surrounding nations as the years went on, and the world was populated by the sons of Noah.

  • In Revelation 11,18 – Who Are They?
The “Destroyers of the Earth” in Revelation 11,18 – Who are they? Eliezer González Abstract Revelation 11,18 is a verse that is commonly cited specifically in connection with caring for the earth and its natural resources. This paper will argue that in its appropriate context, the destruction of the earth to which Rev 11,18 refers is not the degradation of the natural environment of the earth. Rather, it refers to the outpouring of the seven plagues, for which ultimate responsibility, although it is God’s action, is attributed to the nations under the leadership of the beast. It is therefore exegetically inappropriate to use Rev 11,18 as a de-contextualized proof- text to urge environmental responsibility. Palabras clave Apocalipsis – Dos testigos – Ecología – Medio ambiente – Plagas – Destrucción – Exégesis Introduction Revelation 11,18 is a verse that has been popularly used in some interesting contexts that were probably not in mind when the words were written.
