General Characteristics of the District Udhampur is the 5th largest Distt. of the J & K state and is situated in the southern part of the state. It is bound by Anantnag in the north, northeast by Doda, southeast by Kathua and southwest by Jammu. It has four tehsils viz. Udhampur, Ramnagar, Chenani and Gool Gulabgarh. Adminstrative headquarters are in Udhampur at a di stance of 66 k ms from Jammu on the National highway.Its Altitude varies from 600 to 3000 meters. The temperature rises to 42 degrees in summers and dips to 1.5 degrees in winters. Most of the rainfall takes place in July, August and September. Udhampur also serves as the headquarters of Northern command of Army 1.1 Location & Geographical Area. Udhampur district covers the 2380 Sq Kms area. Udhampur district is bounded by the districts of Rajouri in the west side, Kathua in the south-east side,Jammu in the south-west side, Anantnag in the north side and Doda in the north-east side. The Chenab, Ans, Tawi and U jh are the main rivers of the dictricts. The district is located between Latitude of 32° 34' to39° 30'North Longitude of 74° 16'to75°38' East . 1.2 Topography Topography: Udhampur is the fifth largest district of J&K and is situated at an altitude of 2,134 ft. above sea level. It is located at a di stance of 66 km. from Jammu on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The district is bounded by Rajouri in the west, Jammu in the south-west, Doda in the east and Kathua in the south-east. It also shares boundary with Anantnag in the North. 2 1.3 Availability of Minerals. Coal, bauxite, magnetite and lime stone deposits are found in janglegali- Sukhalgati areas, palegozoic/China clay are found in lain Thakkar Sui areas etc. PRODUCTION OF MINERAL 2010-11 S.NO. The total forest area of the district has been increased from 42.75% to 51.49% Over last ten years. The total forest area of the district in 2000-2001 is about 2,343 Sq. Kms as compared to 1945 Sq. Kms in 1990-1991. The main species of timber available are Deodar, Kail, Fir, Chir at higher altitude and Santha, Kher and other thorny bushes in the lower slopes. The major out-turn of forest are Timber, Firewood, resin, Anardana, Guchhian (a kind of Mushroom), Banafasha (a wild Flower used in Medicines), Dhoop, Kathas etc. 3 1.5 Administrative set up. The district has 7 blocks which are further divided in to 204 Gram Panchyayts The total village in the districts are 357 , out of which 4 are in habited. For the ethnic minorities, especially for the transhumant and migratory people land and forest are the source of life. The present paper is an attempt to examine the spatial distribution and demographic characteristic of Gujjars and Bakarwals with special focus on their population and settlement in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir State of India. To identify the Gujjars settlements in the Rajouri and Poonch district. The socio and economic backwardness of the Gujjars and Bakarwals is a function of rugged topography, hilly terrain, prejudices, orthodoxy, illiteracy and the traditional mode of life. There is a conspicuous shift from transhumance to agricultural and non-agricultural sectors among the Gujjars and Bakarwals. Key Words: Tribal Population, Gujjars, Bakarwals, Backwardness, rugged topography, hilly terrain, prejudices, orthodoxy.
