Regional Digest of Statistics 2016-17 (RIYAZ AHMAD BANDAY) FOREWORD The Directorate of Economics & Statistics, J&K is a designated nodal agency for coordinating collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of data and integrated development of statistical system of the state. The data is presented in the shape of various publications by the Directorate of Economics & Statistics and its agencies on regular basis. Joint Directorate of Evaluation & Statistics, Jammu among other activities is also charged with the responsibility of collecting, compiling, analysis and dissemination of data in the shape of publication titled” Regional Digest of Statistics” in respect of Jammu Division. This publication provides statistical profile and socio-economic scenario of various sectors of Jammu region. The present issue of Regional Digest of Statistics pertains to the year 2016-17 and is 18th in the series. I place on record my appreciation for the co-operation extended by various departments/organisations for providing the requisite information to the Regional Joint Director, Evaluation & Statistics, Jammu in time. It is hoped that current edition of the said publication like its previous issues will prove a useful tool to the planners & Policy makers, Research scholars, Administrators, students and other data users. The efforts put in by the Regional Joint Director, Evaluation and Statistics, Jammu and the staff associated, in bringing out this quality publication with updated statistical information in a time bound manner are highly acknowledged. This publication highlights the salient feature of Jammu Division in figures. I hope this publication will serve as an important tool for the researchers, planners, students and all other users in their respective fields. (Hemant Kumar Sharma) IAS PREFACE I am pleased to inform that the Publication of “Regional Digest of Statistics” of Jammu Division, is an annual affair and since its first print out it has become the spring of authentic statistical data regarding the different sectors of a Jammu’s economy. Today’s print out is the 18th in the series and every effort has been made to present the latest available information on various sectors of an economy at divisional level. The present information regarding the divisional level is bifurcated into 32 chapters, thus touching almost all the sectors of an economy. I am highly hopeful that the present publication will be of immense value to the research Scholars, data users in general and policy makers in particular, I firmly believe that the road to improvement is never ending. I shall look forward to and gratefully acknowledge all suggestions received for further improvement of this publication. At last but not least, I would like to congratulate and acknowledge the hard work put forth by Sh. The Bakkarwals are primarily nomads who move from plains to the higher altitudes with their flock as part of their annual season journeys with their livestock. The literacy rate among the Bakkarwal community is quite low in comparison to other 12 ST communities in the state. The present paper focuses on the status of education among the nomadic Bakkarwal children in Kakalote block of border district of Rajouri. The study aims to explore the reasons behind educational backwardness among Bakkarwal tribes, if any. Besides it also seeks to find out the measures taken by the Jammu and Kashmir government to provide education to nomads/Bakkarwal tribes.
