  • Better Than Radiohead What Makes Everything Worthwhile
Better than Radiohead What makes everything worthwhile I’m at The Zodiac in Oxford, UK, in 1992. As a music venue it’s currently half-way between the dive it once was and the soulless corporate hub it’ll become in a few years’ time. Most of the audience is here to see a local band called On a Friday, who’ve recently changed their name to Radiohead, and tonight, as part of their set, they’re recording a live video for their first single, ‘Creep’, which will go on to sell all around the world and, over the next few years, help to establish Radiohead as one the world’s most famous bands. But like several others in the audience, I’m not really here to see Radiohead. I’m here to see The Daisies who are supporting them, and The Daisies – we all sense - are about to come onstage…. After seven exhausting, angry years I resigned my teaching post in a school and taught in a prison for a year while making my first forays into youth work, co-writing and directing rock musicals in the town where I’d been teaching, thereby getting to work with my ex-students but no longer having to teach them capital letters and full-stops. At the end of that year, I started a proper job elsewhere as a half-time youth worker and half-time school counsellor. I was keen that the youth centre I found myself running should expand its creative repertoire beyond desultory discos, pool, darts and table tennis, and develop a culture that included music and drama and all sorts of other, more ambitious things.

  • 2021 Spring/Summer Series
Dear Patrons, Welcome back to live events at the Bologna Performing Arts Center! We are excited to have artists returning to our stage, and look forward to inviting you to attend shows again. Things will be a little different this spring and summer. Due to the ongoing nature of the pandemic, we are going to put each show on sale individually, about 4-6 weeks before each event. This allows us to make sure we are following the most recent executive orders, including audience capacity guidelines. Please refer to the on-sale dates for each artist in this brochure. Seating has been reduced for our Spring/Summer Series, and is being sold in staggered pairs and groups. We ask that you purchase all of the seats in the grouping to ensure that patrons are comfortable being seated together. At this time, all patrons are required to wear masks during their visit to the Bologna Performing Arts Center. All of our staff and volunteers will also wear masks, and do daily temperature checks and symptom monitoring. We ask you to please monitor your own health, and stay home if you do not feel well. We have also increased our cleaning and sanitation regimens. We have invested in new cleaning systems to ensure that the theater is totally sanitized prior to every performance. We encourage you to call us at 662-846-4625 or visit our website www.bolognapac.com for the latest health and safety operating guidelines prior to your visit. The offer was available for three months, after which the band released and commercialized the album, both digitally and in CD. In this paper, we use weekly music sales data in the US between 2004-2012 to examine the effect of Radiohead’s unorthodox strategy on the band’s al- bum sales. We find that Radiohead’s PYOP offer had no effect on the subsequent CD sales. Interestingly, it yielded higher digital album sales compared to a traditional release.

  • WATCHMOJO – the Life and Career of David Bowie (1947-2016)
WATCHMOJO – The life and career of David Bowie (1947-2016) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lan_wotkon0 [Fashion] Welcome to watchmojo.com and today we're taking a look at the life and career of David Bowie. [Queen Bitch] David Robert Jones was born on January 8 1947 in Brixton London England. Though he showed musical interest at a young age it was only in the early 60s that he really pursued the art. He started by joining several blues bands but branched off on his own when they had little success. Renaming himself David Bowie he released his self-titled debut in 1967. [Who's that hiding in the apple tree clinging to a branch] Its lack of success led Bowie to participate in a promotional film called Love you till Tuesday which showcased several of his songs. A particular interest was Space Oddity : that track became a hit after it was released at the same time as the first moon landing. [Ground control to Major Tom] His sophomore effort of the same name however was another commercial disappointment. [The man who sold the world] To promote his third album The man who sold the world, Bowie was put in a dress to capitalize on his androgynous look. [Life on mars] [Ziggy Stardust] In 1971 a pop influenced record called Hunky-Dory came out and was followed by the creation of his flamboyant Ziggy Stardust persona and stage show with backing band The Spiders from Mars. Then came his breakthrough record The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which climbed the charts thanks to his performance of the single Star Man on Top of the Pops.

  • 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit".

It looks at how this evolution altered both the aesthetic and gesture of the genre. This evolution can be seen by examining four bands that followed similar musical and commercial trajectories.
