12th & Delaware DIRECTORS: Rachel Grady, Heidi Ewing U.S.A., 2009, 90 min., color On an unassuming corner in Fort Pierce, Florida, it’s easy to miss the insidious war that’s raging. But on each side of 12th and Delaware, soldiers stand locked in a passionate battle. On one side of the street sits an abortion clinic. On the other, a pro-life outfit often mistaken for the clinic it seeks to shut down. Using skillful cinema-vérité observation that allows us to draw our own conclusions, Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing, the directors of Jesus Camp, expose the molten core of America’s most intractable conflict. As the pro-life volunteers paint a terrifying portrait of abortion to their clients, across the street, the staff members at the clinic fear for their doctors’ lives and fiercely protect the right of their clients to choose. On September 2nd, Fathers Day 1984, two motorcycle clubs – the Bandidos and the Comancheros – went to war at a public swap meet. After a brief but violent battle, seven people had been shot dead, including a young innocent bystander, and some forty other club members needed hospitalisation. Brothers in Arms is the story of how that day came to pass. In the 1970s, the outlaw bikie scene was in its fledgling days. More wild west than organized crime, the Comancheros vied with many other motorcycle gangs for territory. As the tribes fought, the Comancheros were also fighting their own internal battle, with the Supreme Commander, Jock Ross, recruiting men to his club with the purpose of being the one dominant motorcycle gang in Sydney and eventually Australia. Not everyone agreed with his tactics. When the men challenged him, Jock split the club in what was a betrayal of his most loyal acolyte, Anthony “Snoddy” Spencer. With this act, Jock Ross misjudged the feelings of his men. Instead of staying with him, the majority mutinied, sticking with Snoddy who formed the Bandidos. And the seeds for Milperra were sown. With powerful forces within each of the rival clubs demanding retribution, a series of tit-for-tat attacks led to war being declared.

  • The Multiplatform Brand Flows of Heroes
Selling Across the Spectrum: The Multiplatform Brand Flows of Heroes ERIN GIANNINI, independent scholar ABSTRACT This article examines how the NBC show Heroes and its use of product placement across multiple platforms represented an early response by networks and advertisers to concerns over ad-skipping and alternate viewing platforms by attempting to reconfigure how brand flow operates across multiple platforms. Not only did the series employ ‘second shift aesthetics’ (Caldwell 2003, 135), which represents networks bringing viewer-users back to the programme by ‘further engag[ing] and activat[ing] the text’ (Caldwell 2004, 50), but the products integrated within the text are pulled into the available world of Heroes’ alternative platform’s textual world, particularly Nissan branded cars. As Henry Jenkins writes: ‘Old media are not being displaced. Rather, their framework and structure shifted by the introduction of new technology’ (2006, 3-4). How these products are used within Heroes storylines and its interaction with characters and platform goes beyond simple placement to make the product another character within the show. Further, I examine the way in which Heroes, as a transmedia text, provided many points of entry for viewer-users to interact with it. While an analysis of fan activity is not the focus of this article, it is important to note these possibilities because of the ways in which the promotional apparatus of the network utilized these types of convergences for the series. Yet, in the case of Heroes, this was achieved by suturing new technological abilities of brand extension with an older model of ad- supported television (namely, the single-sponsorship model of early American television), both within the terrestrial television series and across multiple platforms.
