Trinity Baptist College Student Technology Guide 2010-11 4 Introduction Welcome

Welcome to Trinity Baptist College! In today's connected world, technology is a part of our every day life. There are many technology resources available for your convenience at Trinity. Technology services provides the ministry with computer software, hardware and telecommuni- cations support. We have written this guide to help you make the best use of the resources available here on campus.

This technology guide will provide you with information about using computer resources on campus as well as when you work from home. We include information for getting technical help, signing up for internet access, using dormitory telephone systems, accessing wireless services, using research tools in the library and printing documents.

If you don’t have your own computer or you’re on campus and want to check your e-mail, the library is equipped with computers for students to use to send and receive e-mail, type papers, print documents, and do research on the web.

All library computers will begin web exploration at the student intranet page. The student intranet may be accessed at http://Trinityweb from any computer on the campus network. The student intranet contains quick links for checking your Trinity E-mail account, searching the library catalog (Athena), a student directory, the student handbook and other helpful links.

One of the links you’ll find on the student intranet is to MyTBC. It is through MyTBC that you may view your class schedule, enroll in summer and fastrack classes and pay your bill online. You may also use MyTBC to update your billing and student information. You can visit the MyTBC web page off campus by going to http://register.tbc.edu. You may already be familiar with MyTBC from the registration process.

We hope that you enjoy your academic life at Trinity. Trinity has much to offer spiritually, aca- demically and technologically and you should take advantage of all available opportunities. Don’t hesitate to check with the help desk ([email protected]) for information on campus computing and technology issues.

Trinity Baptist College Student Technology Guide 2010-11 Internet Access Getting Started 9

Please keep your important documents on the network or in more than one location rather than solely on a flash drive. Flash drives are a good means of portable storage but are not reliable as a youronly storage medium. You may also make use of the document storage space available through your online students.tbc.edu email account. USB “flash drives” may be available for sale in various capacities in the college bookstore.

Internet Access: You may take advantage of our high speed connections to perform academic research or just for web surfing. All internet activity is monitored and reviewed by the Dean of Students on a semester basis or as needed. You will be held responsible for any activity that occurs on your account so protect your password closely.

Filtering - All filtering is performed by a third party software company called Websense. The ministry pays an annual fee for a subscription service that categorizes internet sites. The min- istry does not assign the categories to web sites. A team of researchers chooses the category based on a list of criteria.

Trinity Baptist College blocks the following categories: Adult, Advertisements, Chat, Criminal Skills, Gambling, Glamour & Intimate Apparel, Hacking, Hate Speech, Personals & Dating, Photo Searches, Remote Proxies, Sex Education, Violence and Web Based Email. Sites that have not been categorized may also be blocked.

Occasionally a site may be placed in a category that you or the ministry may not agree with. Websense maintains a web page that allows you to submit a request to recategorize a web site. The URL is http://www.websense.com/suggestachange/urls.php Please use this page to submit a change request if you are unable to reach a site. Do not send your requests to the help desk!

Trinity Baptist College blocks the web-based email category for security purposes. The ministry cannot protect against viruses or other material from email coming directly from other web based email services. You should inform all your regular correspondents of your new email address before coming to college. You will not be able access any outside email services on campus.

Other Protocols - Streaming Media, etc... Many special services such as streaming audio, Instant Messenger, File Sharing sites and gam- ing services use additional bandwidth or are security risks for viruses etc... For these reasons many of these services are blocked or are unavailable during business hours.

Streaming Media - Streaming Media uses large amounts of bandwidth and may slow the net- work if used in excess. Streaming Audio and certain other streaming services are only avail- able after 5:00 p.m. and before 7:00 a.m. Streaming Media is allowed but not supported.

Trinity Baptist College Student Technology Guide 2010-11 10 Getting Started Other Protocols

Trinity Baptist College Student Technology Guide 2010-11 22 Appendix Online Content

Internet Policy - Student-Posted Online Content

All students should be aware of the fact that they are responsible for any content posted online via social networking sites or related online formats. The following guidelines have been provided to serve as a reference for any interaction with these types of sites.

1. Trinity Baptist College is committed to the safety and personal well-being of our stu- dents and will not tolerate any form of social-bullying, harassment, or threat made online against other students, faculty, staff or any other member of the community of Trinity Ministries. (see also our Zero Tolerance Policy- Student Handbook p.32)

Suggestions for Posting Online:

1. You are responsible for anything connected to your online accounts. This includes Facebook, campus email, online forums/messaging boards and your network inter- net account. Do not share passwords to any of your accounts.

It should be understood that deleting inappropriate, misleading, hurtful or threatening information after the fact does not always mean the situation has been rectified.

4. If you would not be comfortable with your parents, pastor/youth pastor, professors or other respected leaders in your life viewing the content you are about to post online then do not post it.

Computer Connection Process

Step 1: Request Network Access: • Read the Computer and Internet Policy from the Student Handbook. A copy has been included for your convenience. • Fill out the attached “Network Access Request Form” online.

Step 2: Connect your system to the network: • Wired Access - Each room has one data jack, which is under the phone jack. The data jack is wider than a standard phone jack. You must have a 10BASE-T cable (included in the kit if you purchased one) which has wider connectors than a normal phone cord. A standard phone cord will not work. Plug one end of your cable into the Ethernet card or adapter on your computer; plug the other end into the data jack. Most Ethernet cards have a green light that will be illuminated while the computer is turned on and physically connected to an Ethernet network. (If there are multiple computers in a dorm room you may need to purchase an Ethernet hub or switch to be able to connect multiple computers to a single network outlet. This can be a shared cost.) • Wireless Access - To set up your laptop for public wireless access you will need an 802.11b compatible network card, Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher and your network username and password. The ministry has tested Orinoco and Linksys brand network cards. Other WIFI compliant wireless cards should also work but have not been tested. Configure your wireless SSID for “Trinity” or do a search for available networks and choose “Trinity.”

Step 3: Fill out the request form Request and agree to policies: • Connect to http://portal.tbc.org/signup.asp • Fill out the form and agree to the service agreement. • Your account will be granted access within 24 hours. You will be unable to complete the next step until your account is activated. You may call the helpdesk at x2515 to confirm activation.

Step 4: Authenticate to gain access Authenticate with the access :

There are Two steps to access the internet via the network.
