Chart 1A Header Childhood Obesity Resource Source: i Introduction Project Background This project was made possible through a grant from Covidien. The Obesity Society partnered with the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) to develop a resource that would provide the basis for a toolkit for Community Health Centers (CHCs) with information on childhood obesity treatment and prevention for providers, patients, families, and community stakeholders. This is the Beta version of the kit that will be used to evaluate its effectiveness in the community and in selected Community Health Centers. About Childhood Obesity In the past 30 years, the occurrence of overweight in children has doubled and it is now estimated that one in five children in the US is overweight. Increases in the prevalence of overweight are also being seen in younger children, including preschoolers. Prevalence of overweight is especially higher among certain populations such as Hispanic, African American and Native Americans where some studies indicate prevalence of >85th percentile of 35-40%. Also, while more children are becoming overweight, the heaviest children are getting even heavier. As a result, childhood overweight is regarded as the most common prevalent nutritional disorder of US children and adolescents, and one of the most common problems seen by pediatricians. About Community Health Centers The National Association of Community Health Centers was formed by and for community-based health center programs. NACHC programs and services are designed to assist health centers in navigating today’s complex and constantly changing health care environment.

By 2030, 42 % of all adults will be obese, costing an additional $550 billion in health care expenditures. 4 Obesity in Illinois • In 1995, Illinois’ obesity rate was 15.5%; today it has nearly doubled. • Nearly two-thirds (64%) of all Illinoisans are overweight or obese. • Illinois is one of the top ten states for obese/overweight adolescents (ages 10-17 years). • The obesity rate for African Americans is 41%, compared to 26.6% among Non-Hispanic Whites in Illinois. 5 Obesity is linked to early death and over thirty diseases including: -Type 2 Diabetes -Cancer -Cardiovascular Disease -Arthritis -Asthma -Poor Diet Quality -Hypertension -Sleep Apnea -Osteoporosis -Depression 6 Obesity is Expensive • Obesity costs the Illinois health care system $6.3 billion per year – including over $1 billion to Medicaid. • If nothing changes, experts predict the cost of obesity could increase to $14 billion or more a year by 2018; $27 billion by 2030. 7 • Obese people suffer more injuries and disabilities and have more non-productive work days, creating loss of productivity. • For the first time in American history, the current generation may have a shorter lifespan than their parents.
