It is part of the digestive system; it gets rid of body wastes. Buttocks – The medical word for a person’s “bottom” or “rear end.” Cervix – The opening of the uterus into the vagina. Circumcision – An operation to remove the foreskin from the penis. Cowper’s Glands – Glands on either side of the urethra that make a discharge which lines the urethra when a man gets an erection, making it less acid-like to protect the sperm. Clitoris – The part of the female genitals that’s full of nerves and becomes erect. It has a glans and a shaft like the penis, but only its glans is on the out side of the body, and it’s much smaller. Discharge – Liquid. Urine and semen are kinds of discharge, but the word is usually used to describe either the normal wetness of the vagina or the abnormal wetness that may come from an infection in the penis or vagina. Duct – Tube, the fallopian tubes may be called oviducts, because they are the path for an ovum. -

Egg Allergy: the Facts
Egg Allergy: The Facts Egg is a common cause of allergic reactions in infants and young children. It often begins in the child’s first year of life and in some cases lasts into the teenage years – or even into adulthood for a few people. Children who develop allergy to foods such as egg often have other allergic conditions. Eczema and food allergy often occur in early infancy and later on there may be hay-fever, asthma or both. This Factsheet aims to answer some of the questions which you and your family may have about living with egg allergy. Our aim is to provide information that will help you to understand and minimise risks. Even severe cases can be well managed with the right guidance. Many cases of egg allergy are mild, but more severe symptoms are a possibility for some people. If you believe you or your child is allergic to egg, the most important message is to visit your GP and ask for allergy tests and expert advice on management. Throughout this Factsheet you will see brief medical references given in brackets. If you wish to see the full references, please email us at [email protected]. Symptoms triggered by egg The symptoms of a food allergy, including egg allergy, may occur within seconds or minutes of contact with the culprit food. On occasions there may be a delay of more than an hour. Mild symptoms include nettle rash (otherwise known as hives or urticaria) or a tingling or itchy feeling in the mouth. More serious symptoms are uncommon but remain a possibility for some people, including children. -

PUB NUMBER (if applicable) COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT EGGS By Jacquie Jacob and Tony Pescatore Question: Since eggs contain cholesterol, should I avoid eating eggs? No. Eggs are an excellent source of easy to digest, high quality protein that can play an important role in the diet of most Americans. It is true that high blood cholesterol levels have been shown to aggravate heart problems, but research has also shown that the presence or absence of eggs in the diet of most Americans is not likely to in- crease blood cholesterol levels. Only a small minority of people cannot regulate blood cholesterol levels. These people need to avoid high-cholesterol foods. One large egg contains about 213 milligrams (mg) of cholesterol—all of which is found in the yolk. The American Medical Association (AMA) recommends that, as long as you are healthy, you should limit your dietary cholesterol intake to less than 300 mg a day. If you have cardiovascular disease, diabetes or high LDL (or "bad") cholesterol, you should limit your dietary cholesterol intake to less than 200 mg a day. Therefore, if you eat an egg on a given day, it's important to limit or avoid other sources of cholesterol for the rest of that day. If you like eggs but do not want the cholesterol it contains, use egg whites which do not contain cholesterol. You can also use cholesterol-free egg substitutes, which are made with egg whites. If you want to reduce cholesterol in a recipe that calls for eggs, use two egg whites or 1/4 cup cholesterol-free egg substitute in place of one whole egg. -

WAKE Department of Integrative Biology and Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, University of California,Berkeley, California 94720 ABSTRACT Oviductal retention of developing embryos, with provision for maternal nutrition after yolk is exhausted (viviparity) and maintenance through metamorphosis, has evolved indepen- dently in each of the three living orders of amphibians, the Anura (frogs and toads), the Urodela (salamanders and newts), and the Gymnophiona (caecilians). In anurans and urodeles obligate vivi- parity is very rare (less than 1%of species); a few additional species retain the developing young, but nutrition is yolk-dependent (ovoviviparity) and, at least in salamanders, the young may be born be- fore metamorphosis is complete. However, in caecilians probably the majority of the approximately 170 species are viviparous, and none are ovoviviparous. All of the amphibians that retain their young oviductally practice internal fertilization; the mechanism is cloaca1 apposition in frogs, spermato- phore reception in salamanders, and intromission in caecilians. Internal fertilization is a necessary but not sufficient exaptation (sensu Gould and Vrba: Paleobiology 8:4-15, ’82) for viviparity. The sala- manders and all but one of the frogs that are oviductal developers live at high altitudes and are subject to rigorous climatic variables; hence, it has been suggested that cold might be a “selection pressure” for the evolution of egg retention. However, one frog and all the live-bearing caecilians are tropical low to middle elevation inhabitants, so factors other than cold are implicated in the evolu- tion of live-bearing. -

Organisms with external fertilization are often sperm limited, and in echinoids, larger eggs have a higher probability of fertilization than smaller eggs. This difference is thought to be a result of the more frequent sperm- egg collisions experienced by larger targets. Here we report how two components of egg target size, the egg cell and jelly coat, contributed to fertilization success in a selection experiment. We used a cross-sectional analysis of correlated characters to estimate the selection gradients on egg and jelly-coat size in ®ve replicate male pairs of the sand dollar Dendraster excentricus. Results indicated that eggs with larger cells and jelly coats were preferentially fertilized under sperm limitation in the laboratory. The selection gradients were an average of 922% steeper for egg than for jelly- coat size. The standardized selection gradients for egg and jelly-coat size were similar. Our results suggest that fertilization selection can act on both egg-cell and jelly-coat size but that an increase in egg-cell volume is much more likely to increase fertilization success than an equal change in jelly-coat volume. The strengths of the selection gradients were inversely related to the correlation of egg traits across replicate egg clutches. This result suggests the importance of replication in studies of selection of correlated characters. -

Eggshell consists of shell membranes and the true shell that includes mammillary layer, palisade layer, and cuticle. Measurements of eggshell quality include eggshell weight, shell percentage, breaking strength, thickness, and density. Mainly eggshell thickness and strength are affected by the time of egg components passage through the shell gland (uterus), eggshell ultra-structure (deposition of major units), and micro-structure (crystals size and orientation). Shell quality is affected by several internal and external factors. Major factors determining the quality or structure of eggshell are oviposition time, age, genotype, and housing system. Eggshell quality can be improved through optimization of genotype, housing system, and mineral nutrition.
