Thanos is steadily achieving recognition to be one of the leading virtuosos of his generation. His rich musicianship and perfectionism have already credited him with the highest praise from audiences and critics. It is his intense musical intuition, flawless technique and personal style in his interpretations that easily captivate the audience. The famous Brazilian Grammy Award winner guitarist & composer Sergio Assad writes for Thanos: "...An incredible musician and guitarist!!!...”. Classical Guitar Magazine (Blair Jackson-Nov 2017) refers to him: “...a formidable guitarist!...”. American Record Guide (Kenneth Keaton-May 2012) mentioned: “Mitsalas’s playing is excellent…His technical command and sense of invention and expression are impressive!” Sharon Isbin (Head of the guitar department at The Juilliard School) said for him: “Thanos has a brilliant virtuoso technique and an excellent musicianship – truly an extraordinary talent! His playing is of the highest professional caliber…” Reviewer Glyn Pursglove from MusicWeb International Magazine wrote for Thanos’s solo Assad cd release: “Everywhere one senses a vitality of personal commitment and disciplined freedom in his interpretations. Thanos is an impressive soloist!...” Timothy Smith (Oct 2014) at minor7th mentions: “Mitsalas marries all of the elements of great classical guitar playing: enormous and evocative tonal range, world-class command of the instrument, and a unique and defining musical voice….Mitsalas' newest offering, entitled "Contemplation", is quite simply one of the finest recordings I've encountered in my decade of writing reviews.” Thanos started music lessons at The New Conservatory of Thessaloniki where he graduated with the highest honours in 1989 (16yo), supervised by the eminent guitar soloist and professor Costas Cotsiolis. He attended post-graduate studies in Hochschule fur Music Cologne/Aachen with professor Thomas Muller Pering (graduated in 1994 with the highest honors) and finally at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York with professor Sharon Isbin, where he was honored to get a full scholarship from the institute, evaluated as one of its most brilliant talents. During his graduate studies he also attended several master-classes with important masters like Leo Brouwer, Pepe Romero, David Russel , Roberto Aussel and others. He recorded a complete solo recital for the Greek National Radio Television Network at the age of 14, and made his debut as an orchestral soloist at the same age, as well. His international debut came two years later in Poland, where he achieved to be the youngest prize winner ever (16yo) at the Silesian Guitar Autumn Contest (2nd prize and special prize as the youngest finalist). At that time he performed Rodrigo’s Concerto de Aranjuez with such an exceptional brilliancy, that critics and specialists praised him as one of the leading world –class upcoming guitarists. The same step toward international recognition was followed again two years later in 1990, where he was again the youngest winner ever (18yo) at the Carrefour Mondial de la Guitare Competition in Martinique (France). Thanos won several other prizes and distinctions at important international contests like Stotsenberg (Parkening) International Guitar Competition (USA), Volos International Guitar Competition (Greece) and Sinaia International Guitar Competition (Romania) among others. He was also awarded the prize ‘musician of the year’(1988) from the New Conservatory of Thessaloniki and received “Dimitris Sgouros” scholarship during his studies. Also won the prestigious Greek Scholarship Foundation’s fellowship, as well as Robert Nelson’s Scholarship (USA) while attending his post-graduate studies. • Derivation of the Thematic Material and Intervallic Gestures from the Main Theme in Fantasia Carioca by Sérgio Assad
DERIVATION OF THE THEMATIC MATERIAL AND INTERVALLIC GESTURES FROM THE MAIN THEME IN FANTASIA CARIOCA BY SÉRGIO ASSAD Armin Abdihodžić, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2013 APPROVED: Thomas Johnson, Major Professor Paul Dworak, Committee Member Bernardo Illari, Committee Member John Holt, Chair of Instrumental Studies James C. Scott, Dean of the College of Music Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Abdihodžić, Armin. Derivation of the Thematic Material and Intervallic Gestures from the Main Theme in Fantasia Carioca by Sérgio Assad. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2013, 55 pp., 47 examples, bibliography, 14 titles. The quantity of classical guitar literature reached a new peak late in the twentieth century with many famous guitarists publishing their own works for solo classical guitar. This increase in the published guitar literature resulted in a decline of the relative analytical discussions of contemporary guitar works. Sérgio Assad is a perfect example of an active guitarist/composer whose works are frequently performed in guitar recitals and yet very little discussion has been provided attempting to gain a deeper understanding of his compositional language. The purpose of this study is to two-fold: first, to show that Fantasia Carioca (1994) is a very carefully organized work and includes an intricate network of thematic material developed through a spectrum of intervallic gestures, of which all derive from the main theme of the piece; second, to provide a deeper insight into the compositional language of Sérgio Assad through a demonstration of different compositional procedures to which the composer resorts.

THE 15TH ANNUAL MARLOW GUITAR INTERNATIONAL YOUTH GUITAR COMPETITION Hello and welcome! The MGI Youth Guitar Competition sponsored by Myrna Sislen celebrates its 15th anniversary and we return to an in-person format this year. The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on our emotions and taken far too many lives since the lockdown in the DC area postponed our 2020 competition originally scheduled for March 13-15. While we were thrilled to be able to hold the competition in a virtual format in April, it was more than to hear you all play live again. No, it will be better than great. The past year also saw staggering incidents of police brutality against black men and women and the rise of the #blacklivesmatter movement. And even more police violence against protesters ensued. These events led to many heartfelt discussions about race. Among these, for me, was a conversation with Kareem McCullough, the guitar director at Loudoun County High School. And that led to me asking him to compose this year’s set pieces. I am delighted that he accepted the invitation. We were also inspired to honor the American composer Justin Holland (1819- achieve wide-spread recognition as a guitarist. In addition to his musicianship, he was a devoted humanitarian. May his music and his biography inspire us all. The format of the MGI Competition was designed by our friend Berta Rojas, the foster learning and to prepare the winners for a bigger stage. Berta’s vision and the reality it has become are a tremendous gift to the guitar community, and my husband, Jim, and I have sponsored the grand prize in her honor.

  • With Elbio Barilari Broadcast Schedule — Spring 2017
FIESTA! with Elbio Barilari Broadcast Schedule — Spring 2017 PROGRAM #: FST 17-01 RELEASE: April 2, 2017 Spanish Music and Visual Arts Spanish composers seem to have a strong predilection for the visual arts. One would say this is not surprising in a country that gave us Diego Velázquez, Goya and Picasso among many other first rate artists. Enrique Granados composed his monumental “Goyescas” (after Francisco Goya) in 1911, as a piano suite and in 1915 used its movements as the skeleton for his opera of the same title. In this program we present a selection of the original piano suite recorded by Cuban pianist Jorge Luis Prats. Goya also receives a tribute from Cuban born Spanish composer Eduardo Morales-Caso. The title of the piece, “Volavérunt”, refers to a 1799 painting by Goya from the series “Los Caprichos.” The meaning of the word is unknown and it was also the focus of an award-winning novel by the Uruguayan writer Antonio Larreta. Catalonian composer Xavier Montsalvatge pays tribute, an ironic tribute it may be said, to Salvador Dalí. His “Folia daliniana” alludes at the same time to the ancient tradition of the 16th century tradition of the “folias” and to the flashy surrealist painter of the famous moustache. Finally, three more Catalonians, Joan Saura, Nuno Rebello and Xavier Maristany, provide a miniature based on the contemporary graphics of the cartoons. This piece is part of a series of improvisations they did during the 1990s.
