Cgsunynewsletter Volume 17 # 1 the Classical Guitar Society of Upstate New York
! CGSUNYNewsletter Volume 17 # 1 The Classical Guitar Society of Upstate New York www.cgsuny.org Phone: 607-865-8775 Address: P.O. Box 151 Unadilla, NY 13849 President’s Message Greetings one and all, I am very pleased to announce that it is now official that our featured soloist at this year’s (our 17th!) Fall Festival will be Gohar Vardanyan. Anyone interested in her, her playing, or her teaching can see several helpful lessonettes at the Strings By Mail website. I am very excited. I recently recalled a silly but actually helpful scene in a Hollywood movie. In Runaway Bride there is a scene where one of the Julia Roberts character’s jilted fiancés, a major Grateful Dead fan, upon finding out that her devotion to him (and to the Dead) was not what he thought, asked: “What would Jerry (Garcia) do?” The answer came back: “Play”. As we watch trouble of all kinds all around the world we should play- for ourselves and for others- and we should listen. Sharing music truly helps dispel the darkness. Paul Sweeny, CGSUNY President 2016 Headline Concert and Masterclass Review 2016 CGSUNY Fall Festival Concert and Masterclass with Celil Refik Kaya by Giancarlo Sidoli This year’s featured performer, Celil Refik Kaya presented a phenomenal concert. Beginning with brilliant performances of Mauro Giuliani’s Sonata Eroica op. 150, two well-arranged sets of keyboard transcriptions of J. S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Enrique Granados’ Valses Poeticos. The second half consisted of Celil’s own Sonatina, Rodrigo’s Toccata, the Eighteenth Caprichoso de Goya by Castelnuovo-Tedesco and ending with an amazing encore-a Turkish piece in which one could almost hear the oud and rebab’s instrumental influence! Celil, a student of 2014 featured performer Adam Holzman, is currently pursuing his DMA at the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin. -

Marco Polo – the Label of Discovery
Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Doubt was expressed by his contemporaries as to the truth of Marco Polo’s account of his years at the court of the Mongol Emperor of China. For some he was known as a man of a million lies, and one recent scholar has plausibly suggested that the account of his travels was a fiction inspired by a family dispute. There is, though, no doubt about the musical treasures daily uncovered by the Marco Polo record label. To paraphrase Marco Polo himself: All people who wish to know the varied music of men and the peculiarities of the various regions of the world, buy these recordings and listen with open ears. The original concept of the Marco Polo label was to bring to listeners unknown compositions by well-known composers. There was, at the same time, an ambition to bring the East to the West. Since then there have been many changes in public taste and in the availability of recorded music. Composers once little known are now easily available in recordings. Marco Polo, in consequence, has set out on further adventures of discovery and exploration. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again. In addition to pioneering recordings of the operas of Franz Schreker, Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound), Die Gezeichneten (The Marked Ones) and Die Flammen (The Flames), were three operas by Wagner’s son, Siegfried. Der Bärenhäuter (The Man in the Bear’s Skin), Banadietrich and Schwarzschwanenreich (The Kingdom of the Black Swan) explore a mysterious medieval world of German legend in a musical language more akin to that of his teacher Humperdinck than to that of his father. -
Toccata Classics TOCC0168 Notes
P GUSTAVO LEONE ON HIMSELF AND HIS MUSIC I am a porteño, a native of Buenos Aires, but since 1987 I have lived in Chicago, where I am a professor in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts of Loyola University Chicago. Before that, from 1994 to 2007, I was on the faculty at Columbia College, also in Chicago. I began my musical career as a classical guitarist in Argentina, studying with Luis Ainsestad, Adriana Ardizzone and Miguel Ángel Girollet. I attended the Guitar International Seminars at the University of Palestrina in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from 1976 to 1978, where I enjoyed Abel Carlevaro’s guitar-technique seminars as well as master-classes by eminent guitarists such as Sérgio Abreu and Eduardo Fernandez. In the USA I performed as a guitarist with Collegium Musicum, the Contemporary Chamber Players, San Luis Obispo Chamber Orchestra, Harper Symphony, Kaia String Quartet, and CUBE Ensemble. My composition studies began at the Catholic University of Argentina in Buenos Aires with Roberto Caamaño, Marta Lambertini and Gerardo Gandini, in whose composition workshops outside the university I advanced my technique. It was in 1987 that I moved to Chicago, to pursue graduate studies in composition at the University of Chicago, studying with Ralph Shapey, Shulamit Ran, John Eaton and Howard Sandroff. My music has been performed by ensembles such as the Wiener KammerOrchester, Grant Park Festival Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra of Michoacán, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Pro Musica, Concertante di Chicago, Chicago Sinfonietta, Rembrandt Chamber Players, Avalon String Quartet, Spektral Quartet, Contemporary Chamber Players, CUBE Ensemble and Sonic Inertia. -
MN Sinfonia Music in the Schools, 2021-2022 Folk Tunes
MN Sinfonia Music in the Schools, 2021-2022 1 Folk Tunes - Music from Around the World Dear Teachers: Following is the curriculum guide for Folk Tunes - Music from Around the World, the Sinfonia Music in the Schools’ program for 2021-2022. This curriculum focuses on “people’s music” – common and popular songs and melodies that have been used for hundreds of years by composers in symphonies, chamber music, concertos, and yes, in popular music to be sure! Music is not created in a vacuum, and certainly can and should be seen in the social contexts of when it was written. Normally, our Music in the Schools has academic focuses, and is structured using state academic standards with related activities. Unfortunately, we could not find state standards for elementary school grade levels for (international) social studies, so instead we focused on the standards and related activities for music. Lesson plans are included for music by Mozart, Mahler, Tchaikovsky and Ponce. As you teach the curriculum, please relate it to your other subjects - especially to historical and geographic contexts. Because of the disruptions caused by the coronavirus, this curriculum is being designed both for online and classroom instruction. Unfortunately, we do not know when the Sinfonia will be able to visit the schools and play live performances as we typically do. Therefore, this guide contains many video links, which may in part substitute for the Sinfonia’s normal live in-school performances. Remember that one of the pre-requisites for participating in MIS is for students to hear classical music daily in the classrooms. -
Derivation of the Thematic Material and Intervallic Gestures from the Main Theme in Fantasia Carioca by Sérgio Assad
DERIVATION OF THE THEMATIC MATERIAL AND INTERVALLIC GESTURES FROM THE MAIN THEME IN FANTASIA CARIOCA BY SÉRGIO ASSAD Armin Abdihodžić, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2013 APPROVED: Thomas Johnson, Major Professor Paul Dworak, Committee Member Bernardo Illari, Committee Member John Holt, Chair of Instrumental Studies James C. Scott, Dean of the College of Music Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Abdihodžić, Armin. Derivation of the Thematic Material and Intervallic Gestures from the Main Theme in Fantasia Carioca by Sérgio Assad. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2013, 55 pp., 47 examples, bibliography, 14 titles. The quantity of classical guitar literature reached a new peak late in the twentieth century with many famous guitarists publishing their own works for solo classical guitar. This increase in the published guitar literature resulted in a decline of the relative analytical discussions of contemporary guitar works. Sérgio Assad is a perfect example of an active guitarist/composer whose works are frequently performed in guitar recitals and yet very little discussion has been provided attempting to gain a deeper understanding of his compositional language. The purpose of this study is to two-fold: first, to show that Fantasia Carioca (1994) is a very carefully organized work and includes an intricate network of thematic material developed through a spectrum of intervallic gestures, of which all derive from the main theme of the piece; second, to provide a deeper insight into the compositional language of Sérgio Assad through a demonstration of different compositional procedures to which the composer resorts. -

THE 15TH ANNUAL MARLOW GUITAR INTERNATIONAL YOUTH GUITAR COMPETITION Hello and welcome! The MGI Youth Guitar Competition sponsored by Myrna Sislen celebrates its 15th anniversary and we return to an in-person format this year. The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on our emotions and taken far too many lives since the lockdown in the DC area postponed our 2020 competition originally scheduled for March 13-15. While we were thrilled to be able to hold the competition in a virtual format in April, it was more than to hear you all play live again. No, it will be better than great. The past year also saw staggering incidents of police brutality against black men and women and the rise of the #blacklivesmatter movement. And even more police violence against protesters ensued. These events led to many heartfelt discussions about race. Among these, for me, was a conversation with Kareem McCullough, the guitar director at Loudoun County High School. And that led to me asking him to compose this year’s set pieces. I am delighted that he accepted the invitation. We were also inspired to honor the American composer Justin Holland (1819- achieve wide-spread recognition as a guitarist. In addition to his musicianship, he was a devoted humanitarian. May his music and his biography inspire us all. The format of the MGI Competition was designed by our friend Berta Rojas, the foster learning and to prepare the winners for a bigger stage. Berta’s vision and the reality it has become are a tremendous gift to the guitar community, and my husband, Jim, and I have sponsored the grand prize in her honor. -
Pablo Garibay Program
Pablo Garibay in Concert November 9, 2019 Dos Temas Populares Cubanos Leo Brouwer Canción de Cuna (b. 1939) Ojos Brujos The Last Coffee Together Simone Iannarelli (b. 1970) Sonata III Manuel M. Ponce Allegro Moderato (1882-1948) Chanson Allegro non Troppo Intermission Dos Cadencias Eduardo Angulo (b. 1954) Sonata para Guitarra Antonio José Allegro Moderato (1902-1936) Minuetto Pavana Triste Final Program Notes Leo Brouwer: Dos Temas Populares Cubanos Cuban composer and guitarist Leo Brouwer (born 1939) cannot be overstated in his importance not only to guitar composition but across the board in regards to the modernist style. Growing up on an island, Brouwer threw himself into score study, isolating styles and synthesizing them into his own voice, while incorporating Cuban musical devices (most notably evocative dance-like rhythms). The first piece, Canción de Cuna, is a lullaby which invites the listener into a peaceful dream state. Opening with muted strings before a wistful melody emerges, Brouwer creatively engages the audience with washes of harmonies. Occasionally one is caught by striking dissonances, but this Song of the Cradle ends similarly to its beginning, with the return of pizzicato before closing. The second work, Ojos Brujos (which translates to Enchanting Eyes), illustrates more of the characteristic rhythmic interplay and rich harmonic language of Brouwer. One of the most enchanting features of this work is its phrasing, which pulls the audience along powerfully through a variety of cadences. Simone Iannarelli: The Last Coffee Together Composing for the guitar is a notoriously difficult undertaking, to the point that most guitar works which come to prominence are written by guitarists who have an intimate knowledge of the intricacies of the instrument. -
