Das Parlament setzte einen Ausschuss ein, der die Auswirkungen auf die Europäische Gemeinschaft prüfen sollte. Der Vorsitzende des Außenausschusses Elmar Brok (EVP, DE) ist als einziges ehemaliges Ausschussmitglied noch als EU-Abgeordneter tätig. Er bezeichnet die Wiedervereinigung als "informelle Form der EU-Erweiterung". Brok und weitere drei EU- Abgeordnete, die Beobachter der DDR waren, schildern Erinnerungen an diese Zeit. Der Präsident der Europäischen Kommission Jacques Delors bezeichnete in seiner Rede vor dem Europäischen Parlament im Januar 1990 die Deutsche Demokratische Republik als "Sonderfall". Er fügte hinzu, die DDR habe ihren Platz in der EG, falls sie dies wünsche. Nach seiner Rede begann die Europäische Gemeinschaft mit den Vorbereitungen für die deutsche Wiedervereinigung. Einen Monat später entschied das Europäische Parlament, einen Sonderausschuss für die Wiedervereinigung einzusetzen. Eine der Fragestellungen war, wie die Bürger der DDR im Europäischen Parlament repräsentiert werden könnten. Die Bedeutung des Ad-hoc-Ausschusses spiegelte sich in seiner Zusammensetzung wieder. Insgesamt bestand der Ausschuss aus 20 Abgeordneten, darunter Claude Cheysson, Fernando Morán Lopez und Leo Tindemans, drei ehemalige Außenminister, und die ehemalige Präsidentin des Europäischen Parlaments Simone Veil. Den Ausschussvorsitz führte der spanische Abgeordnete Gerardo Fernández Albor (EVP).     ”The future of rural areas in Europe” 9th July 2019, 6:00 p.m. Saxony Liaison Office Brussels Av. d'Auderghem 67 B-1040 Brussels Diversity, local ties, a sense of community, entrepreneurial spirit and attractive landscapes - these are the most important potentials that characterize rural areas in Saxony and other European regions. Big cities and rural areas both contribute to enabling a dynamic development. Especially with the increasing digitalization, work becomes more independent of location in many areas, and rural areas are increasingly being used as a location for businesses and as a center of life, also for employees in science-related and highly-technical occupations. Youth in rural areas, and young farmers, enhance rural vitality and pave the way for stronger value chains and rural prosperity. A rural development policy not only facilitates the set-up of young farmers and new entrants to farming, it actively supports young entrepreneurs across many sectors of the economy. The policy´s wider objective of strengthening the socio- economic fabric is also helping to make rural areas more attractive places to live © Dr. Hans-Joachim Gericke and work, especially for young people. However, discussions about the eligibility of rural areas and demographic problems repeatedly show that the potential of rural areas is not fully recognized or used appropriately. It is therefore a concern of this event to motivate decision-makers at European level to work more for rural areas. Comparable challenges and best practice examples from different European regions show that rural areas offer many opportunities for individual development, economic success, intact nature and prosperity.

    Her Excellency Mrs. Angela Merkel Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Bundeskanzleramt Willy-Brandt-Straße 1 10557 Berlin - Germany 9 December 2020 Joint MEP letter to Germany to suspend submarine export to Turkey Dear Chancellor, in the light of ongoing tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, as Greek and German Members of the European Parliament we call on the German government to immediately suspend the export of German submarines, its components and spare parts as well as all related maintenance activities. Our appeal follows the European Parliament’s resolution of 17 September 2020 on Arms export: implementation of Common Position 2008/944/CFSP (para 17) which: calls on the VP / HR, for as long as Turkey continues with its current illegal, unilateral actions in the Eastern Mediterranean that run counter to the sovereignty of any EU Member State (notably Greece and Cyprus) and international law, and does not engage in dialogue based on international law, to introduce an initiative in the Council for all EU Member States to halt arms export licensing to Turkey in accordance with the Common Position Turkey’s recent explorative activities for natural gas deposits has led to an escalation of a simmering dispute between Turkey and Greece over maritime rights in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. We are extremely concerned about Turkey’s threats of military action against EU Member States in the Eastern Mediterranean and fear that Turkey could employ submarines produced in Germany in this conflict. Therefore, we urge the German government to undertake urgent measures to suspend in relation to Turkey the export of submarines, its components and spare parts - largely produced by German Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems and assembled in Turkey – as well as related maintenance.
