BOOK REVIEW OF MOLES AND MEN by David Charters David C. Martin Wilderness of Mirrors Harper and Row, New York, 1980 "This book," the author advises his readers in the foreword, "begins and ends in mystery, with precious few solutions in between." It opens in the 1940's with America's "loss of innocence" — its idealistic and, of necessity, hasty entry into the clandestine battles of the cold war. The story closes, still unfinished, in the mid-1970s with the resignation of James Jesus Angleton, for two decades the CIA's enigmatic chief of counter-intelligence, and the death of William King Harvey, point man in the CIA's secret war against the Soviet Union. -
The Cinema of Oliver Stone
Interviews Stone on Stone Between 2010 and 2014 we interviewed Oliver Stone on a number of occasions, either personally or in correspondence by email. He was always ready to engage with us, quite literally. Stone thrives on the cut- and- thrust of debate about his films, about himself and per- ceptions of him that have adorned media outlets around the world throughout his career – and, of course, about the state of America. What follows are transcripts from some of those interviews, with- out redaction. Stone is always at his most fascinating when a ques- tion leads him down a line of theory or thinking that can expound on almost any topic to do with his films, or with the issues in the world at large. Here, that line of thinking appears on the page as he spoke, and gives credence to the notion of a filmmaker who, whether loved or loathed, admired or admonished, is always ready to fight his corner and battle for what he believes is a worthwhile, even noble, cause. Oliver Stone’s career has been defined by battle and the will to overcome criticism and or adversity. The following reflections demonstrate why he remains the most talked about, and combative, filmmaker of his generation. Interview with Oliver Stone, 19 January 2010 In relation to the Classification and Ratings Administration Interviewer: How do you see the issue of cinematic censorship? Oliver Stone: The ratings thing is very much a limited game. If you talk to Joan Graves, you’ll get the facts. The rules are the rules. -

The US War on Cuba: from Economic Embargoes, Biological Warfare to US-Backed Terrorism

Before the rise of Cuba’s Communist party, there was a US-backed fascist government under the leadership ofFulgencio Batista who ruled Cuba with an iron fist. Batista was elected in 1940 serving a 4-year term. Then Batista’s reign of terror effectively began when he decided to run for re-election in 1952, but when his political party found itself practically in last place during the election with Roberto Agramonte of the Orthodox Party who was in the lead followed by Carlos Hevia of the Authentic Party, he decided to lead a military coup and cancel the elections. The current president at the time, President Carlos Prio Socarras went into exile as a result. So what did Washington do? They immediately recognized Batista’s government and gave him financial and military support among other benefits. In the meantime, Batista suspended the 1940 Constitution that he originally supported and then made a radical move by cancelling whatever civil liberties the Cuban people had left. Batista had total control over the Cuban economy that was once on equal grounds with Italy in terms of economic growth. One of Batista’s first moves as a typical dictator in Latin America when he gave his full-support to wealthy landowners who owned basically almost all of the sugar plantations on the island. -

Other Persons of Interest
Other Persons of Interest Paulino Sierra Martinez Martinez was a lawyer employed in the legal counsel's office of the Union Tank Car Co. in Chicago. Before his immigration to the United States, worked in Ministry of Communications in Cuba. Carlos Saladrigas (a minister under Batista) had reportedly employed him, He had also worked with Santiago Alvarez Rodriguez, former senator during Batista's regime. Sierra left Havana in 1960 and settled for a time in Miami where he worked as a judo instructor and a translator. Arriving in Miami in May 1963, Sierra scheduled a series of meetings at a local hotel and invited Cuban exile leaders of all political persuasion to discuss unification for the purpose of military invasion of Cuba. Claimed the Chicago backers (casino owners) were willing to lend assistance to the extent of 30 M$... with or without the help of the U.S. gvt. It was widely rumored that the money was actually from "gambling interests" of organized crime. Preliminary research also indicated that the Secret Service in Chicago was investigating a "threat to the President" case at the time of President Kennedy's assassination, in which Paulino Sierra was of interest. Union Tank Car (Rockefeller company) had a greater role in the junta. Sierra was also holding discussions with several "action" groups for assistance in a military operation against Cuba. Among those contacted who reportedly signed "pledges" of support were Aldo Vera Serafin of the militant MAPA group (American Patriotic Action Movement); Eloy Gutierrez Menoyo and Antonio Veciana Blanch of the SNFE-Alpha 66 alliance; Santiago Alvarez Rodriguez of Comandos L; Eduardo Mor Ruiz, an independent anti-Castro Cuban fighter; and Orlando Bosch of MIRR. -

Eric Gans, the Hypothesis, and the Humanities Scholars in the human sciences (the arts, liberal thought, and the verstehen varieties of social sciences) are often called upon to supply new modes of thinking to meet the challenges of a post-Marxist, post-modern, even post-humanist world. A new cartography of methodological expectations and possibilities within the purview of these human sciences would now appear desirable. Never has the world of thought-about-thought been required to perform so much, and only rarely, regrettably, has it offered so little. -
Inside the CIA: on Company Business
Darrell G. Moen, Ph.D. Promoting Social Justice, Human Rights, and Peace Inside the CIA: On Company Business Transcript courtesy of John Bernhart Frank Church (United States Senator, 1957-81; Chairman of Select Committee on Intelligence Activities, 1975-76) : Have you brought with you some of those devices, which would have enabled the CIA to use this poison for killing people? William Colby (CIA, 1947-75; Director, 1973-75): We have indeed. The round thing at the top is obviously the sight. It works by electricity. There's a battery in the handle, and it fires a small dart. Frank Church (United States Senator, 1957-81; Chairman of Select Committee on Intelligence Activities, 1975-76) : And the dart itself, when it strikes the target, does the target know that he has been hit and he is about to die? William Colby (CIA, 1947-75; Director, 1973-75): A special one was developed which potentially would be able to enter the target without perception. Frank Church (United States Senator, 1957-81; Chairman of Select Committee on Intelligence Activities, 1975-76) : As a murder instrument, that is about as efficient as you can get. William Colby (CIA, 1947-75; Director, 1973-75): It is a weapon: a very serious weapon. Victor Marchetti (CIA, 1955-69; Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director): I first began working in intelligence while I was in the army in Germany during the Cold War years. Later, when I was a student at Penn State, I was recruited by the CIA. James Wilcott (CIA, 1957-66): The guy told me he was from DoD, Department of Defense. -
