  • Constraints on the Timescale of Animal Evolutionary History
Palaeontologia Electronica palaeo-electronica.org Constraints on the timescale of animal evolutionary history Michael J. Benton, Philip C.J. Donoghue, Robert J. Asher, Matt Friedman, Thomas J. Near, and Jakob Vinther ABSTRACT Dating the tree of life is a core endeavor in evolutionary biology. Rates of evolution are fundamental to nearly every evolutionary model and process. Rates need dates. There is much debate on the most appropriate and reasonable ways in which to date the tree of life, and recent work has highlighted some confusions and complexities that can be avoided. Whether phylogenetic trees are dated after they have been estab- lished, or as part of the process of tree finding, practitioners need to know which cali- brations to use. We emphasize the importance of identifying crown (not stem) fossils, levels of confidence in their attribution to the crown, current chronostratigraphic preci- sion, the primacy of the host geological formation and asymmetric confidence intervals. Here we present calibrations for 88 key nodes across the phylogeny of animals, rang- ing from the root of Metazoa to the last common ancestor of Homo sapiens. Close attention to detail is constantly required: for example, the classic bird-mammal date (base of crown Amniota) has often been given as 310-315 Ma; the 2014 international time scale indicates a minimum age of 318 Ma. • A Review of Neusibatrachus Wilferti, an Early Cretaceous Frog from the Montsec Range, Northeastern Spain
A review of Neusibatrachus wilferti, an Early Cretaceous frog from the Montsec Range, northeastern Spain ANA M. BÁEZ and BORJA SANCHIZ Báez, A.M. and Sanchiz, B. 2007. A review of Neusibatrachus wilferti, an Early Cretaceous frog from the Montsec Range, northeastern Spain. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 52 (3): 477–487. Neusibatrachus wilferti is an anuran from the late Berriasian–early Valanginian fossiliferous lacustrine limestones that are exposed in the eastern part of the Montsec Range, province of Lleida, Spain. It was originally described by Seiffert in 1972 and its phylogenetic position has since been discussed. Neusibatrachus has been considered an undeterminable fos− sil, an abnormal individual, or a primitive palaeobatrachid. Here we redescribe the only available specimen, and clarify features, such as absence of palatines, nine presacrals, and procoelous vertebral centra, that have been the subject of previ− ous debates. We consider the specimen to be a postmetamorphic individual and make developmental interpretations of some of its characters. In particular, we provide evidence of a living anuran (Rana iberica) that resembles Neusibatrachus in the development of intervertebral articulations. Neusibatrachus is considered a valid genus, which differs from other anurans, except for the pipoids, in the joint presence of an azygous frontoparietal and a parasphenoid lacking the subotic alae, although it differs from the pipoids in having nine presacral vertebrae. Morphological evidence indicates that Neusi− batrachus is related to Xenoanura, the pipoid branch in the living Amphibia Tree of Life based on molecular data. More− over, it might be a member of the pipoid clade proper, which presently includes the Pipidae, Rhinophrynidae, and several fossil taxa, including the Palaeobatrachidae, although the evidence is not conclusive.

  • ESTADO DE LAS INVESTIGACIONES SOBRE LOS VERTEBRADOS DEL JURASICO SUPERIOR Y CRETACICO INFERIOR DE GALVE (TERUEL)L J
Estudios Geol., 60: 179-202 (2004) ESTADO DE LAS INVESTIGACIONES SOBRE LOS VERTEBRADOS DEL JURASICO SUPERIOR y CRETACICO INFERIOR DE GALVE (TERUEL)l J. 1.

  • The Rediscovered Hula Painted Frog Is a Living Fossil
ARTICLE Received 30 Oct 2012 | Accepted 30 Apr 2013 | Published 4 Jun 2013 DOI: 10.1038/ncomms2959 The rediscovered Hula painted frog is a living fossil Rebecca Biton1, Eli Geffen2, Miguel Vences3, Orly Cohen2, Salvador Bailon4, Rivka Rabinovich1,5, Yoram Malka6, Talya Oron6, Renaud Boistel7, Vlad Brumfeld8 & Sarig Gafny9 Amphibian declines are seen as an indicator of the onset of a sixth mass extinction of life on earth. Because of a combination of factors such as habitat destruction, emerging pathogens and pollutants, over 156 amphibian species have not been seen for several decades, and 34 of these were listed as extinct by 2004. Here we report the rediscovery of the Hula painted frog, the first amphibian to have been declared extinct. We provide evidence that not only has this species survived undetected in its type locality for almost 60 years but also that it is a surviving member of an otherwise extinct genus of alytid frogs, Latonia, known only as fossils from Oligocene to Pleistocene in Europe. The survival of this living fossil is a striking example of resilience to severe habitat degradation during the past century by an amphibian. 1 National Natural History Collections, Institute of Archaeology, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem 91904, Israel. 2 Department of Zoology, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv 69978, Israel. 3 Division of Evolutionary Biology, Zoological Institute, Technical University of Braunschweig, 38106 Braunschweig, Germany. 4 De´partement Ecologie et Gestion de la Biodiversite´, Muse´um National d’Histoire Naturelle, UMR 7209–7194 du CNRS,55 rue Buffon, CP 55, Paris 75005, France. 5 Institute of Earth Sciences, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem 91904, Israel.

ISSN 2533- 4050 (print), ISSN 2533-4069 (on-line). Abstract: The holotype of the “archaeobatrachian” (i.e., non-neobatrachian) frog Eodiscoglossus santonjae VILLALTA, 1954 is redescribed herein, with focus on some features that have been misinterpreted. The specimen is articulated and poorly preserved as fragmentary bones and impressions, and is from the Early Barremian La Pedrera de Rúbies Lithographic Limestones Formation at Santa Maria de Meià, Lleida Province. Other specimens from the same fossil site and unit are also examined and their former allocation to the same species critically reconsidered, with the conclusion that more than one taxon might be represented in this sample. Previous viewpoints on the systematic placement of E. santonjae, usually considered a discoglossid, are assessed. How- ever, a full revision of the Jurassic and Cretaceous specimens ascribed to the genus is required in order to resolve its phylogenetic position.

Anderson favors the “polyphyly hypothesis” (PH), which considers the extant amphibians to be polyphyletic with respect to many Paleozoic limbed vertebrates and was most recently supported by the analysis of Anderson et al.

Recalibrating the transcriptomic timetree of jawed vertebrates 1 David Marjanović 2 Department of Evolutionary Morphology, Science Programme “Evolution and Geoprocesses”, 3 Museum für Naturkunde – Leibniz Institute for Evolutionary and Biodiversity Research, Berlin, 4 Germany 5 Correspondence: 6 David Marjanović 7 [email protected] 8 Keywords: timetree, calibration, divergence date, Gnathostomata, Vertebrata 9 Abstract 10 Molecular divergence dating has the potential to overcome the incompleteness of the fossil record in 11 inferring when cladogenetic events (splits, divergences) happened, but needs to be calibrated by the 12 fossil record. Ideally but unrealistically, this would require practitioners to be specialists in molecular 13 evolution, in the phylogeny and the fossil record of all sampled taxa, and in the chronostratigraphy of 14 the sites the fossils were found in. Paleontologists have therefore tried to help by publishing 15 compendia of recommended calibrations, and molecular biologists unfamiliar with the fossil record 16 have made heavy use of such works. Using a recent example of a large timetree inferred from 17 molecular data, I demonstrate that calibration dates cannot be taken from published compendia 18 without risking strong distortions to the results, because compendia become outdated faster than they 19 are published. The present work cannot serve as such a compendium either; in the slightly longer 20 term, it can only highlight known and overlooked problems.

The first studies were by Franz Nopcsa (1877–1933) who Received in revised form 12 January 2010 published between 1897 and 1929 a series of notes and papers on this fauna, including five monographs Accepted 22 January 2010 dedicated to the Haţeg dinosaurs. Nopcsa described 10 vertebrate taxa, including dinosaurs, crocodilians and Available online xxxx turtles, from the Haţeg Basin, out of which 6 are still valid. He recognized the primitiveness and the small size of most of the taxa from the Haţeg palaeofauna, characters that he related to the isolated island environment Keywords: Dinosaurs within which this fauna lived for a long time span. Vertebrates After Nopcsa, systematic research on the Haţeg fauna was interrupted for many decades, being resumed after Maastrichtian 1977 when D. Grigorescu, leading a small group of students in Geology started to explore the deposits Haţeg Basin outcropping along the Sibişel valley, near Sânpetru village, from where Nopcsa made most of his collection of History of Palaeontology fossil bones.
