Symbiosis brought important evolutionary novelties to life on Earth. Lichens, the symbiotic entities formed by fungi, photosynthetic organisms and bacteria, represent an example of a successful adaptation in surviving hostile environments. Yet many aspects of the lichen symbiosis remain unexplored. This thesis aims at bringing insights into lichen biology and the importance of symbiosis in adaptation. I am using as model system a successful colonizer of tundra and alpine environments, the worm lichens Thamnolia, which seem to only reproduce vegetatively through symbiotic propagules. When the genetic architecture of the mating locus of the symbiotic fungal partner was analyzed with genomic and transcriptomic data, a sexual self-incompatible life style was revealed. However, a screen of the mating types ratios across natural populations detected only one of the mating types, suggesting that Thamnolia has no potential for sexual reproduction because of lack of mating partners. -

Szafer Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków, Poland ABSTRACT Background. Rhizoplaca subdiscrepans (Nyl.) R. Sant., a saxicolous, placodioid lichen, is considered to have a worldwide distribution in warm-temperate to boreal-arctic areas in Asia, Europe and North America. However, recent studies have revealed that this species includes five unrecognized species-level lineages—‘subd A, B, C, D and E'. During research focused on the diversity of saxicolous lichens in mountainous areas of southern Poland, some interesting representatives of the genus Rhizoplaca were found. The main aim of our study was to determine the taxonomic status of the collected specimens by means of molecular tools and a comparative analysis of similar herbarium materials. Methods. Detailed morphological, anatomical and chemical examinations of reference material from Asia, Europe and North and South America focused primarily on a selected group of lecanoroid taxa with a placodioid thallus. In addition, 21 new generated sequences representing Lecanora pseudomellea, Protoparmeliopsis muralis, Rhizoplaca opiniconensis, R. subdiscrepans s. lat. and R. phaedrophthalma were selected for molecular study using the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS rDNA), together with 95 available GenBank sequences mainly from the genus Rhizoplaca. Polish specimens that clustered with members of a potential species-level Accepted 25 June 2020 lineage `subd E' of Rhizoplaca subdiscrepans complex were recovered. -

ABSTRACT. – The Tuckerman Lichen Workshop is an annual event where professional and amateur lichenologists convene to practice their skills in lichen identification while exploring the lichen diversity of an area in eastern North America. The 19th workshop in this series was held in the Augusta- Aiken area of Georgia and South Carolina from 11-15 March 2010. While we visited sites on both sides of the state line, this report presents checklists from three sites visited in South Carolina. Habitats visited represent the Piedmont and Southeastern Plains ecoregions and contain forested and rocky habitats, including granitic outcrops and bluffs, mesic and bluff forest, and sandhill oak-pine forest. We found a combined diversity of 255 taxa with 93, 125 and 148 taxa per site. Site lichen biotas were found to have low diversity similarities with Jaccard results each ≤ 0.25, and were found to differ in terms of habit (growth form) and substrate. Noteworthy finds include three recently described species: Caloplaca yuchiorum , Lepraria hodkinsoniana, and Ramboldia blochiana. Also newly reported for South Carolina are Graphis oxyclada and G. pinicola, both recently reported as new to North America. KEYWORDS. – Biodiversity, checklist, lichens, South Carolina, forest. -
Lichen Checklist for North Carolina, USA
Volume 22 (2) 51 Lichen Checklist for North Carolina, USA Gary B. Perlmutter1 Abstract -- A checklist of lichens from a thorough literature review of both printed and online resources covering North Carolina, USA is presented. This list contains over 600 taxa from the state. While preparing a report for an herbaria review I had conducted for lichens of the Piedmont of North Carolina, I found it necessary to compile a checklist for the state to verify reviewed taxa as already reported or as new. The only existing checklist for North Carolina is from a website from the University of Hamburg, Germany (www.biologie.uni- hamburg.de/checklists/), which I found to be inadequate for my review. Therefore, I conducted a more thorough review of the literature, including both printed and online sources, from early papers (e.g. Oosting and Anderson 1937) to the most recent online publications (e.g. USGS 2005). The resulting checklist includes 605 lichen taxa and is the most complete listing of lichens of North Carolina to date. A Preliminary Checklist of the Lichen Flora of Lehigh Gorge State Park

LENDEMER1 ABSTRACT. – Recent field work in the Lehigh Gorge, NE Pennsylvania, USA, revealed the presence of 100 lichen species. Of these, 22 have not previously been reported for the state of Pennsylvania and several represent undescribed taxa. INTRODUCTION It is generally understood that the lichen flora of Pennsylvania is one of the most understudied lichen floras in the northeastern United States. Though the lichens of the commonwealth have been under continuous study for over 200 years (Lendemer & Hewitt, 2002) most areas remain unstudied and poorly collected. Several years ago the author began intensive field work in the mid-Atlantic states (primarily NJ and PA) in an effort to better understand the diversity and distribution of lichenized fungi in the region. Such field work is invaluable because New Jersey and Pennsylvania represent one of the few areas that have been continuously under study by lichenologists prior to, during, and following the industrial revolution in eastern North America. Thus, voucher specimens collected 200 years ago can provide baseline data for comparison with later studies. In September, 2003 the author began field work in conjunction with the floristic studies of T. Block and A. Rhoads to better characterize the vegetation of the area currently defined as Lehigh Gorge State Park (hereafter abbreviated LGSP). LGSP presently includes ca. 4,548 acres of land bordering the Lehigh River mostly in Carbon County, PA (Anonymous, 2002). Geologically speaking, LGSP is of particular interest because the late Pleistocene glacial border divides the park into two distinct units, one that is glaciated and one that is not (Inners, 1998).
