NARRATIVE RESPONSE TO THE BRIEF Design Strategy

Instead of creating a collection of discrete iconic buildings dispersed on the landscape, we think that the facilities of the cultural precinct should be condensed as much as possible into one compact whole to promote interaction and cross-fertilization among different art forms. Maximum variety of arts are compressed to a minimum footprint, producing endless encounter and creative sparks, meanwhile leaving maximum space on site for future expansion.

We conceive the New Arts Museum as a fluid that infiltrates and fills the gaps between the existing structures on site, connecting and binding all buildings into an amalgamated whole. Public realms of different scales and characters are created by the careful interplay between the new and existing building masses.

Vibrant Public Realm: The Artscape, Mediascape and the Green Link The New Arts Museum

The roof of the New Arts Museum is designed as an Elevated Artscape overlooking Gold The main bulk of the New Arts Museum is elevated above ground to create a Coast’s skyline. An open amphitheatre seamlessly connects the Artscape with the botanic sheltered environment for the Mediascape and to give a strong visual impact. garden on ground, fusing art and nature into one. Community spaces and theatrette are suspended from the New Arts Museum to create an animated roofscape for the Mediscape below. The sheltered landscape area below the elevated Artscape becomes a Mediascape: a media rich environment and virtual hub, with public screening and projection of new The New Arts Museum connects and fuses the Living Arts Centre, the Cinemas and media and interactive arts, display of visitor orientation data, broadcasting of festival the Civic Chambers into one cohesive structure. Visitors can move freely and events, etc. Together, the elevated Artscape and the Mediascape will create a seamlessly from one building to another through the New Arts Museum, hence 3-dimensional public event space with an ever-changing, ever-evolving array of 24-hours triggering chance encounter and interaction in the process. outdoor events throughout the year. The Living Arts Centre The Green Bridge extends the Arts Walk from the Surfer’s Paradise to the Green Boulevard, which cuts through the cultural precinct to form a recreational axis connecting The reception foyer of the existing Art Centre will be re-orientated to face the Green Evandale Lake with Gold Coast Turf Club. Live Entertainment Venues, cinemas, F&B Boulevard and designed with a grand covered entrance plaza to give a strong sense outlets and retails are arranged along the Green Boulevard. Together with temporary of arrival.
