Remus Horse Sanctuary

Combat your Horse related Fears at Remus Horse Sanctuary

Ingatestone, - Remus Horse Sanctuary’s much-loved Pony Days for children will be returning in 2019, with the first one taking place during the Easter holidays on Wednesday 10 April. However, a unique Adults- only day has been introduced for 2019 which will be taking place on Sunday 26 May.

The gentle familiarisation offered during the Adult’s day will be perfect for those who have always felt slightly nervous and apprehensive around horses and would like someone to help them overcome their fears. Alternatively, it is perfect for those who have dreamed of owning their own horse or pony but feel they need guidance in the care and responsibility that comes with caring for these wonderful animals.

Children’s dates in previous years have fallen strictly within school holiday periods but, due to demand, further dates have been released for 2019 including many Sundays. Further children’s dates for the year include: Sunday 12 May, Wednesday 29 May, Sunday 9 June, Sunday 14 July, Wednesday 31 July, Wednesday 7 August, Sunday 11 August, Wednesday 21 August, Sunday 15 September and Wednesday 30 October.

Priced at just £45 per person (adults and children are priced the same) and taking place only on selected dates, the Children’s Pony Days are suitable for boys and girls aged 10 years and over and will take place from 11am until approximately 4pm. Remus Pony Days are a fun and educational day for a child - they will learn how to care for a pony and the responsibilities that come with it.

Each day, attendees will be ‘loaned’ a pony or horse, and taught to make up its feed, how to groom and turn it out into the field, shown how to clean out the animal’s stable and make a nice new bed for him or her to come back into later. There’ll also be lots of tips, information and fun throughout the day. Full supervision is provided throughout the day.

Places are limited to just six people per date and bookings can be made online via the website at www.remussanctuary.org or by contacting the Sanctuary on tel: 01277 356191. Those visiting the Sanctuary for the Pony Days will need to bring a packed lunch and refreshments for the day.

Events and fundraising play a vital part in raising much-needed funds to keep the Sanctuary open and Sue Burton, Founder, says, “We’re always delighted to welcome children and horse lovers to the Sanctuary for our Pony Days. The work we do here is vital and our Pony Days are both great fun and a great way of educating children on animal welfare.

“That said, we’re equally aware that many adults can find these magnificent creatures quite daunting and our Adult’s date is a great way to help overcome those fears or hesitancy and learn that actually they are very gentle and responsive creatures who love human interaction.”

FOCUS FocusSouth Woodham Focus 13 Nelmo & Co – Introducing you to Making Tax Digital

Making tax digital has been renamed on many occasions to Making Tax Difficult we believe this is not the case with the correct advice and guidance helping you through the transition period here at Nelmo & Co we believe in Making Tax Doable. HMRC guidelines state that Making Tax Digital is a key part of the government’s plans to make it easier for individuals and businesses to get their tax right and keep on top of their affairs. HMRC’s ambition is to become one of the most digitally advanced tax administrations in the world. Making Tax Digital is making fundamental changes to the way the tax system works – transforming tax administration so that it is: • more effective • more efficient • easier for taxpayers to get their tax right

VAT-registered businesses with a taxable turnover above the VAT threshold are required to use the Making Tax Digital service to keep records digitally and use software to submit their VAT returns from 1 April 2019. MTD for VAT for some 'more complex' businesses has been deferred until 1 October 2019. This deferral applies to trusts; not for profit organisations not set up as companies; VAT divisions; VAT groups; public sector entities such as government departments and NHS Trusts, which have to provide additional information on their VAT return; local authorities; public corporations; traders based overseas; those required to make payments on account; annual accounting scheme users.

Making Tax Digital for VAT timeline Date Activity April 2019 Making Tax Digital mandated for all customers (except those that have been deferred). October 2019 Making Tax Digital mandated for customers that have been deferred. The 6-month deferral applies to customers who fall into one of the following categories: trusts, ‘not for profit’ organisations that are not set up as a company, VAT divisions, VAT groups, those public sector entities required to provide additional information on their VAT return (Government departments, NHS Trusts), local authorities, public corporations, traders based overseas, those required to make payments on account and annual accounting scheme users.

How does this effect your business? Making Tax Digital (MTD) means you won’t be able to keep and submit manual records after April 2019. Instead, HMRC will only accept VAT returns sent using software that supports Making Tax Digital for VAT. The use of this technology is compulsory so it’s a good idea to start thinking about your accounting software soon – that way you can avoid any potential complications from upgrading or migrating your software mid financial year. The handful of aircraft losses on both sides of the conflict and the associated deaths of young pilots on that particular day were tragic but nothing remarkable in those grim days almost eighty years ago.

29th October 1940 was the day the Luftwaffe selected for a dive- bombing raid by Messerschmitt 109s on the strategically important North Weald airfield. The speed of the surprise attack ensured that the raid met with some success but then, pursued by Hurricanes, it became a race to the coast – during which four of the raiders were shot down. Of particular interest is that the Me109s’ escape route took them in the direction of the Blackwater estuary and the four downed aircraft fell near , Tillingham, the Blackwater estuary and Abberton. Chelmsford City Council has announced that its flagship leisure centre, the new Riverside, is due to open in early June following a major redevelopment. Beginning in 2017, the two-year project utterly transforms the former 1960s leisure centre into a modern complex with the capacity, accessibility and sustainability that the growing city needs. Councillor Julia Jeapes, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said, “I am delighted to announce that the hotly-anticipated new Riverside will open to the public in the week commencing 10 June. I recently visited the site with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and was extremely impressed with the scale and quality of the new building – the pool in particular is a wonderful space, with a high ceiling and natural light flooding the space where swimmers will soon be enjoying themselves.” The main construction works are now complete and the centre is now being fitted-out, with tiles and paint appearing on the walls. The much-loved sports hall and ice rink remain and have been revamped, while the dated pool building has been replaced with two new high-spec swimming pools, a splash zone, flume, huge gym, health and fitness studios, creche and party room, soft play, improved changing rooms and an open, airy café overlooking the river. Landscaping works will soon begin to improve the surrounding area at the same time as building the complex. New footpaths and cycleways will be improved with lighting and attractive planting, while cycle storage will be included to make travelling sustainably to Riverside easy. This will create an attractive, accessible link between Riverside and the rest of the city centre, including Bond Street. Once complete, the new leisure complex will serve the people of Chelmsford and beyond for at least the next 60 years. It has been designed to be fully accessible to users of all abilities and ages; and the Council is planning in plenty of sessions and classes that will enable everyone, whatever their needs and confidence level, to get active and try something new. In the run-up to the opening, Chelmsford City Council is marking 2019 as a big year for physical activity in the city with a special celebratory programme called Spring Into Action. Between March and June, sports clubs, charities and community organisations are holding open days, come-and-try sessions and challenges. With sessions across the city, South Woodham Ferrers and the surrounding villages, you can have a go at anything from bowls to martial arts, swimming to sailing, running to walking. Check it out at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/springintoaction. Councillor Jeapes added, “We can’t wait to open the new centre to local people. I would like to thank everyone, including members and clubs who use the centre regularly, for your patience and support during the course of the construction works – I am certain that you will be impressed when you step through the doors in June!” Further details of the Riverside opening event will be publicised in May. Keep an eye out! In the meantime, you can find more information about the centre at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/riverside.

Where is God?

The events of the last few weeks in New Zealand and Africa pose some difficult questions in terms of faith. If there is a God, and God is good – how come such bad things happen in the world to good people? This is a question that has troubled many a scholar for nearly two thousand years. No theory that I have read provides a satisfactory answer. There are no answers. What can you say about God to a Mother whose three-year-old son is shot whilst at prayer? What can you say about God to a Father who cannot find his wife and his children among the mud and rubble that was once his home? There are no answers. Yet those who suffer often turn to God, not for answers, but for comfort. For many it is their faith in God that sustains them through troubled times. So, for those who seek him, God is there. For many of those who walk through troubled times, ‘thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.’ (Psalm 23). I believe in God, but that doesn’t stop me asking the question: ‘How come such bad things happen to good people?’ I have no answers, but when I meet God face to face, it is the first question I will ask.

The squad was Alfie, Brad, Charlie, Hayden, Katie, Keith, Logan, Luca, Mikey, Noah, Olly and Reighley.

We were a bit sluggish at the start, scoring tries on our ball, but letting Canvey run though us on theirs. Then we stopped that. If Canvey scored, they had to work hard for every try. The Team started calling their line and "Ready, Ready, Up!!!". Logan and Brad leading the way, hungry to meet the Canvey ball carriers and take them down. This became infectious across the Team with everyone starting to assert themselves more in the tackle. We certainly did well in putting pressure on Canvey, resulting in a few turnovers, knock-ons and forward passes from the pressure we applied.

Our supporters were well behind the Team and this urged them on even more. Great performances all round. SOUTH wOOdHAM RUGby CLUb - UNdER 12S bOyS

I would like to pass on a huge thank you from the boys of the Under 12s South Woodham Ferrers Rugby Club for the kind donation you provided from Mr Gees Foundation.

The team had a difficult time getting started when the new season began last September. The team found themselves with only 6 players and with a requirement to field 12 boys on the pitch for a game, it looked as though the team may have to fold. However, the coach Warren Restall refused to let this happen and worked tirelessly canvassing the local schools and encouraging the boys to network for new players. This resulted in the team growing from strength to strength - now we can proudly field 15 players.

Your generous donation enabled us to give each of the boys a waterproof training top, which really helped to boost a low morale.

Thank you from the parents and all the players from South Woodham Ferrers Rugby Club Under 12s. FOCUS 26 FOCUS ON SPORT Focus

The Gala Day Committee would like to thank the many businesses, large and small, local and distant who supported the club through sponsorship. Ladies travelled from all parts of Essex and Suffolk to take part in the tournament, members of Jacks Centre and volunteers from the local community all joined in helping to make the day such a success.
