Please check with your nominee before submitting their name to make sure that they are willing and eligible. Each candidate for vestry and convention needs to get a bio to Rusty Ogden in the office. Matters of interest in the bio are where you were born, what service you attend, and what activities you have participated in since becoming a member of Epiphany. This information will be handed out to the parish in suitable places. Rusty will use your directory picture with the bio. Please have information to Rusty as soon as possible but no later than Sunday, September 22 to be featured in the October Epiphany Star. Vestry of the Parish

The Vestry is the body of the parish that manages the temporal affairs of the parish. Members are elected for a term of three years and are not eligible to serve again for one year.

The minimum standards of the Diocese of for membership on a Vestry in the Diocese of Alabama are defined as those who are lay communicants entitled to vote at the Annual Parish Meeting;

“Those entitled to vote shall be confirmed adult communicants in good standing as defined in the General Canons who are canonically resident in the Parish and physically present at the meeting and who are known to the Rector and Treasurer as regular contributors to the support of the parish program...” (Canon 8.3 Diocese of Alabama)

The Vestry of the Church of the Epiphany considers the duty of being on the Vestry to be an honor and a position of great responsibility.

We expect the following standards of ourselves and of those nominated for membership in this body:

Attend worship services regularly. Be an Adult (16 years of age or older) Confirmed Member of this parish whose membership is resident in the parish. Be known to the Rector and Treasurer as a regular contributor to the support of the parish program (this means that nominees have contributed financially in some regular and significant way to the parish program in the twelve months before their nomination to this vestry, that it was done in such a way that the contributions are known to our Treasurer). Make a yearly financial pledge of support to the parish, in the form of a signed pledge card, during the annual Stew- ardship Pledge Drive (see below). Be physically present at the Parish Meeting except when prevented beyond control or in cases of emergency.

Upon election, the members of the Vestry shall:

1. Be willing to assist the rector in the nurture and extension of Christ’s Church. 2. Take care of the buildings, furnishings, records, and temporal matters of the parish. 3. Maintain order and decorum. 4. Be visible and accessible. 5. Attend church regularly. 6. Be active at parish functions, specifically in setting up and cleaning up. 7. Participate in parish ministries. 8. Support the parish program financially. 9. Be active in the Annual Stewardship Campaign and lead by example in Stewardship. 10. Be committed to personal Christian Growth. 11. Attend all Vestry functions. 12. Attend the Annual Vestry Retreat.

We commend these standards to those contemplating standing for election to this Vestry, and to the Annual Parish Meeting as it considers those who shall be elected to replace us as our terms expire.

We further commit ourselves to fulfilling these standards and urge the same on our successors.

Sincerely, Members of the Vestry August 18, 2015 Epiphany Star Page 6

Healthy Thoughts: Mental Health and Mental Disorders

Provided by ERH Parish Health Ministry …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ”For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Mental health is essential to personal wellbeing, family and interpersonal relationships, and the ability to contribute to community or society, yet an estimated 13 million American adults (approximately 1 in 17) have a seriously debilitating mental illness.

What is Mental Illness?

Mental disorders are among the most common causes of disability. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, “mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to oth- ers and daily functioning.” Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.

Types of mental illness include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and borderline personality disorder.

Treatment for Mental Illness:

Mental illnesses are both manageable and treatable. In fact, most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms by actively participating in an individual treatment plan. Treatments include medication, psychosocial treatment (such as cognitive behavioral therapy), interpersonal therapy, and peer support groups.

Important Facts: Mental illnesses are serious medical illnesses. They can affect persons of any race, religion, educational background, or income, and are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing. They cannot be overcome through “will power” or “tough love”.

Mental illness usually affects individuals in the prime of their lives, often during adolescence and young adulthood. All ages are susceptible, but the young and the old are especially vulnerable.

Early identification and treatment is of vital importance; by ensuring access to the treatment and recovery supports that are proven effective, recovery is accelerated and the further harm related to the course of illness is minimized. Resource: National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. It is an excellent resource that offers information, referrals, classes and support groups for people suffering from mental illness and their loved ones. For more information, visit www.nami.org
