Pérez Jr.) “Cuba’s Anglo-American Colony in Times of Revolution, 1952-1961” explores how, in the context of revolution, contact between Cubans and U.S. nationals--as well as a smaller number of British and Canadian residents--reproduced existing hierarchies, while simultaneously creating new empathies. Cuba’s Anglo-American residents managed informal empire by developing and cultivating economic, political and cultural authority on the island. These privileged outsiders were able to exert dominance through socio-economic partnerships with Cuban powerbrokers. However, Anglo-American educators, journalists, missionaries, politicians, executives, mobsters and philanthropists crafted a diverse, and often contradictory set of alliances with Cubans. Through archival research and oral histories conducted with former residents of the self-titled Anglo-American colony, this dissertation argues that proximity to Cuban suffering, most powerfully experienced by U.S. educators and missionaries, forged conditions that challenged existing class-and-nationality-based structures on the island. In the context of revolution, where their Cuban colleagues, classmates, students, parishioners, friends and family risked their lives and their privilege for a “new” Cuba, a significant segment of Anglo-American residents entered into cross-cultural solidarities with revolutionary actors. Based on the personal commitments they developed with Cubans, many U.S., British and Canadian nationals residing in Cuba struggled for a socio-economic and political transformation of Cuban society, both before the revolution ousted the Batista government and after the revolutionary government had consolidated power. The influence, presence, and actions of iii Anglo-American residents profoundly impacted the direction of events in Cuba and the United States. This research centers a new set of actors, institutions, and relationships in the narrative of the Cuban Revolution. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Without the support of countless people willing to invest time in this project and my personal and professional development during this journey through graduate school, my dissertation would never have been completed. Seventy-seven oral histories were collected for this project, yet that number would have been fewer than twenty if not for the incredible contributions of Carroll English and Chris Baker. Carroll English opened up a network of former missionaries in Cuba and Cuban Protestants that added texture to this dissertation through their oral testimonies, as well as their contributions of letters, diaries, memoirs and photos. Chris Baker, the son of Ruston Academy headmaster James Baker, introduced me to a diverse and significant set of Cubans and Anglo-Americans who resided in Havana in the 1950s who painted portraits of life on an island undergoing revolutionary change. Both Carroll English and Chris Baker have contributed enormously to the rich narratives featured in this dissertation. My invaluable research assistants Caleb Finesurrey and Nina Alvarado-Silverman added a depth of original evidence drawn from archival material. Lauren Brown became a partner in this project, transcribing scores of oral histories. Sarah MacCarthy’s transcriptions of the Spanish language interviews I conducted for this project also proved extremely helpful. It is located 150 kilometres south of the tip of the US state of Florida and east of the Yucatán Peninsula. On the east, Cuba is separated by the Windward Passage from Hispaniola, the island shared by Haiti and Dominican Republic. The total land area is 114,524 sq km, which includes the Isla de la Juventud (formerly called Isle of Pines) and other small adjacent islands. Peoples Main languages: Spanish Main religions: Christianity (Roman Catholic, Protestant), syncretic African religions The majority of the population of Cuba is 51% mulatto (mixed white and black), 37% white, 11% black and 1% Chinese (CIA, 2001). However, according to the Official 2002 Cuba Census, 65% of the population is white, 10% black and 25% mulatto. Although there are no distinct indigenous communities still in existence, some mixed but recognizably indigenous Ciboney-Taino-Arawak-descended populations are still considered to have survived in parts of rural Cuba. Furthermore the indigenous element is still in evidence, interwoven as part of the overall population's cultural and genetic heritage. There is no expatriate immigrant population. More than 75 per cent of the population is classified as urban. The revolutionary government, installed in 1959, has generally destroyed the rigid social stratification inherited from Spanish colonial rule. During Spanish colonial rule (and later under US influence) Cuba was a major sugar-producing territory.

    4 Originality and Relevance of the Cuban Revolution The predominant tendency in European intellectual and political circles is to regard the Cuban regime as a kind of fossil, a Stalinist hangover, and even in more traditional leftist circles which see Cuba as an example of social justice and resistance to globalisation, virtually no-one suggests that other countries could learn from the Cuban experience in political terms. The Cuban experience is identifi ed with armed struggle, and since the neutralisation of the Central American guerrilla movements armed revolution has been discredited. Although strong insurgent movements still exist in Colombia – the FARC, ELN and others – their strategy is to combine armed struggle with other methods and to seek a negotiated political solution; their great achievement (which should not be overlooked despite government and media demonisation of them as ‘narco-terrorists’) has been to maintain popular armed resistance to neo-liberalism. Within the last decade other movements which defend the resort to arms have appeared, notably the Zapatistas in Mexico, but given their limited military capacity and their strategy of ‘dissolution’ rather than seizure of power, it would be more accurate to describe them as representing ‘armed contestation’ as opposed to revolutionary armed struggle in the classic sense. Small organisations which advocate armed struggle in theory exist in many countries, and it would be rash to suggest that the question of armed revolution will never again be on the agenda in Latin America; but at present it is clear that political confl icts are resolved through a combination of elections and mass mobilisations which are predominantly peaceful.

By incorporating musical numbers into its narrative, the musical mirrors the entertainment industry mise en abyme, and establishes an intrinsic link to America through the act of (cultural) performance. Drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of the chronotope and its recent application to the genre of the musical, I read the implicitly spatial backstage/stage duality overlaying narrative and number—the musical’s dual registers—as a means of challenging representations of Americanness, nationhood, and belonging. The incongruities arising from the segmentation into dual registers, realms complying with their own rules, destabilize the narrative structure of the musical and, as such, put the semantic differences between narrative and number into critical focus. A close reading of the 1972 film Cabaret, whose narrative is set in 1931 Berlin, shows that the cosmopolitanism of the American film musical lies in this juxtaposition of non-American and American (at least connotatively) spaces and the self-reflexive interweaving of their associated registers and narrative levels. If metalepsis designates the transgression of (onto)logically separate syntactic units of film, then it also symbolically constitutes a transgression and rejection of national boundaries. In the case of Cabaret, such incongruities and transgressions eventually undermine the notion of a stable American identity, exposing the American Dream as an illusion produced by the inherent heteronormativity of the entertainment industry.
